Are you thinking of adopting a Shetland sheepdog? In this video by an animal expert, we explain everything you need to know about this breed of dog. Discover its origins, characteristics, training and much more. Although its exact origin is uncertain, the Sheldon sheepdog was first recognized on the islands that bear its name, which belonged to Scotland. Although the breed was officially recognized in 1908, documents have been found that place it around 1800. The sheltie arose from the crossing of several types of Shetland sheepdogs, so we can say that the current Sheltie and the Sheldon sheepdog have ancestors in common. The Sheltie was used to guide and protect dwarf sheep, ponies and even chickens. Discover what types of Sheldon sheepdogs exist in the video that we have left for you above. Regarding its characteristics, Its body is slightly longer than it is tall. Although well proportioned, it has a deep chest and strong muscular legs. Its head is very similar to that of a scale model Sheldog. It is refined and elegant. Its nose is black and the muzzle is rounded. The slanting eyes are medium sized, almond shaped and dark brown in color. The exception is the blue Merle specimens in which one or both eyes may be blue or blue flecked. Its ears are small, slightly long and wide at the base. The Sheldon sheepdog has an abundant double layered coat with the outer coat being long, harsh and smooth and the undercoat soft, short and dense. Accepted colors are sable, tricolor, blue Merle and the combinations of black, white and black tan. The ideal height at the withers for males is 37 cm, while for females it is 36 cm. They usually weigh around 8 kilogram. Shelties are good natured, loyal, intelligent and very affectionate dogs with their human family. However, they tend to be rather shy with strangers and have strong herding instincts that can cause some conflicts if they have not received adequate training. For this reason it is essential to socialize them from the time they are puppies. In the video on the card, we will explain how to introduce two dogs to each other so that they can become friends if we delve into their care. Their coat has to be brushed and combed once or twice a week. Despite being long haired, their coat does not get tangled as easily as it may seem. Although they are small dogs, Shelties are herding dogs that need a good dose of physical and mental exercise. A good daily walk and a play session can help, but they can also practice dog sports. On the other hand, mental exercises are essential to stimulate their minds and prevent possible stress or anxiety due to boredom. These dogs can live in an apartment as long as they receive the necessary exercise. It should also be noted that they tolerate temperate to cold climates well, but it is not a good idea for them to live isolated in the garden as they need the company of their families. Regarding education, Shelties are very intelligent and therefore learn easily and quickly. Remember to always use positive training. Common behavioral problems include two behaviors caused by strong herding instincts. On the one hand, they tend to be very barking dogs. On the other hand, they try to herd any individual who moves by biting their ankles. These behaviors can be channeled into activities that do not bother them or non harmful play. The Shetland sheepdog is predisposed to a certain number of hereditary diseases. These include dermatomyositis, cholido anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hemophilia, patellar luxation, deafness, epilepsy and hip dysplasia. To prevent the development or detect any of these conditions in time, it is essential to visit a veterinarian regularly as well as administer the pertinent vaccines and deworming sessions.
