In addition to body language, cats use their eyes to communicate with us, other cats and animals of different species. For many, a feline's gaze is one of the most mysterious due to the characteristic shape of its pupils. But what happens when they are completely round? In general, cat pupils tend to resemble a vertical line, not a circle. So why are they sometimes dilated? In this video by an animal expert, we will talk about it and explain why a cat's pupils may have dilated pupils. What are Cat Eyes Like? Over the years, domestic cats have evolved and adapted some of their natural habits, such as hunting. The ancestors of today's cats were nocturnal animals that took advantage of the darkness of the night to feed themselves and at the same time protect themselves from possible predators. This was possible thanks to the anatomy of their eyes, which gives these animals excellent night vision. To do this, cats dilate their pupils as much as possible to allow more light to enter. In addition, the eyes of this animal contain tissue called the tapetum lucidum. This tissue allows the cat to absorb and retain light before it reaches the retina. This is why it is possible to see in the dark. During the day, the cat's pupil contracts and keeps it more or less closed, depending on the amount of light. In general, the pupils of cats come in three different vertical, elliptical and round. If there is a lot of light in a space, the cat's pupil will be vertical because it does not need as much light to enter. On the other hand, if the space is dark, the cat's pupil will be dilated to capture all the light it can, whether or not there is light. Entering is not the only reason that leads the cat to contract or dilate its pupils, since on many occasions it does so as a reflex action that shows its mood or health. In general, the round shape of the pupils is not normal, so when they are dilated, it means that the cat is not relaxed. Focusing on those causes related to emotions and feelings. Round pupils in cats express unexcited When a cat is very excited or nervous, such as during a play session, it is normal for them to have round or elliptical pupils. This same excitement can also occur due to stress or anxiety. 2. Sexual satisfaction in situations that make them happy, cats tend to dilate their pupils as a reflex action. An example of this is when we give them food. 3. Fear if a cat's pupils are dilated and their eyes are wide open, they may be feeling fear or dread of something. This can be due to a loud noise, a situation, or a change. 4. Aggression Cats dilate their pupils when they stare at their prey and are preparing to attack. If you observe yours in a similar attitude, it is possible that they feel threatened by something. Dilated Pupils as a Symptom There are certain pathologies and conditions that show dilated pupils in their symptoms. If the light in the environment is normal, there is no there are no stressors or stimulants, but even so, the cat's pupils are very dilated. It is time to see a veterinarian. Possible health causes that can cause this dilation are glaucoma, uveitis, kidney failure, hypoglycemia, feline leukemia virus, some types of cancer poisoning, head trauma, eye discomfort or injuries, and anisocoria. Of course, all these problems have other symptoms that we must identify in order to discuss them with the veterinarian. As a note, it is important to emphasize that anisocoria occurs when the cat has one pupil much more dilated than the other. It is a symptom that can develop as a result of other diseases. Although we have mentioned that it is not usual for a cat to have dilated pupils, this dilation is not always a cause for alarm. In most cases, this dilation will be related to the entry of light for better vision. However, it is always advisable to know our cat well in order to be able to identify whether the dilation is due to an emotional or health problem.
