Hi, I'm Sylvia Meofre, a canine ethologist, and for years I've been accompanying and advising families who live with a dog using a kind and respectful approach. Today we're going to talk about why your dog may cry at night. There could be many causes, but I'm going to explain the five most common reasons. The first reason could be frustration. Dogs are social animals and therefore need and like to belong to a group. Since they're social, they also like to share activities. One of them is resting and sleeping. Normally, our dog seeks contact when they want to go to rest because they feel safer. So when we go to sleep, they often climb onto our bed, which is why they sometimes whimper. They intend to climb up, but can't. That would be one of the reasons. What can we do, if you don't mind if the dog climbs up on the bed? Quick solution. The dog can sleep with you. And it also benefits us. We know that oxytocin levels increase for both them and us, and that this also has an anxiolytic effect. But if this is your case, it is not possible to get the bed up. We must put a comfortable bed next to us, next to our bed, and take it there in a loving, friendly way. Tell it to lie down there, pet it, and it has to be a bed that it likes. In general, dogs like to sleep in elevated areas. So a slightly thick bed, if possible, with a viscoelastic mattress that has edges, because they also like to rest their head on the sides and that fits sideways. That is when the dog lies down sideways, which is when it enters the different stages of sleep and is where it relaxes the most. Its whole body can fit so that it is comfortable. And then we will gradually reinforce that it stays in that bed. And if your intention is for it to sleep a little further away from the bed, we can progressively move the bed further away. Another reason may be the arrival of a puppy. Puppies come from being with their siblings and mother, and therefore we have just separated them from their entire social group and they can be disoriented and lonely. Then night comes and we want them to sleep alone in their bed when they have been sleeping all over the place for a few months, right with the rest of their family. Therefore, they feel insecure and probably ask us to sleep with us there. We have two One, let them go upstairs to sleep with us, but this will be something we will leave for the rest of their lives, because we cannot say one day yes, one day no, or if you do not want them to Sleep with you. We can also put a bed for them as close as possible to us and make it a soft bed, right? One of those beds that are furry so the dog feels protected. Another factor that can also make a dog cry at night can be a dog that we have recently adopted. An adopted dog is a stressed dog because they come from an environment that experiences a lot of stress and have also undergone a change in both group and context. Then he needs time to adapt. There we have to observe him, especially to see where he feels most comfortable. Offer him that place, okay? Accompany him and if he likes petting, try to relax him at that time. Avoid him doing activities before night that could excite him, such as going for a run with him or throwing things at him. And we can promote relaxing activities, such as chewing or giving him something to love. Don't be in a hurry to do many activities with the dog because he has to adapt. Don't be in a hurry to go to a park. Let him meet other dogs, have visitors come to the house so they can get to know him little by little. He needs his time. Another cause could be fear or anxiety. If one day at night, there was a storm, fire, that time of day, with that experience, and then the dog anticipates it and gets nervous, and one of the symptoms he can show is that whining there. I would tell you to go to a professional, to be able to go into more depth and give you some guidelines to apply in a personalized way. But what we should do is give him support. Ignoring a dog that is nervous, scared and anxious can increase the problem. And as we are his safe base, we should support him. Then we should be present by his side and perhaps take him to another space in the house where he might seem calm.
