The content features Carlos, a veterinarian, who explains why cats are often fearful, discussing their survival instincts, common fears such as loud noises and mirrors, and the impact of socialization and environment on their behavior. The video also warns against intentionally scaring cats as it can cause anxiety and health issues.
Foreign hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. It's the scariest time of the year. Halloween, or the Day of the Dead is approaching, and cats are the stars of this holiday season. Some time ago, we told you on the channel why black cats are associated with Halloween. And if you want to know more about this very interesting story, I'll leave the link below in the box. We all have the idea in our heads that cats get scared very easily, or that they can even be a little distrustful. But why are cats so scared? Leave me a comment and tell me if your feline companion has ever been scared of something everyday in your home, something that isn't scary to you at all, but is terrifying to them. The main reason why our cats act afraid when faced with, for example, a very loud noise or the first time they see their reflection in a mirror, is due to their survival instinct. This instinct, of course, is not exclusive to cats, but it helps our feline companions to immediately assess the best option when faced with a situation that overwhelms them and decide how to act based on that. And as I said, cats will always choose the latter option when it comes to confronting the problem or getting out of the way. But of course, when our cats run away, they are sometimes a bit comical, which is why the Internet is full of videos of cats overreacting to everything. This reaction is completely normal and has helped our cats evolve and survive in the world over time. Cats in nature do not form large social groups. They are generally solitary, especially males, so they have to fend for themselves in order to survive. When they see that something could cause them some kind of harm, and when in doubt it could be anything, they will look for a place to hide. And all this that I am telling you is part of the normal natural temperament of cats. But then each cat may be afraid of specific things. For example, a cat that lived with me named Kopito was very afraid of basketballs. This happened because one day my brother and I were playing basketball and the ball suddenly bounced and accidentally hit him. Since then, he hasn't gone near any of them. Therefore, the experiences your cat has had will make him afraid of some things and not others. Apart from this socialization also has a lot to do with it. Cats that have lived with several people or several cats when they were little are less likely to be afraid of them when they are older. That's why it's very important that when we rescue, for example, a street cat that is already an adult and is a little reserved, a little fearful. We always give it its space and give it positive reinforcement, for example, with food, so that it understands that we do not pose any kind of danger to it, no type of risk, and that its survival instinct, so to speak, is deactivated because it has finally understood that people are not a danger to it. But let me tell you more. The cat like nature of your feline companion will also influence whether it is more or less fearful. Cats that are hunters or grumpy tend to be more fearful because they have less contact with people, fewer interactions, and therefore anything we do around them is more likely to surprise them. If you don't know what this whole cat like nature thing is all about, we've explained it to you in a video on the channel that I've linked below. Take a look and see what kind of cat personality your feline companion has. But in any case, there are a top few things that scare almost all cats at home. The most important ones are loud noises, bangs. It is not uncommon to see a cat running out of the kitchen because a glass falls from our hand, because suddenly it gets scared and leaves too. This also applies to when someone yells at it. That makes the cat start to distrust that person and be afraid of them. That is why you should never scold your feline companion. Another great classic is mirrors. Many cats get scared the first time they see their reflection because they suddenly find a cat that has not been invited into their home and they think it has come to take their food or terr. For this reason, many react with fear. Some stay, others even fight. And many of them also approach and start sniffing it because they want to know what the pheromones of the cat that has entered their home are. Cats are also very scared of unexpected objects. And you might say, what's that? Well, some time ago it became fashionable on the Internet to scare cats, as you can see with cucumbers. They would put a cucumber behind the cat when it was unprepared, and when the cat suddenly turned around and saw it, it would jump and bounce because it was completely scared. The explanation that everyone gave on the Internet was, well, the cat looks back and suddenly thinks that the cucumber is a snake and that's why it acts like that. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's simply that it wasn't there a few seconds ago. And suddenly I look and I find it stuck to my body. And on top of that, it's an object of a fairly intense green color. And precisely one of the colors that cats see best as green. So what they had placed behind the poor cat was very difficult to go unnoticed and not scare it. And cats also tend to get scared of people and animals, which, although it's not something that appears suddenly or shouldn't, it can also have a big impact on a cat that isn't used to it. That's why it's so important that every time we're going to change a cat's environment. For example, if a person comes to live in our house, or if we introduce another cat or a dog, we make a proper introduction so that our feline companion gradually gets used to its presence and scares us, sees that it is completely harmless. As you can see, if a cat gets scared occasionally, it should not cause any type of problem. It will not cause any stress because it is suddenly exploring and throws something. Well, at that moment, it will get scared and go and hide, but it will not affect it in its later life. It is a different thing if we use our cats to have fun, like this thing I mentioned about the cucumber. This can affect them very negatively, because our cat goes from being in an environment that it controls and where it knows that there is nothing that can harm it, to a completely changing environment where suddenly anything can be stalking or attacking it, even if it is a simple vegetable like a cucumber. This causes a lot of anxiety to our feline companion because it cannot control the environment in which it lives, and above all, because it cannot trust you beyond all the ethical implications it has. When you use your cat to have fun, to laugh, or to upload a video to the Internet, it also causes a lot of anxiety. You are affecting them a lot. Anyone who lives with a cat knows how important it is to keep stress at bay in the lives of our feline companions, because it can lead to certain diseases. The most common ones are urinary tract infections. Sometimes our cats produce stones and small stones that prevent them from urinating. This is called flu. But stress also negatively affects the immune system of our cats. For example.
