¿Por qué tu GATO hace PIS FUERA DEL ARENERO? | ¿Cómo corregir este comportamiento?

Carlos, a veterinarian, explains why cats pee outside the litter box and how to fix it. The causes range from health problems and stress to litter box preferences. He covers practical steps to get your cat back to using the box.
Today, I'm going to tell you eight different reasons why your cat doesn't pee in the litter box. And we're also going to see how to correct it. Hello, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. There are certain questions that are repeated quite frequently on the channel in the comments of the videos and. But there is one that also worries you, especially why does my cat pee outside the litter box? That's why. In this video, I bring you the definitive method so that you can find out why your cat is not using its litter box. To do this, we are going to start with two main assumptions. The first one is that my cat has never used its litter box. And the second one is that my cat has stopped using it after a certain time. From here, each person should evaluate how their cat behaves and check. Because in the end, we will get to the reason why it is not using it. Let's start with my cat has never used its litter box. Now I have to ask you a question. Does your cat go outside? If the answer is yes, then we have the real reason why your cat is not using its litter box. Because your cat defecates or does its business in the garden, on the street, or wherever it can go out. Cats generally like to pee and poop away from other areas of their home, from the place where they eat or the place where they rest. And this is the reason why. If your feline companion already has a favorite area to do its business, it will never use the box that you are putting inside your house. But people who know that their cat goes outside will know that their cat does it outside the litter box because it does it outside, right?
Well, it may seem silly to you, but there are many people who, when they ask me why their cat does not use the litter box, have not considered that it is because they do it outside the house. And this may be a click that expands the light bulb of the reason why their cat does not do it in the litter box. In this case, if you are okay with your cat going outside, which is something I do not recommend under any circumstances, you don't have to worry about your cat not using its litter box because, believe me, the cat is doing it where it is most convenient and where it likes it the most. But I know that many people will ask you that they want their cat to do it in the litter box even though they go outside. Is there any kind of trick to this? The only thing would be when you decide to restrict your cat from going outside. In that case, if the cat, for example, does it in the garden, you can start putting a litter box nearby. I recommend covering it so that the litter does not get wet, because otherwise the cat will not use it either. And once it has gotten used to using that litter box, it may start using it inside the house. But if the cat still has free access to the street, it probably will not use the one in the house. If the answer to yes, let them go outside is no. If your cat doesn't go outside but has never used their litter box, there could be three main reasons. The first is because they don't like their litter box or the type of litter box you've put in your house. Some cats prefer covered litter boxes and others uncovered litter boxes. If you see that your cat isn't using their litter box, try putting a covered one in if they used to use an uncovered one, or an uncovered one if they used to use a covered one to see if they start using their litter box. But if they still don't use it, it could be that they don't like the litter, the type of litter you're putting in. Cats tend to have certain problems with textures, because if they don't like a certain texture, sometimes they won't touch it with their paws. If you're putting in a very pointy litter, like silica, some cats will start to refuse to use that litter box. Then try changing the type of litter box. And the most important reason why a cat never uses its litter box and does not go outside is probably because it does not like where that litter box is placed. Cats, as I have told you many times on the channel, need a more private area to relieve themselves to do their business. If your cat does not like where its litter box is placed, it is very likely that they will never use it and will look for another location in your house, which will most likely be your flower pots. One recommendation that I make if your cat does not do its business in the litter box and does not go outside your house is that you observe it and also make small changes in your house. For example, if you have a covered litter box that you have placed in a hallway and which your cat does not use, try moving it to the area where your cat normally relieves itself, for example, the flower pots that I mentioned before, and see if your cat decides to use it. Because in that case, the problem was the location. In short, the type of litter box, the type of litter, and the location are the three most common reasons why a cat does not use or has never used its litter box, and you can do some small experiments at home to find out what the real reason is. Let's go. And now let's move on to the second of the big assumptions. My cat has stopped using its litter box. Now I ask you, have you noticed any changes in your cat? If the answer is yes, and your cat also lives with another cat, you, you've noticed that they're a bit more restless and so on, or they don't get along with another cat in the house, it's possible that your feline companion doesn't use its litter box because it feels intimidated, because your other cat doesn't leave it alone when it's using it, because they compete for that resource. And perhaps when that cat enters, the other one becomes a bit more aggressive and all those things. In these cases, you're going to have to apply a rule that we veterinarians often recommend, which is the rule of N1 know of cats that live with this at home. And you should always add another litter box. In other words, if two cats live in our house, we should have at least three litter boxes. And if we also have different types of litter boxes, much better. One covered, one uncovered, one in one area, another perhaps a little higher, like this, the cat will be able to choose the one that suits it best and will be able to defecate without the other getting nervous. Strange colored urine. If your cat has stopped doing its business in the litter box and you also notice that its urine is a different color, dark, reddish, or that it even pees small amounts throughout the rest of your house, we can suspect that it is suffering from a health problem. And this problem is usually flut Feline lower urinary tract syndrome. In the event that the urine has strange colors, you, you have to take the cat to the vet no matter what, because as I am saying, it is a health problem. In addition, these types of problems are usually triggered by stressful situations, changes that have occurred in your home, very loud noises, construction work on the floor above, and a host of other things that can stress our feline companions. Crystals begin to develop in their bladders, in the urine, which are tiny, very small particles that are not visible in the pee, but which cause a lot of damage to the wall of the bladder and the urethra, the part where the pee exits the body. This causes our feline companion to have the urge to pee regularly and also produces a little blood. That is why you see a strange color in the pee. If this is happening to your cat in Addition to listening to your vet, there are things we can do to improve their life, such as using synthetic feline facial pheromones, which I talk about ad nauseam. And you probably already know what they are. But hey, for those who don't know if you're new to this video, these are substances that don't smell at all and that help our feline companions be much more relaxed at home. And now let's talk about a change that you probably haven't noticed, but that unfortunately has happened. Your cat is older. Sometimes when our feline companions get older, they. They start to develop something similar to senile dementia that we humans have, which is called cognitive dysfunction syndrome. Cats that suffer from this syndrome don't get their bearings very well in the house, and sometimes they're not able to find their litter box. Therefore, they end up peeing wherever they can, wherever they can, the poor things, since they're so old, we can't even get mad at them. In these cases, in addition to the medications that your vet may recommend, what you can do is help improve your cat's life by placing different litter boxes throughout your home, even if you only live with one cat, so that your cat always has one within reach of its paw. But, Izzy, you haven't noticed any changes in your feline companion? What's going on then? Why isn't it using its litter box in these cases? If we've ruled out all of the above, if we haven't seen any changes in the house, no changes in the cat. If our cat doesn't go outside and can't do it anywhere else, it's most likely that your cat has decided to stop using its litter box because it's dirty. I'm not saying that you're an unclean person, but sometimes we forget to change the litter frequently. Clean all the wet areas, or we've even put a layer of clean litter on top of dirty litter, which means that the litter will still smell. And the cat is very likely to say, look, you go in there, because I don't want to go in there. Also, when the litter box is dirty or smells bad, cats tell us very directly they do their business right next to the litter box or in the areas closest to it. If your cat has started to exhibit this type of behavior, it is sending you a message. Clean the litter box and air it out. Well, in fact, we have already given you advice on the channel for maintaining your cat's litter box. I'll leave the video here and also in the description box. In addition, there are some small things that can help us a lot with the odors in the tray, which are activated carbon filters that can be installed. This way, all the gases that are produced do not escape or are captured by the activated carbon, which will make it smell less and your cat will be happier. But be careful. Not cleaning the litter box is just as bad as cleaning it too much, or above all, cleaning it with unsuitable cleaning products. If you use very strong cleaning products with a very strong smell, your feline companion may decide to use their litter box because they don't like the smell. That's why I always recommend that you use neutral, odorless soaps to clean the box, especially if the litter box is covered so that your cat doesn't notice them and continues using their litter box. And now for a bonus tip. Some people tell me that their feline companion continues to use their litter box, but sometimes they pee outside sporadically, even if they used their litter box that same day. In fact, some of these people tell me that they pee on their arm or on their slippers in a lot of places. What's happening to the cat? The most common reason for this is primarily because of marking. Because the cat, for example, is in heat war, wants to go outside or has detected an intruder who has come too close to your home, and that's why they're marking. And be careful, because marking is not only done by male cats, females can do it too. The second reason may be because they are trying to get your attention. Sometimes our feline companions want us to do something, and we decide to voluntarily or involuntarily ignore them, which seems like a good option to me because otherwise your cat knows how to blackmail you. Many cats, in addition to meowing at you and constantly being annoying behind you, meow, meow, meow, decide to take action and directly pee on your hand, on your leg, on your pants, or on your slippers. They do this because after they have peed, you get up and decide to give them what they were asking for, which is probably food to stop them from doing this. Watch. What you have to do is distract them when they are about to pee directly, moving them away or throwing them some kind of toy so that they do not urinate. But what you should never do is get up and give it food, because in that case you are reinforcing negative behavior. And the cat will know that if it urinates somewhere it shouldn't. You will feed it. But beware. There is a bonus track. Too many people tell me that their cat systematically does it on the bed. In this case, it is most likely that the cat has gotten used to doing it up there because at first it did not like its litter box. It was not within reach, or there was some kind of obstacle for it to defecate in the tray. What happened? One day the cat peed on a bed. That pee penetrated the fabric of the bed or even onto the mattress. The smell of the cat's pee has been impregnated on that mattress, which it will recognize as the area to defecate. And that is why it will continue to do it. Even if you already have a litter box that suits your cat, that your cat likes in a specific place where he can go well, he's still going to go to bed because he's going to recognize the pheromones in his pee and the smells of his pee there. And he's going to say, okay, well, this is the area to pee. How can you avoid this? Well, there are basically two options. The first is to prevent him from having access to that area, that is close the door. The second is to clean the area where the cat has peed very well to eliminate all the pheromones that the cat may have left there. In that case, you can also use something I've already told you about, synthetic feline facial pheromones, which appear the second time in the video. Why where we mark with feline facial pheromones, cats know that they don't pee or poop or anything like that. And that's how they realize that this is not the right place to do it. And here I have left you a bunch of reasons why your cat is not using its litter box. And I hope I have also resolved all your doubts. But if you have also discovered any other reason why your cat was not using its litter box and you have found a different solution, you can leave it in the comments so that all the members of Happy pets and families of this great community can learn about it or take it into account in the event that their cat does not use its litter box. And if you liked the video, give it a like so that I know that you liked it and that YouTube also finds out. Also, remember to subscribe to this channel if you haven't already. And if you click the bell, sometimes even YouTube will notify you. And today we meet Komita, who looks like someone is not taking A picture of him and who lives with Carol in Colombia. And here we have Haku, who in the photo was almost a year old. Now he's almost 2 and lives with Miriam Nieto in Barcelona. Sorry, we're running a little late. And Paola introduces us to her feline companion, Bruno, who she says loves to keep her company while she works so that he can see everything she's doing. You're watching us from Bogota, Colombia. Thank you very much for following the channel pets and happy families. And I'll see you in the next video. And I'm also going to tell you how to fix it. There's like an echo, right? Oh, hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. If the answer is yes, it's veil. No. There are people who have asked me. Okay, just so you know, don't worry. The cat is doing it outside. That's why in this video we're going to answer the main questions about why your cat. Uh, no, I don't like it. We're going to answer them.
I want to say that we are.
Going to answer because we are going to answer very much like an American YouTuber, because in order not to. Not to. To know which are nos. And in this way they will prevent the cat from peeing. To get your attention, there are cats that prefer covered litter boxes and others for uncovered litter boxes. Covered litter boxes. At least three litter boxes. Litter boxes. No, let's start with the litter box. Let's go with the answer. It is no. It is that the litter box is dirty. Okay. Because it is a bit the most surprising. Okay. To find out. Let's see, maybe not. Ah. The most common causes. Okay.
That, that, that. And now I am going to give you a bonus track to all this. You can tell me that you can't.
