Veterinarian Carlos breaks down supermarket cat products that don't work as advertised. Cat cologne, malt for hairballs, repellent pipettes, dental treats, and yogurt all fall short of their marketing claims.
Foreign Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. To the cat. It seems that you still don't know what we do here every day. Many times, among the infinite range of things that we find in the supermarket for our kitties, we can feel a little lost because of course, we go there and see a lot of things on the shelf that may sound familiar and that perhaps we don't know very well what they are for. That's why today I'm going to talk to you about some products that you can find in your supermarket that are not what they seem. I'm going to organize them into two categories. Some that are not bad, although they can lead to mistakes, and others that you should not buy for your cat at all. Let's start with the ones that you shouldn't buy so that even if you're watching the video right now, they stick in your head. More cat cologne. Well, today I'm not going to tell you the usual story about how cats don't want to smell like roses and wildflowers, but rather that they need to smell like cats, and that's precisely what they like to smell like. The subject of colognes is always something that we humans understand that perhaps our cats can use to camouflage certain odors. Well, I ended up telling you about it. That's why cologne, even if it's specifically for cats, is it? But you might say to me, but my cat smells bad. Is it because he got dirty with his poop, for example? Well, that's precisely why we have a video where I explain how you can make a homemade dry shampoo for our feline companions that specifically combats bad odors with some very, very simple things that we have around the house and that are completely harmless and safe for our cats. But today we're here to talk about specific products. For example, this cologne that I found at Mercadona and that many of you have told me about. When I tell you that you should always look for products that are suitable for your animal companions, well, most people think of something like a little bottle with a very, very cute cat drawing on it. That means this cologne is suitable for cats. Well, look, the answer is no. I'm not going to give you clickbait here or leave you in suspense for too long. And why? Well, because if you turn it over and you can read the label here in the instructions for use and the safety instructions, you can clearly see do not ingest. This seems almost sarcastic to me because who came up with the idea of creating a cologne that in theory is specifically for cats and that is applied to the furniture that cannot be ingested. When our cats, well, their main activity apart from sleeping is grooming themselves. So that is precisely the reason why I do not recommend that you use this cologne. Come on, I've already told you that neither this nor any other. But specifically, if it says on the back that it cannot be ingested, well, that makes me reject it. And please, please do not trust everything that is written on the label. For example, here it says recommended by veterinarians. Introduce me to the veterinarian who recommends it. And of course you might tell man here, when I say don't eat it, they mean don't open the bottle and take a sip. But if I always tell you to try to avoid all kinds of artificial aromas, for example in their lil stones or putting products on their hair that could be harmful to our feline companions, I prefer to be a little safe and avoid using these types of products because if it's not going to provide any kind of benefit to the cat, and I've already told you that they don't usually like to smell strange things. Well, look, that's not what we use it for. Well, maybe you've never thought of buying cologne, but I'm sure that the following product I'm referring to is cat malt. Mmm, cheese flavored. You're probably familiar with this malt because I bought it at Merkadona, although you might be able to find similar ones at other supermarkets. This one in particular is cheese flavored and it says it helps eliminate hairballs. Okay, so why don't I want you to buy these types of products for your feline friends? Look, I'll explain it to you very simply. There are a number of scientific studies that you can consult because I'll leave them below in the description box. Which study precisely how the amount of fiber we give our feline companion influences the prevention of hairballs. The amount of fiber has a beneficial effect on long haired cats because they are precisely the ones that can have the most problems. Because they swallow more hair, their hair is much longer. However, the same study shows that for short haired cats such as the French bulldog, it does not give them any advantage whatsoever if we give them added fiber to prevent them from developing hairballs so that they can expel them in their poop. Which is precisely what fiber does. It facilitates evacuation through the feces. So this already makes one thing. If this product is useful for evacuating hairballs and Short haired cats, normally if they don't have any skin problems, if their hair isn't falling out too much, because I don't know, they have some dermatitis or because they are too stressed, they don't develop problems with hairballs. We shouldn't use malt anymore. But in addition to this, it has been studied that it only has a beneficial effect for preventing hairballs. Amounts of fiber in the total diet of our cats that are above 2%. And most studies say that it should be at least 11%. So if your cat needs to eliminate hairballs, this product specifically works for them. Well, if I'm telling you not to buy it, it's because it's not. If we look at the amount of fiber that this product provides, this malt, it's only 0.2%. Therefore this is not going to do anything with hairballs. Also, if you read the composition a little, what we can see is that it provides up to 36.5% fat, which can make our feline companion fat. And that their pancreas also has to work a little harder to digest all that fat. So you think that you are buying this to give your cat more fiber, but what you are giving them is a snack and a very fatty one. So that is another thing that I reject. And instead of this, if you want to give your cat extra fiber, make sure that they always have cat grass nearby. Otherwise opt for dry food, kibble feed and croquettes for our cats that have supplemented fiber. Although I insist that hairballs are a problem for very few cats on a regular basis. For short haired cats, practically none. And for long haired cats, they may swallow a little more hair. Well, but not everything you find in the supermarket has to be so bad. There are some things that are okay. The thing is that they are sold to you for a specific purpose. And I can tell you that many of these things are not what they seem. Let's start by talking about pipettes for cats. And of course you might say to me, well, but my cat needs pipettes, right? To fight its parasites. Well, yes, that's true, but we need pipettes that can kill fleas, ticks and all those little bugs that can climb on our cats. It's possible that when you see them on the supermarket shelf, you think that they serve the same purpose and that you say, well, here are four pipettes, very good, I'm going to give them to my cat and I don't have any problems. In addition, the box also says that they are for ticks, mosquitoes, Mites, lice, fleas, and that you have to use them once a month. In other words, they are quite similar to those other pipettes that you can find in veterinary clinics, pharmacies or specialty stores. But of course the difference is that it says repellent pipettes on top. And if you don't have a very sharp eye, you might not know the difference between whether they are repellents or whether they kill fleas, ticks and lice. Repellents don't kill these bugs, they just make them not want to be on your cat. In other words, if your feline companion goes outside and comes back with fleas and you put a repellent pipette on them, they will leave your cat, but they will spread throughout your house, sofas, beds, curtains, little cats and so on. So we wouldn't have solved the problem because they can get back on your cat when the pipette wears off, or they can get on you and bite you or any member of your family and even lay eggs inside your house. I found these pipettes at Lidl, but I think you can see them in all supermarkets because there are a lot of them that are very similar. And all the pipettes that say repellent have the same characteristics. These pipettes use a product or substance called geraniole. It comes from geranium and is a completely safe product for our feline companions. But don't be fooled. They are not what they seem. They. If you want to use them, I would recommend that you always use another antiparasitic method that kills the bugs. Let's go. And if you want to know which anti parasitic products you can use with your cats, because there are many, well, we've talked about that and I made a short guide for you in a video here on the channel that I'll link to in the description box. Well, now let's move on to some products that they eat and that I know you buy very often for your feline companions because you think you're doing them a big favor. But again, appearances can be deceiving. Biscuits to clean our cat's teeth. I bought this at a supermarket called bm, which is part of the IFA Group, but they sell it in many other supermarkets and specialty stores. And as you can see, well, it's a very famous brand of cat food. The product is easily recognizable because it's called, well, Dental Life. And what it promises is that it will help our feline companions keep their teeth clean. And well, you might say to me, well, Carlos, that's great, because you always tell us that our cats end up suffering from dental problems because tartar builds up and then they have periodontal disease and that not only causes their teeth to fall out, but it can also affect their kidneys. Yes, yes, all of that is true. We have to take care of our cat's teeth and prevent them from getting full of dirt like plaque and tartar. But is this the most suitable product for them? Well, the short answer is no, but the long answer is a no with nuances. These types of products that are like little cookies that your cat is going to bite. Well, it says so here. Right? Scientifically proven to reduce tartar buildup. It has a porous texture to surround all sides of the tooth. And it also has calcium and taurine and no added colorings. Well, it is true that they can help your cat build up tartar because it has been scientifically proven that when our cat chews on hard things, their teeth get clean. It's as if these hard things act as a kind of toothbrush. When they put their fangs or their teeth in, the tartar is removed. So you want to buy these cookies for your cat to help with tartar. Well, what's the difference between these cookies and their dry food? Their dry food, their care, their kibble, both have the same effect. They reduce the amount of tartar. So these types of products are basically treats. But there's one thing I have to tell you, and I have to warn you about that comes up here, very, very small. For this to have a visible effect on your cat's tartar, you have to give it 17 treats a day. For a 2.5kg cat. I don't know how many it contains, but it's only 40 grams. So you could use this packet in two days. In other words, if you only give it one a day or once in a while, it won't have any kind of advantage or benefit compared to your cat eating dry food. But I also don't recommend that you give your cat 17 treats a day. That means that you're going to give it a large amount of calories, fats and proteins on top of its diet. If you're going to give it 17, we'd have to adjust its normal food and we're going to reduce the normal food which has a better composition. You've carefully selected it so that it has the best raw materials, so an optimal amount of fats, proteins, everything our cat needs to give it after all treats. Well, look, it doesn't make any sense. And also the. You're not spending a fortune on feeding it because if you buy this to give it half a packet every day, just imagine. So this is the product that by definition is not what it seems. Because you think that with a cookie you are brushing your cat's teeth and you are doing absolutely nothing. Well, now I'm going to tell you about one of those products that has gone viral over time and that we have seen ad nauseam on social media related to our cats and well on TikTok or well on any social media basically. And of course it is available to everyone because they sell it in practically any supermarket. I'm referring to yogurt for cats to begin with. The packaging, the packaging they give it on the outside is a product very similar to the one given to small children for a snack. In other words, it makes us see that we are giving this to our cat because our cat is practically like our baby and is going to need it because this is very important for its nutrition. That is basically what the manufacturer wants to achieve with this. In this way we are humanizing our feline companions a bit. We see here that it is a kind of yogurt. We eat our yogurt which makes us feel great and we say, hey, why don't we give it to our cats? You might think that after, I don't know, after your cat has dinner, we can put their yogurt on it. However, what we are giving our cats is just a treat, another little treat that your cat doesn't need because with its usual food it is perfectly nourished, it doesn't need yogurt. And of course I'm not talking about the lactose issue because some people will tell me, well, but cats are also lactose intolerant. Well, the manufacturer has taken care here and well, they have used lactose free milk to make the yogurt. So it shouldn't be a problem for a normal cat to digest. But I didn't choose this yogurt randomly because there were several, but I chose this one in particular because it says it has prebiotics which are not probiotics. A probiotic, which is what they are most famous for are microorganisms, bacteria or yeasts that have a beneficial effect on the intestinal flora, on the microorganisms that we have in our intestines. But a prebiotic is not exactly that. It is a food that incorporates certain types of nutrients that can benefit that intestinal flora. But of course you see this and say prebiotics, probiotics. Well, it's the Same. I'll take it for my cat, because we've all been sold the idea of lactobacilli or something in some brands of yogurt. So you think that's what you're giving your cat, but it's not. Also, let me express a personal concern here. The topic of prebiotics and probiotics in cats has been very, very poorly studied. There are no specific studies on them. Instead, information from people or even some information from dogs has always been extrapolated to our feline companions. As always, there is much less research on cats. So let me put aside for a moment the idea that these prebiotics will have a beneficial effect on our cats. So we only have to consider this as if it were a snack. And as such, we should give it to our cats if we decide to give it to them, but not because our cat is going to need it or because we think it will have a direct effect on their health. As I always say, the basis of our cat's diet has to be the food that you have chosen to give them on a regular routine, daily, daily basis. Anything that is treats, snacks, cookies and all those things can be given to them, but very, very sporadically. So to summarize, pipettes, yogurt and these little dental treats are things that are not what they seem. But hey, they can even be somewhat useful. But of course, I wouldn't buy this or that. Have you ever bought any of these products for your cat? Well, leave me a comment so we can all find out. Also, if you want to support us a lot, remember that you can give us a. Like, subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and give us a super thank you. If you want to support us a lot, we also have a secondary channel called Questions and Answers from a veterinarian. Head over and take a look. And don't leave yet because we have to meet. Here we have two kittens who greet us from the antipodes, specifically from Sydney. They are Wasabi and Anabela, and they live with their human partner, Amelia. And this little one is called Mia. She greets us with her human partner, Ricardo from Peru. He gave her a second chance by rescuing her. And this pretty girl is called Pacha, who lives with her human companions. Well, her human companion actually tells me that her favorite human is her. Greetings to you, Laura. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video with this. Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. Kitty. A kitty. Come here. Come. Oh, come here. Look it's nice, but today we're here to talk about products. Wait, this is recording, right? Yes, just like talcum powder. Don't lick it. Well, I'm not a chemist, but let's say water, polyethylene, glycerol. Well, I don't know. Those are already things. But anyway. And also, let me say. I'm mean. Okay, kitty, I'm going to put you down. I'm sorry. Because I'm boiling. This is a cab blanket. What's up? You're really comfortable, right? That they sell it to you for a purpose? That is not what it seems. That is not. No. Things seem one thing and they are not the products that are not what they seem that we see in the video. They eat both. Oh, no, no. It is not that it is healthy. If it is healthy, it is not. I mean, if it is neither healthy nor unhealthy. I mean. Well, yes, but it is a reward also. They sell it to you like yogurt for small children. It is very strong. I have chosen this one in particular because it says it has probiotics. Ah, prebiotics. Research. So we will leave it there. That's it. It is a personal opinion. Let me just leave it in quarantine. That's it. It is what it is. And that's it. Well, no, but you can give it to him as a cookie from time to time. I mean, the cat likes it. That's it. It is a reward. It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. Oh, your kitty is going to take probiotics, prebiotics and everything. This cat is going to take.
