Qué tipo de collar usar para pasear a mi perro

Jordy Herrera, a dog trainer, explains which collars work best for walking your dog. He covers different collar types, how they affect your dog's behavior, and what keeps your dog comfortable and safe on walks.
Foreign.
Hi, I'm Jordy Herrera. I work in dog training.
Okay.
The world of dogs. I try to help them with what I know about them. And I'd like to talk to you a little bit about walking equipment, okay? How to use it and what equipment to use, especially to make a walk as comfortable as possible, which is what matters in the end. So that the dog enjoys it as much as possible, so that there are as few problems as possible, and it's good for both the dog and us. Well, let's divide it into two parts. We have the material, let's say the collar or harness, and then the extension, the leash.
Okay?
There are 1000 types of collars for sale, but we would divide them between training collars, which are called punishment collars, and normal collars, let's say.
Okay.
I'll explain a little bit about each one, why they have been used or why they haven't been used, and a little bit about the negative consequences they can have for the dog. We have a very traditional type of collar that has been used forever, fortunately, less and less, which is the metal collar that is mainly called training. But what it is is a collar, a choke collar, okay? It is as simple as putting it on the dog. If the dog runs, the collar pulls. If the collar pulls, the dog is strangled, it bothers him, and it is understood that before the discomfort decides to stop, okay? It is an indisputable method of breaking it. Derived from this, at the time an extension appears, which is the same with spikes, not to mention the breaking, and accompanied by a compression with spikes, that is even more annoying. So the consequence on the dog is even more intense.
Okay?
Mainly, these collars, beyond the physical discomfort that it generates for the dog, generate a reinforcement issue. Of course, the dog receives discomfort, even physical damage, and it makes what it is seeing become something unpleasant and undesirable. Behaviors, even aggressive behaviors, can quickly develop towards things as absurd as a park bench, a bicycle, or a person passing by on the street.
Right?
By correcting a leash pull with these types of materials, you can make the dog develop fears and react in a complicated way towards people or objects that they shouldn't have.
Right?
So much for an easy way to avoid behavioral problems on walks. From the start, that's a good material. Luckily, at the time, it seemed like the normal collar, a nylon collar, right? An adjustable type collar that has no complications. There are one in a thousand ways that it is much better than any punishment collar. This is no longer a training collar. It is a walking collar. That's what it's called. Even though it is much better than a punishment training collar, it has its complications. Basically, it is squeezing an area of the dog's neck where there is little muscle and it can cause problems. Problems such as pharyngeal problems and even thyroid problems.
Right.
Problems have been diagnosed in dogs due to constant pulling.
Right.
Other types of collars, safety collars, as they are called.
Right.
These mainly appear in the world of greyhounds. They have their logical part, which is to prevent the dog from pulling its neck out. A pull on the back causes a mini strangulation.
Right.
But in my opinion, they would also be replaceable. Why would they be replaceable? Well, with a harness, the typical harness.
Right.
A typical harness that is associated with a completely false legend that says that a dog with a harness pulls more than a dog with a collar.
Right.
It's true. A dog with a harness is certainly more comfortable than a dog with a collar.
Right.
Why? Because there is no pressure on the neck. And what it has is a tool adapted to its body.
Right.
That allows him to walk much more comfortably. There are 1,000 types. I would especially recommend those that have a single strap at the bottom because otherwise they sometimes cause wounds in the dog's armpits.
Okay.
But they are all adjustable to the size of the dog, even to the width of the dog's torso. That is why it is perhaps not necessary for a greyhound to always wear this type of collar. You can look for a harness that adapts to your physique and you will be much more comfortable, Safe.
Okay.
I will take this opportunity to talk about another type of collar, also corrective, more modern, perhaps much more similar to the traditional ones, which is a collar that is placed on the dog's muzzle.
Okay.
This type of collar prevents the dog from pulling. It also prevents the dog from pulling. But how do they prevent it? They prevent it by turning the dog's neck when it pulls. The dog has this harness on, this. Sorry, this collar on its muzzle.
Okay.
So every time the dog pulls, it turns the dog's neck. Needless to say, if you constantly twist the dog's neck, you're going to cause it pain in the end. If the dog weighs 40 or 50 kg, it will be harder to do that damage. But a small dog can quickly cause serious problems.
Right.
And with the consequent negative conditioning that this entails, as would any punishment or damn training collar.
Okay?
So we have a harness dog. The best thing you can do with a harness, 1,000 types. The one that suits you the most, the one you like the most? There are a million. What do we use with it? A leash. This is clear. There's no other way.
Okay.
Types of leash. There are very short leashes, right? There are leashes, well, about a meter and a half long, a little longer, which would be the typical leash for a city dog, let's say.
Okay.
There are extendable leashes that are very typical for very light dogs, and there are very long leashes. A 4 or 5 meters leash can be perfect.
Okay?
Well, the leash is really a safety element in case there is a problem, okay? It is not a control element, but a safety element. What happens when a leash is used as a control element that you prefer to use a very short leash because you have your dog under constant control.
Okay?
Here you are changing the objective of the walk. The objective of a walk is not for the dog to be controlled, but for the dog to exercise its social need, which is basically based on lowering its head and sniffing the ground. From there it can develop its social needs, okay? In its own way, in the dog's way, this prevents it because any dog on a short leash is constantly under tension. Any movement that goes beyond moving half a meter away from the person it is with involves tension and correction and always maintaining a line in which the walk passes and it is not meeting any social need.
Okay?
This leash is a type of leash for dogs considered potentially dangerous. The social fear generated towards these breeds causes owners as a precaution and understandably to prevent the dog from having any distance and create a problem beyond what could be generated with a normal leash. Dogs that are not considered dangerous and that in theory have an acceptable social life, the ones that do cause problems usually come with a leash like this. In urban areas, a leash that is one and a half meters long, okay? In my opinion, it is very insufficient for a dog to satisfy its social needs. Why? Because you are giving it a radius of enjoyment of approximately 1 meter and the street offers much more than 1 meter. There are many things that can be offered to it.
Okay?
Another type of leash that is used especially with small animals is the extendable leash, which does allow the animal to stretch out more. There are five and eight meters ones which allow a lot of distance, okay? But it has a small drawback that I will explain when we talk about the leash which we understand should be used with all types of dogs. Big, small, fat, skinny, it doesn't matter dogs.
Okay?
It's a long leash. A long leash, preferably no less than 4 meters. Between 4 and 5 meters, okay? This means that you have to walk down the street with a 4 or 5 meters leash and the dog at that distance will 5 meters from you. Obviously not, but it is a leash that allows the dog to separate from you a comfortable distance and a significant distance without causing any pulling tension, without it being a problem.
Okay?
The main objective, which we will talk about more later on in the walk, is that the dog can walk without tension. That's mainly it.
Okay?
And a long leash allows you to do that because it gives you that freedom. And here comes the problem with this type of extendable leash, that its shape is, its design always generates tension. We never ever find this leash in this position. We always find it in absolute tension. So the dog notices that tension and will never end up finding the point of comfort that allows it to focus on what is truly important, which is the street and the smells and interacting with a dog, etc. Etc. Therefore, the perfect and even necessary combination would be this one, a harness of any type and a long leash. Well, I hope you have enjoyed these short explanatory videos, that they have helped you to understand your dog better and that you participate in a much closer coexistence, if possible, with your pet.
