The Fila Brasileiro is a large and powerful dog that was used in its country of origin as a property guardian, hunter of large game and protector of picuno cattle. This breed was developed in Brazil due to the need of the first settlers to have an energetic and strong working dog. The first documents date back to 1671, but the exact origins are unknown. Even so, everyone agrees that they arose from the crossing of three different breeds of the old bulldogs, the English Mastiff and the Bloodhounds. The first official standard of the breed was written around 1968 and since then it has come to be considered the most popular dog breed in Brazil. It is a large sized molosser dog with a powerful and compact appearance. Its lips, eyes and ears stand out for being droopy. Males measure between 65 and 75 centimeters at the withers and weigh a minimum of 50 kilograms. Females, on the other hand, measure between 60 and 70 centimeters at the withers and weighed a minimum of 40 kilogram. This is a calm and self confident dog that adapts to new environments and noises. It is also a courageous and determined dog, but noble and obedient to its family. Due to the development of the breed, it also has an aptitude for herding cattle and an innate tendency to look after what it considers its home. The Fela is an easy dog to care for and maintain. It will need weekly brushing and an occasional bath. After that, its entire body should be dried thoroughly, especially wrinkled areas to prevent the possible development of fungus. It will need moderate physical activity, taking about three walks a day and low impact exercise. It will also be stimulated with obedience exercises, skills and mental stimulation. The training of the Fila Brasileiro should begin when it is still a puppy between one and a half and three months old, with socialization, a process that consists of introducing it to dogs, people and environments.
