Did you know that only two of the dogs native to Mexico have actually been officially recognized by the different canine organizations? The rest are either extinct or are not registered as official breeds. However, so that you know them all. In this video by an animal expert, we will talk about the current Mexican dog breeds and share some interesting facts. Don't miss Chihuahua. The Chihuahua or Chihuahua is one of the most popular breeds in the world due to its small size and adorable appearance. Although its exact origin is unknown, archaeological remains found confirm that it is a dog native to Mexico. Most theories suggest that it descends from a now extinct Mexican dog called Tequichee or Talalchichi. This dog lived during the Toltec era and was depicted in paintings and decorations with an appearance very similar to that of the Chihuahua. As a curious fact, we can say that the original name of the breed is Chihuahua. Chihuahua is a variation created in the United States. Archaeological findings place this breed in the Aztec civilization, being the only living pre Hispanic Mexican dog. It is an ancient dog characterized by its absence of hair and a friendly nature. For the Aztecs, it was the living representation of the God of spirits and guardian of the underworld, which is why it was a highly respected animal. They believe that dogs acted as the official guides of the deceased on their journeys to the afterlife. For this reason, when someone died, they were sacrificed and buried in the tombs. However, the the representation of this dog does not end there. The Aztecs also believed that the Choloit Quintal was a dog with healing and protective abilities that alleviated pain and kept evil spirits away. After the colonization of America, the breed was on the verge of extinction. However, throughout the 19th century, some breeders committed to preserving it and managed to increase the number of specimens. It is currently the most representative and oldest Mexican dog breed, the Chamuco or Mexican Pit Bull. This dog has not been recognized by any organization, so only the previous two are considered official breeds of Mexico. The Chamuco, Mexican Dogo or Mexican Pit Bull arose from the cross between the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Old bulldog. Although it is suspected that boxer dogs and other bull type dogs could also have been crossed. Unfortunately, it was born to be used as a fighting dog, so much so that Chamuko translates to devil. It is a strong, muscular, tenacious, agile dog and smaller than the American Pit Bull. It is necessary to socialize and educate it correctly to enjoy a happy and affectionate dog. Kalupo. Large in size with black fur and a piercing gaze, the Colupo is a wolf dog that arose naturally as a result of the cross between the gray wolf and pre Hispanic Mexican dogs. However, it was not until 1999 that the first specimen was identified. Only the Mexican Kennel Club has recognized it and established the breed standard. Extinct Mexican Dogs over the years, remains of extinct pre Hispanic dogs have been discovered that acted as ancestors of some of the aforementioned breeds. Although research is still ongoing, the Autonomous University of Mexico and other studies have listed the following common dog or IC, Quintli, Tilal, Chichi and Mayan dog or short nosed dog.
