¿Redes, mallas, ventanas abatibles...? 🏠🐾😼| ¿Cómo proteger a tu gato en casa de accidentes?

This is a YouTube video titled "¿Redes, mallas, ventanas abatibles...? 🏠🐾😼| ¿Cómo proteger a tu gato en casa de accidentes?" created on January 15, 2020. The content features a clinical veterinarian named Carlos discussing various methods to cat-proof windows and balconies to prevent cats from falling or escaping. The video covers different protective materials such as nets, meshes, wooden lattices, and mosquito nets, including their pros, cons, installation tips, and pricing. The format is primarily a monologue with occasional interjections from a secondary speaker, but it is not a conversation involving Javier Pariente.
A cat next to an open window is a danger. How can we avoid it? Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. In terms of cat proofing the environment, the first thing you need to think about is how to protect the windows so that your cat can't jump out of them and suffer from what we know as parachute cat syndrome. There are many materials that you can use to make your window safe for your cat, such as nets, mosquito nets, mesh. Of course, with all these options, some are better and some are worse. And today I'm going to talk to you about precisely that in this video and I'm going to give you my personal opinion on which are the best options to protect your windows or even your balconies. Nets are one of the most commonly used because they allow us to cover very large spaces such as a terrace. And they are also quite economical. They are flexible and you can adapt them perfectly to any type of space. So they are quite convenient when you move to a new house. The nets are made of nylon. They are usually non toxic materials for cats, and some of them are reinforced internally with wire to make them strong and prevent your cat from falling out. They are also very easy to install. You don't need to be a DIY expert. Simply pass the rope at the end through the hooks or brackets that you have installed on the wall.
You insert this to tighten the net.
And then you can grab the rope with the ties.
Then they give you a rope.
Yes, this is attached like this. Then this is attached to the rings. That's where the rope is attached. It is very important that when you are installing the brackets on the wall, you do not leave them too far apart, because as I was saying, the net is a bit flexible and a cat's head can fit through a very small space. If its head fits through, I assure you its whole body will fit through and your cat could fall. And one very important thing that both Rokio and Lolay told us, since they both use nets in their flat, the nets have to be loose so that cats can't climb them. Also, these in particular are anti chew. On the other hand, since they are made of nylon, you will have to check from time to time, normally once a year, that the net is in good condition to do this. Pull it hard and if it breaks, it is time to change it, because that means it is not safe for your cat. And now let's move on to something else that interests you, which is the price you can find nets online from €4.99 per meter, those that are not reinforced with wire, or €3.66 for the reinforced net. And why is the reinforced one cheaper? I don't know, although it is clear that prices can vary a little and that this type of material, when bought by the meter and much longer, is usually cheaper. You will find similar nets in any hardware or DIY store. But it is good to buy them specifically for cats, because that way you can be sure that they are strong enough to withstand a cat jumping on them. And that, as I said before, they are non toxic. Because those that are toxic can be. Well, of course, if the material is not tested for contact with a cat, it may not be suitable. And what do I think about nets? For all that I have said, I quite like them. Carleel SEAL OF QUALITY MESHES Meshes are my favorites because, for example, they are the ones we have in my house so that my light does not escape. Meshes are very, very strong because they are made of metal. And that is precisely why cats cannot break them. The downside is that they are not as flexible as nets, so they will not be useful for covering a large surface. A mesh is not good for putting them on a terrace or a balcony. These types of systems are very interesting. And for example, in the windows of your house there are bars, because you will be able to attach the mesh to the bars and in this way you will give it the support it needs. They also last a long time because the sun does not affect them. Since they are made of metal, they will not deteriorate over time. They are.
They are toxic?
No, no, they are not toxic. And also the cat will not be able to eat them because it cannot break them. But of course you can also put them in a window that does not have bars. For that it does require a bit of DIY on your part. You can make a wooden frame that is the size of the window and attach the mesh there. Then the frame has to be very well attached to the wall, because if not your cat can give it a push, the frame can fall and your cat can fall with it. A very easy way to attach the frames is with latches. You can make a hole in the wall so that a latch fits in and holds the entire frame and therefore the mesh. I like them less with frames than with bars because I find them a bit flimsier. Honestly, for that type of thing, I prefer nets. And the money, the price, how much does it cost? Well, a meter of mesh can be around €2. Wooden lattices, this has become. I don't know if it's only fashionable here, but anyway, here in Andalusia, lattices are very typical because they're something traditional. You can find them in DIY stores and they're usually used as a decorative element in gardens and such. Some people use them on windows to keep their cats from escaping. For example, this is the option that Cynthia uses with Totoro on her balcony, which has bars. She has wooden lattices that are very decorative and he can't escape through them. Well, but first make sure that your cat can't fit through the gaps and doesn't do like Totoro. Again, the lattices will require your window to have bars because that will be what gives it support, what gives it resistance so that your cat doesn't push it and it falls and can get out. If you decide to put them on a window without bars, you will need a frame, and for that they usually have to be made to measure. That is why it is usually a much more expensive option and one that I do not usually recommend. It takes some time because they have to come and take the measurements, have the lattice made for you, and in all that time, what do you have on the window? How do you cat proof your environment? I won't tell you the price of these because, well, the installer who comes to take the measurements at your home will have to give you that. Obviously it will depend a bit on each professional, but this is certainly not the cheapest option.
But the decorative one, yes, yes.
Well, if you like it, and let's go with the classic, among classics, the mosquito nets. With mosquito nets you have to have, or at least I have, a love hate relationship, because it is true that the mosquito net will protect you from many other risks, such as mosquitoes that enter your home. They can bite your cat, they can bite you, and we know that mosquitoes transmit diseases. But the downside of mosquito nets is that they are not by far the most resistant option. Especially if you choose to put mosquito nets in your house that are made of nylon. Mosquito nets that are made of plastic, because since the plastic is so thin, it is so small that you can hardly see that it is on, the cat can tear them with its nails. In fact, I have come across many cats that had mosquito nets installed and thought that their windows were completely secure, who have ended up falling because they have seen something behind the window, they have torn the mosquito net, made a hole and have fallen. Therefore, if you decide to install mosquito nets, at least make sure they are made of metal. The mesh is made of metal so that it is more resistant to your cat's scratches. You will have to make custom mosquito nets because as I was saying, the material is flexible, it will not hold well to the edges and will require a frame. There are also some kits sold in some DIY stores where they sell you ready made profiles so that you can cut them out of metal and make your own mosquito net to attach to your window. As you can see, this one will require a little bit of DIY knowledge as they are not flexible and are not very resistant. There are also some mosquito nets that are installed and slide on the window. Well, for example, here in Spain we have typical sliding windows. Don't worry if you have windows that open inwards. If you have these types of windows, let me know in the comments so I can find out. With these sliding fly screens, you have to be very careful. Not because cats can open them, which usually have stoppers, so cats can't open them, but because you could forget them open. So you calmly leave your house thinking that your cat is safe and you've left a gap like this. Your cat can fit through there and could end up jumping out.
And the price?
Oh, that's right, the price. The price of the kits is more or less €30. I'm not even talking about the price of having someone come and take the measurements and make it directly for your window, because that will depend on each professional. If you choose the wood option, which will undoubtedly be less resistant, it will be a little cheaper, not much more. Therefore, I think that the kits are worth it in this case. And one last mention, I have to make for another type of system that I've seen out there that people use that are not at all safe. Like for example, reeds or that type of fabric, I don't know what it's called, Green shade fabric. Those kinds of things that are used in gardens so that no one can see you on the fence of your garden, but that people also usually put on the balcony so that their cats don't fall. Well, just a moment, I'll make a clarifying aside. I'm referring to these that you see behind Pikachu and that he has put up lol in his house. But in this case they are very safe because they have a mesh behind them. When I say that they are unsafe, it is when they are alone. Well, I think you understand me, right? Those are not safe at all because they are fragile materials. Your cat only has to do this a little with its paws for it to Make a hole in it and end up falling. Believe me, I know people who have had this happen to them. And special mention to casement windows. You might think that your cat is very safe if you only open the windows by lowering them inwards. Because you say, well, there's glass, the cat can't escape. But that's a huge mistake. The cat will see that little crack and say, this is mine. I'm going to go golfing outside. It will try to jump out and it's possible that it will get stuck in that area and not be able to get out. The window also has sharp edges and can end up cutting it and causing it quite a few wounds and a lot of damage. I'm telling you this because it happened to my Liu at home and my mother at first left it like that so that cat wouldn't get out and the room would air out. What happened? One day the kitten tried to jump first. It climbed onto the nightstand, jumped from the nightstand to the window and got stuck by its leg. Luckily, he didn't break his leg, although he almost did. But the window cut him badly, both inside and outside of his leg, which we had to treat for a very long time. If that had caught him, for example, here on the chest, it could have even killed him. There are some cats that have had spinal injuries precisely because they have gotten caught while jumping and ended up breaking their spine. I also have some tips for this type of system. There are some types of grilles that have just the right angle that the windows adopt when they swing inwards so that that area is protected and the cat can't escape. Well, these are all the methods that I know more or less well. If you have any other and you think it's safe and resistant for cats, let me know in the comments so I can find out how you do it. Well, me and the entire community of pets and happy families. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already, because our channel is as safe as a net. It has the properties of a mesh and it also adapts to your window like a mosquito net. It has it all and hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel and we'll see you in the next video how versatile our channel is. And as always, we are going to introduce your animal family, but not without first telling you Because I see that Jose is putting faces on me behind the camera that we have a secondary channel on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. In it we answer your questions in very, very, very short videos. I always say it, but it's true. Well, let's introduce your pets. Look, this little guy who is to Niya's family is called Kaiser and he is a kitty from Chilean Patagonia. Wow, how far away, how handsome Kaiser is. Oh, the little face. It looks like someone put him in a can of flour. Well, it only has this little white thing. Marcella introduces us to her two kittens, Begotas and Totoro, who is called Totoro precisely because she heard it here on the channel and liked it. Thank you very much, Marcella. And to all those who say that Totoro is not a cat, what do you have to say now? And Natalia introduces us to Yara A Suamis who tells me that since the weather is good, they went out for a walk and are taking a lil walk. Look how pretty Yara is. Wait, there are two cats. And why doesn't the other one tell me the name? And if you want us to meet your animal family, whether dogs or cats or whatever you have, what you have to do is introduce it to us in the Facebook group. We will see it there and we will put it in this section. See you next week. These types of windows that not only open like this, but also open like this. I'm going to do it. In my opinion, about this type of parrot, they are also very durable. They are also very durable because they are also very durable. They also last a long time. If nylon is. I don't know what it's called. It's not like I don't know what it's called. It's not like I don't know what. I don't know what. I don't know. I don't know. Or wait, let me check the cheat sheet. What? Oh, on Z plus A place where you buy common things. I also said that I look at it on ZOP plus.
Right? There's the difference. And I don't know if you're going to be able to put all this or just milus so that YouTube doesn't demonetize the video. Because since we're talking about things like this, YouTube might say it, your house is going to look like a bunker from World War II. But oh well, it's okay, mister.
