Síndrome del OJO SECO en PERROS 👀🐶 Causas y CÓMO CURARLO

This is a YouTube video titled "Síndrome del OJO SECO en PERROS 👀🐶 Causas y CÓMO CURARLO" created in April 2025. It features Narcis Ramon, head of the ophthalmology department at the Veterans Hospital of Santana, explaining the condition known as dry eye in dogs, particularly in brachycephalic breeds and older animals. The video discusses causes, symptoms, and treatments involving artificial tears to maintain corneal health.
Hi there. My name is Narcis Ramon. I'm the head of the ophthalmology department at the Veterans Hospital of Santana, and we're going to make a video for the animal expert team to explain a condition that is quite common in some breeds and in particular in older animals, which we colloquially call dry eye. What do we mean by dry eye? We mean that the cornea, as also happens in people, deteriorates over time as it is a structure that does not have its own hydration, but rather is nourished by tears. The cornea is the external part of the eye. It's what surrounds the eye to protect it, and it's like a plastic that needs hydration, and this hydration comes from tears. So when the cornea is damaged, we can have a series of secondary pathologies or problems due to this deterioration of the cornea, especially in terms of hyperforations, pigmentation, and all of that will prevent our dog from seeing well. Okay, which breeds are most predisposed? Well, brachycephalic breeds, the breeds that have the most bulging eyes. Why? Because these eyes are more exposed, and being more exposed means they need more moisture. And this moisture, I repeat, is caused by tears. What other problems do we have as we get older? Just like when they get older, the body produces fewer tears. This means that by producing fewer tears, we can have two either the quantity or in some cases, the quality of the tears. In other words, the tears are not distributed well across the corneal surface. And I repeat, there can be ulcers, perforations, pigmentation, and many problems of this type. What happens to these dogs? Well, it's good that they come to the doctor's office right away with eye problems, pain and perforations. And we're going to solve this by applying hydrating eye drops to the cornea, which we commonly call artificial tears. It's simply a matter of taking our dog, putting a drop of tear in it and massaging it so that the tears are distributed well in the eye and the cornea regains the texture and quality it should have. Let me repeat. We took Aramax, who is quite good, but as you can see, he is not a pure brachycephalic, but his eyes are very bulging. Okay, so his owner, his guardian, what he does every morning, okay, he cleans his dog. If he has a tear or whatever, and then he puts a little bit of eye booger on him or whatever he wants and puts a little tear on him, okay, that he has at home, he massages it, and that way his cornea is shiny. It's like putting shoe polish on your shoes. So you know what I mean? Okay. This happens to both parakecephalic breeds. When I talk about barkycephalyx, I'm talking about Brachycephalyx, I'm talking about Chihuahuas, bulldogs, shits, all these types of dogs that have characteristics, as we've said before, of having more bulging eyes. Also, in older dogs, it happens. Like with older people, we see that our grandparents put a drop of tears in their eyes every day or every few tears to hydrate the cornea. Well, this also happens in older dogs. And there are dogs that have some type of chronic treatment that also causes the body to secrete less tears. And then they should also be helped with artificial tears, always under veterinary supervision. And remember that the fact of not adding moisture to these eyes can later cause quite serious problems. Well, I think I've tried to explain this pathology to you as best I can. If you have any questions or want to train them better, remember that we have a training service called Voracion, which is at your disposal, and they will inform you there so that you can train. Yeah.
