Foreign. If when someone talks to you about litter boxes, you only think there are two types, covered and uncovered, you have to watch this video because I assure you, it will surprise you. Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian and this is Alcatofo. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. The world of cat litter trays is practically infinite, like the universe. That's why today I'm bringing you the pros and cons of each type of litter tray, so that you know which one is ideal for your feline companion. And of course, I'm going to talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of automatic litter trays, which I know you're interested in. Before we start, please subscribe to the channel if you haven't already, because lately the algorithm has been treating us badly and the videos hardly reach anyone. And by the way, share the video with your friends and family who live with cats. That way, I assure you'll help us a lot. Let's start with the two main types and what they are. Yes, you guessed it, covered and uncovered litter boxes. Let's start with the most basic ones, which are uncovered litter boxes. Tray type. These litter boxes have a series of features that make them very interesting, especially if you are just starting to live with a cat, because you don't know what their preferences are and they are usually much cheaper. They are also an ideal solution for very young kittens who have not yet fully understood how to use the litter box or where they have to do their poop. Well, once they start to see it, they know that they can get in there easily because it only requires a small jump, and they can also get out wherever they want because they have no walls. In fact, they are one of the options that we have to consider if we have decided to put our cat's litter box inside a piece of furniture where they have access, so that it is less visible, so that there are fewer odors and all that. But the most important disadvantages of these trays are, on the one hand, that when our cats are a bit careless and a bit of a digger, which many cats are when it comes to covering their poop, they end up creating a real mess and you have to spend the whole day sweeping it up. Another very big drawback is that there is no physical barrier to contain the smell inside. And our cats poop smells a lot. So many families, for that reason, discard these trays. Okay, now let's talk about the cutlery. It is perhaps the most common type of litter box among Families that live with cats. Why? Well, because it has countless advantages. The smell is contained much more inside, and this, as I said, is quite an important factor. But it can also be much more comfortable for our cat from the point of view that they can control their entire environment. They only have one entrance and one exit, and so they can do their poop and pee without any other people or other cats that live with them looking at them, which could be uncomfortable. In addition, the litter stays inside much better. But as always, when there are advantages, there are disadvantages. Let's go over them. To begin with, they take up much more space than a tray without a lid. For this reason, in small apartments, it can be difficult to fit them somewhere in the house. In addition, many of them have a hinged door. And this means that some cats that do not know very well how to use this type of door do not want to go in. In many cases, it requires a little prior training. You would have to leave the door open or remove it directly from the litter box for the first few days so that the cat knows that it does its poop inside, and then you can put it in. Another disadvantage is that since it contains odors inside, if you do not clean the litter very frequently, if you do not change it completely every so often and do not clean the plastic of the tray, well, those odors may concentrate inside, and that is why the cat will not want to go in. Well, before, we also talked about how much these with lids cost. They are usually a little more expensive than the open ones. Okay, so these two are the main categories that will give us a bit of an idea of the other types of litter boxes that exist on the market. Let's look at some very interesting ones. Disposable litter boxes. Look, there could be many reasons why you don't want to spend money on a plastic tray. I don't know, maybe because you're traveling and only need it for that moment, or because you're fostering a cat and it's going to be in your house for, well, I don't know, a week or a couple of weeks, and you don't want to accumulate another piece of junk. For those cases, litter boxes have been invented that can be thrown away or recycled without generating much waste. They're made of disposable materials. You might say, well, for those cases, I can also use a cardboard box. Well, the problem with cardboard is that when it gets wet, it loses its strength and it can even get holes in it when the cat digs disposable Litter boxes are made of paper pulp, which is a much stronger material that also resists moisture. Disadvantages. Well, the uncovered trays, the smells, the litter mess, and also the fact that you'll need to change it frequently much more than with plastic. So in the long run, if you use it for a cat that lives with you all the time, it's going to be much more expensive. But anyway, it's an interesting alternative that we can consider. Now let's move on to another type of litter box, the vertical access litter box. Well, I'm sure you're familiar with them because they're the ones that the cat uses. They're a hybrid right between the uncovered and the covered ones. It's true that they have a lid, but it's also true that there's a very large hole in the lid. So I don't know if we can consider them completely covered. The lid does contain odors, but not as much as a completely closed litter box. But the main advantage is that the walls are so high, so high that practically nothing comes out, only what the cat gets out with its paws. In addition, since the access is vertical, it can be placed better in narrow spaces. The cat arrives, jumps and enters. It does not need an access with a door. The another advantage may come in homes where cats and dogs live. Sometimes dogs are a bit fond of either using the cat's litter box or digging in that litter box and looking for their poop to even eat it. With this type of litter box, we are going to make all that difficult, such as a dog getting inside. If you have a door, the dog puts its head in and digs with its head. If it does not have a door and is covered on top, the dog cannot reach it unless it lays it down, of course. However, this is not a model that you can choose if your cat is, for example, very old, has sore legs, has arthritis, or some mobility problem, because who knows, it may be missing a leg or has had a spinal injury. These cats may not be able to go inside to do their business. Litter box with grid. Let's see. You see it like this in the store and you say this is a normal litter box. However, it is not like that. This type of litter box consists of two trays and a third with a grid. You put the litter or sand in the tray with the grid and leave it assembled like that. When you have to clean it, separate the two trays and use the grid tray to act as a sieve with all the sand falling into one of the trays and only the part that has clumped together the poop and the pee remaining on top. The main advantages of this litter box are above all how easy it is to clean. It is true that in order for it to work well, you have to use litter that meets a series of characteristics such as fine litter so that it passes through the sieve, or clumping litter so that the pee forms balls and is retained. Self cleaning or automatic litter box. Oh, I have mixed feelings about. This litter box has features that make it very different. Why? Well, because it cleans itself automatically every time the cat uses it. In the past, I almost never recommended this type of litter box because it could be activated, even if unintentionally or accidentally when the cat was inside. That probably wouldn't cause any kind of physical problem for the cat, but it could cause an emotional problem, if you'll allow me. Because the cat could get scared of the litter box and then refuse to use it. I think most of these problems have now been solved because they now incorporate systems that detect if the cat is inside and then don't activate. And when the cat has left, they don't activate until 30 or 40 seconds have passed to make sure the cat is not around. The huge advantage of these litter boxes is that they practically reduce the smell of your cat's poop to zero because they are constantly cleaning themselves. But of course, now there are also drawbacks. First of all, there's the price. These litter boxes are always are almost always over €300 and some can cost up to €500 or €600. So they are not affordable for everyone. But also, if you live in a small apartment, they may not fit in your home because they are huge. Another thing is that they need electricity to work. That must also be taken into account. Another thing I don't like is that these types of litter boxes are increasingly being seen as a Netflix subscription rather than a cat litter box. And I'll explain why. Some brands have started to include a series of extras, such as having to pay for the application to work with the litter box, or having to buy specific bags for that type of litter box to collect the waste. So in the end, they are ensuring that you always have to pay to pick up your cat's poop. Of course, this does not happen with all litter boxes. In fact, some even include an air freshener that is released when your cat has left the litter box. In those cases, I would sincerely recommend that you don't use that function. But hey, at the end of the day, they are Quite an interesting solution. They help us keep our cat's litter box clean for much longer and, well, you can consider it if your budget allows it. Convertible litter BOX these litter boxes are quite modern, I'm not going to lie to you. In fact, I think they have emerged from a certain trend that has come from Asian stores such as AliExpress or Temu. Convertible litter boxes are plastic litter trays that are flexible at their edges. So you can use them with either high edges or completely low edges. And you might say, well, is that an advantage? Well, it could be an advantage. If, for example, our cat gets older and, as I said, has difficulty moving, it will make it easier for them to continue using the same litter box. However, it doesn't seem to me that you're going to get much further with these litter boxes to begin with, because the flexible walls are made of rubber that over time can deteriorate much more easily than a completely plastic tray. And you may end up having to change it. And to continue, because I would only fold the litter box in very, very few cases related to the health of our cat and also in the case in which we travel. So if you are not going to use this litter box to go to your vacation home with your cat and take it with you, or your cat is not very old, I do not see any benefit in it compared to other open trays. Litter BOX for older CATS we think that our feline companions are going to stay eternally young and will always be very, very agile. But there comes a point or moment when, well, there are some situations that prevent them from being able to pass through certain heights. If your litter box is very high or is even a vertical litter box, as I said before, your cat may stop using it. For these cases, litter boxes with a very low edge have been invented. There are some that reach practically at ground level so that our feline companion, even if he is very old and cannot move, can continue using it. So in these cases, although it is true that they have all the disadvantages of an open litter box, since we have to prioritize the well being and health of our cat, I consider it a very, very interesting option. And if your cat needs it, we must do everything for the well being of our feline companions, especially in these last stages of their life. Corner LITTER BOX well, it seems that I am making a kind of proverb, but believe me, there are some trays that fit very well into the corners of your home. I have left these trays with the big ones that you fall for last because they have a slightly strange shape, and it is possible that they will catch your attention if you see them. The truth is that these trays have that shape inherited from the area where rabbits, for example, usually defecate in their cages, which fits very well into the corner of the cage, and therefore, well, there was no space. So I suppose there was an enlightened person who said, hey, why don't I move this to my cat's litter box that is always rolling around? And I live in a very small house, and that's probably how the corner litter box came about. And if not, well, I invented it myself and it turned out very nice. You can find these types of trays both covered and uncovered, and as you can see, they fit very well into an unused corner of your house. Well, then everything is perfect. We can use it in a small house. Wait, wait, because now come a few of the disadvantages. Apart from the disadvantages of being covered or uncovered, which I've already mentioned, it is possible that this litter tray is a little small for your cat. When looking for a litter box for our feline companion, the most important thing is that it can be used comfortably and that it allows them to get in, dig well, cover their belongings, and be able to turn around. So sometimes these trays, as they try to minimize the space they take up, are too small for our cats. So if you live with a cat that is more or less small, that weighs, I don't know, 3kg or so and is already an adult, perhaps you can consider it. But with a big cat, for example, like the kociofo, weighing 5kg, are cats that even weigh more. It is an option that, in principle, I would rule out once I've finished with the big cat.
I said big cat, I didn't say fat cat. Right, kitty? Well, now I'm going to tell you a little about my preferences and a little bit about my ranking of all these types of trays. At number nine, I'm going to put disposable litter boxes. For me, they're great, they're interesting, but if your cat always lives with you, they don't make sense. At number eight, the convertible litter box. The truth is that this seems like a marketing idea to me, but in the long run, it won't be very practical either. We continue with the corner litter box. Hey, I definitely wouldn't use it for the cat. At number six, the regular open tray, we've used it. My house looked like the Sahara desert, full of sand all day long in the floor. Seriously, you had to spend all day vacuuming. Now, the automatic litter box is going to be on my ranking. Why? Well, because of my situation as a poor person, I can't afford it. So I'm putting it down here at number four. I'm going to leave the litter box for geriatric cats. Not for any reason, but because we don't have to use it at the moment. So we'll leave it there as a good option, but maybe nothing more in the future. At number three, the bronze medal, the litter box with grid. Hey, I think it's very convenient for cleaning the litter. It's not my main preference because all the sand comes out when you get to know the litter box, but there it is. At number two, the silver medal is the vertical access litter box. This one may have surprised you because it's the one we use with a litter box, but it's true that although I like its features, we basically chose it because it was the one that would fit best in the space we could dedicate to it here at home. And at number one, which is the one I have left out, is the covered litter box, the normal one, the one with side access, the one with a door. Well, for me it's the most complete. Of course, it does require you to be very methodical with cleaning the tray and the sand so that the cat continues to use it. And that's it for a bit. Of all the types of litter boxes and what my preferences are, if you've noticed, I've left out a way of doing our cats poop that has also become very fashionable, which is having them do it in the litter box. Well, I've already talked about this topic in a specific video on the channel that I've linked below, as well as a bunch of videos on how to keep the litter box clean and also the types of litter we have. Well, now it's your turn to tell me what types of litter boxes you've tried with your cats. Did you know that there were all these different types? Hey, tell me in the comments too. And by the way, if you liked the video, give us a like, show us some love. Share it with everyone and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. If you want to support us a lot and fight against the algorithm, give us a super thank you. And remember that we have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Check it out. Before we go, let's meet Uru and Myu here, greeting us with their human companion, Angelica from Medellin, Colombia. This Beauty is called Celeste, and she greets us from Santiago Chilly with her human companions Susanna and Angelo. And I don't want to say goodbye without you meeting Ulysses. Who is this precious little guy who lives with Clara? Kitty, I'm saying goodbye to these people. Kitty, thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And here with Sleeping Artichoke. I'll say goodbye until the next video, but kisses. You have to watch this video because you're going to flip out, because I assure you, it's going to impress you. How are you, artichoke? We're ready to record today.
Dale, criticize me later. People, really, people want to see you with this little white belly, these little white paws, and these cute little kitty choruses. That's why today I've decided. That's why now that I've caught your attention, I've decided to make this video for you so that you know and you don't know very well how to solve this situation. And so that you also know if you've made the right choice with your feline companion. And so that you also know. So that you know. So that you know. And so that you also know if you've made the right choice. The first part. Sure. So you know if you've made the right choice, so you know the pros and cons. And also so you know if you've made the right choice with your feline companion. I know.
Do you like it in the sentences? Well, here I had put a sort of mini introduction of three important things about the litter box. Never put it in a walkway and remember to clean it. Okay? Okay. Don't complicate my life. And stop. Because otherwise the video starts at minute seven and it's a real pain. I don't make boring videos, Kitty. Do I? And also, don't use that sexist word. It's true. It's boring. Boring, though. Not that either. Oh, my gosh, this cat is runny.
Huh?
It's running between my legs. Well, then everything's perfect.
Great.
Pistachio. Okay. On top of that, because the part that has clumped together the poop and the pee. Not the pee.
