Trucos para reforzar el VÍNCULO con tu GATO y que se sienta MÁS SEGURO contigo y con MENOS ESTRÉS

Carlos, a clinical veterinarian, shares exercises to strengthen your bond with your cat and lower its stress. He explains how cats build security and trust, and what you can do differently to make your cat feel safer around you.
Today I'm here to tell you, using scientific data, how strong your bond with your cat is. And you'll be able to see it for yourself at home. Hi, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Sometimes I get really annoying and tell you, in many videos, don't scold your cat because that weakens your bond, that it will make your relationship worse. And that's because the bond that cats establish with humans is very important because it helps them feel safe. In fact, according to some studies, we have underestimated the power that this bond has on your cat's well being. And to establish that bond with its family. The social intelligence of our feline companion is very important. And what is this bond of emotional social intelligence? If all my cat wants is for me to feed it. But bonds are very important because they help a lot to control stress. And now we're going to see why. But at the end of the video, you'll also see how you can assess your cat's level of emotional intelligence and therefore their ability to bond with you. And you'll also learn how to improve your relationship. All of this in your home as a tutorial. The bond that unites a cat with its human family is very important. For example, in environments that are a bit hostile, where the cat doesn't know how to behave. And then if its relationship with its human and its human being present at that moment is good enough, that can help to greatly alleviate stress and how the cat feels out of place. Because if it sees that its human is behaving in a relaxed, friendly way and it truly trusts its family, it can make the cat feel much more comfortable. But this only happens if the cat truly trusts the person in front of it. If not, it doesn't happen. Otherwise, the cat continues to show a lot of stress. And that's why it's so important for your cat to feel safe with you. In fact, up to 65% of cats show this relationship of trust. If we compare it, for example, with people or babies, it is practically the same percentage, even more than dogs. Dogs have around 58%. In other words, cats have a closer relationship with human families than dogs do. Although at first glance, man's best friend is the dog, and you may think the opposite is true. If your cat has a relationship of trust with you, it is easier for them to be much more relaxed in situations such as at the vet. And this will also affect them less when you have to take them to get a vaccine or to see them in the office. And this can also be extrapolated to other situations, such as when you take them in the car, for example. This can greatly influence whether many people come to visit us at home or whatever. That will also help him to be calmer and more relaxed in his environment, even if other humans come to his home to take care of it. And this has ramifications for any type of cat behavior, because that trust he has with you and in his environment can also help. For example, when introducing a new cat to our home, all of this is always related to everything that is going to happen in the environment that you and your cat share, so that any type of situation that may arise in your life will affect him less. For example, we always talk about catifying the environment, but in order to cat ify the environment, we are meeting its needs, and so that the cat understands that we are giving it everything it needs. And do you think that all of this also helps to prevent so many problems with cats that bite and all that type of thing from occurring? In general, all of this has to do with the cat's behavior, because if, for example, we have a cat that has some type of aggression due to stress, if the stress in our home is very high for the cat, it could also have to do with us, because we are not fostering that relationship of trust or that environment in which the cat feels comfortable. If, for example, when it does something that we dislike, we start yelling at it and shouting at it, that will end up weakening the bond. And now we can be a little more specific about what that bond is and why it is so important. Because if you yell at your cat, it will not feel calm and safe in your presence and will only be thinking, oh, my goodness, here comes this guy. Let's see if he starts yelling at me like a madman again, even when you approach it, it will act like I don't know what his intentions are. Okay? And with all this, I want to make you see the importance of having a good relationship, of having a bond of security, of trust between you and your cat. And right now you're saying, oh, my God, I don't know if I have a good bond with my cat and if my cat feels safe in my presence or not. But anyway, for that, we're going to see now how you can evaluate what type of bond you have with your cat and how you can help reinforce those aspects that are positive and that help it feel much safer in your presence. These are four super easy exercises. Well, they may even seem a Little silly to you, but they really, really help you understand your cat better. You have to do all these exercises in a calm and relaxed environment. And when your cat is calm, not when your cat is jumping around your house at 9:30 at night. Because then the language your cat expresses may not fit what we are looking for because it is preoccupied with other things. The first one is to find out if your cat knows its name. It may seem a bit silly, but it's very important. How are we going to find out? Well, when your cat is calm and relaxed, as I just told you, you have to say four words that are more or less the same length as your cat's name or that sound more or less similar. For example, in the case of milu, it's two syllables. We'll say, for example, pitu, rilu, situ, and then we'll say milu. Wait 15 seconds for each of the words. You have to pay close attention to your cat's behavior at that moment. If, when you say any other type of word, the cat ignores you a little, perfect. But if when you say its name, for example, the cat turns its head, twitches its ears, and so on, you'll see that the cat is paying more attention to its name and therefore knows how to recognize it. Cats with shorter names will do better at this exercise. For example, in the case of Totoro, it would be a little harder for him to recognize his name, because having more syllables makes it more likely that the cat won't understand them well. For example, my cat Snowflake was called Snowflake, but when we referred to him and he recognized his name, we always called him Snowflake, and he would pet you. Snowflake can say meow. If your cat recognizes his name, it's easier for you to train him, for example, or to give him some kind of order, or to say come, and your cat will come and then pet him, and that will strengthen your bond. And if he doesn't recognize a name, you have to work on that a little. So, for example, you can start using positive reinforcement every time you say his name so that he knows that it is related to something you want him to do. The most classic example is to start telling him his name and occasionally give him a little treat so that he sees that there is some kind of reward for it. Second exercise, find out if your cat is connected to your emotions and how connected it is to them. It is true that I have taken all these exercises from a scientific journal, which I will also leave the link to in the description Box below, and which, in this case, really caught my attention. They recommended that you be in a quiet room with your cat and that you put one of these robot vacuum cleaners like the rumba, on at that moment. That noise is likely to disconcert the cat at first. But if it sees that you relate to the rumba in a more or less friendly way, even that you say words of affection or attention to it, or you approach it, and that absolutely nothing happens, then you will be able to see if your cat is well or poorly connected to the way you feel at all times. And if you do not have a rumba at home, you can try it with any toy or anything that moves and makes noise and, well, that catches the cat's attention, or that the cat might say, hey, what the heck is that? In this exercise, I want to warn you that it is normal for your cat to react with a little fear at first and even want to move away. But if you see that little by little the cat is tuning in, so to speak, to your way of life, to your mood, and that it wants to get closer, it begins to gain a little trust, and so on. It means that your cat has a very strong bond of security with you because it sees that you are by its side and that this strange creature moving around does nothing to you, and that is why it wants to come closer to see it, because it already sees that it is something harmless. It feels protected and safe by your side. And this exercise is very important because it helps you see if your cat is going to behave in a calm and peaceful way by your side in any other type of situation, even though they may be startled at first. For example, if you are happy at the vet's, you are talking to the cat, you are talking to the vet, and your cat sees that you are behaving normally. If your cat has a strong and important connection with you, it is more likely that the situation will affect it less and that it will be much calmer. And if you see that your cat, despite all this, continues to get very nervous, then you have to work on that relationship of trust. And to do this, you can continue using that toy or that vacuum cleaner, the rumba, and, for example, reward your cat when it is next to the toy or the device or close by and is calm and you are there as if to say, see? Nothing is happening. How calm. I am here to defend you if for whatever reason, things get out of control. Third exercise. How independent is your cat? What degree of independence does it have with respect to you? How do you do it? In a calm room, it will be you and your cat, and you're going to be, for example, on your phone, on your computer, reading a book, and you're going to ignore your cat for about two minutes. It doesn't matter what comes near you or anything else. You can't give it any kind of look, caress or word, nothing. After those two minutes, you're going to call your cat to come to you, and you're going to see if it responds, if it looks at you, if it approaches, if now that you're ready to welcome it, if it wants to stick to you, if it wants to come with you. Obviously, this is going to be somewhat related to your cat's behavior or personality. And this is important because if your cat wants to get much closer to you, is much more sociable with you, it's more likely that it will end up developing a secure relationship with you. And if your cat doesn't want to get too close to you, well, you can also work on that aspect with your cat without intimidating it. Because there are some cats that are more independent than others. You will have to try to make him want to approach you because he feels safe and that he is, for example, rewarded with your caresses or with a treat, etc. This type of more social behavior can be learned, and there are cats that are more prone to it than others. In fact, there are feline companions. If there is more than one cat living at home, that can help other cats that are more asocial end up being much more social and getting much closer to humans. I have already talked about this in the video about whether it is better to have two cats or one living together at home. And it is bad for one cat to be independent or more independent than another. In principle, it is neither bad nor good. Cats have their own cat like nature. But it is true that cats that are more independent can feel more stress in certain situations because they do not have that secure relationship with their human. And then they will feel much more unprotected, protected, because, so to speak, they depend only on themselves to manage all that stress. They do not have that conviction that the human who lives with them can protect them. That's why you should be much more aware of all those situations that can cause stress in cats that live with you and are more independent. For example, pay more attention in these cases to cat proofing their environment or be careful to put pheromones in your house. If you foresee that there will be some type of situation that could cause stress to your cat. And the fourth exercise? You have to know if your cat likes its toys, its treats, or you more. How are you going to evaluate it? Well, on the one hand, put toys on the floor, toys that it really likes. You know that you see that it plays with a lot. You can also put treats and sit on the floor yourself. And you have to see where your cat goes if it goes more towards the toys or towards you, or goes directly to eat the treats. It is true that you have to repeat this exercise several times at different times of the day in different situations, because it can also have an influence if your cat has eaten before, and so on. Let's see if it always repeats the same pattern. If your cat prefers to be with its toys or eat its treats, that is a great way to encourage positive behavior or reward it when you are around so that it knows that you are bringing it something good. If it has come much closer to you. That means that your cat is usually much more comfortable with you. And so a caress from you can help it a lot to calm down in stressful situations. This is very important. For example, if your cat has hidden in your house because something has happened, a loud noise or someone has come home that it does not trust, I always tell you not to take it out of its hiding place. But this exercise can help you know how to calm your cat down. For example, by petting it if it has chosen you first, or giving it some food if it has gone for the treats first. In short, this has many applications. It helps you to know much better what your cat is like and how you have to respond to a situation that is stressful for it. Well, how can you interpret the results if your cat always tends to come closer to you to be with you more, for example, to be petted or to come when you call it, this is indicating that it trusts you quite a bit. Obviously, cats that are more social tend to have a much closer bond of trust with their humans. If your cat doesn't do this, don't worry, don't get all worked up. You can try to work a little harder to have a much closer relationship. And that way you can also help it. In all those stressful situations that I've been talking about throughout the video, and this is not a test. It's not necessary for your cat to successfully pass all four tests or two or one yes and one no. Well, anyway, it's just so that you can be a help in all those types of situations that are stressful for it.
And what kind of bond do you have with your cat? Hey, if you do the exercises at home, which I recommend, let me know in the comments what the results were for your cat and if in the end you know that you have a strong bond of trust with him. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already. And remember that here on YouTube we have a second channel called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Go to it and subscribe too. And on both, hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. And today we meet Maruela. She introduces us to her kitten, who is two months old and says that he follows her everywhere when she starts doing her housework. And this calm feline is Nino, who lives with mate Siratsugara. And Lala and Yuna show us that even though the beginnings of relationships are difficult, everything can be solved. Look at them now. How great. Very well done, Beatriz. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video so you can see how complete this channel channel is. And what a good vet I am. I'll have to sell myself.
Why not? Nowadays all the vet does is give vaccinations. He runs them over. Well, that's the problem. People don't know how to understand their cats. And that's where the whole problem of coexistence comes from. Oh, my cat is climbing my legs. Oh, I don't know what your cat is sending you messages, it's just that you don't know how to interpret them. For a small fee. For a small fee we all answer. And normally the cat will recognize better if you say Tito than Fernandido.
