¿Tu perro tiene la BARRIGA GORDA? | ¡Podría estar enfermo! 5 claves para averiguarlo 🐶🤢🌭

Veterinarian Carlos explains how to check your dog's belly for signs of illness. A swollen abdomen can indicate hormonal disorders, heart problems, parasites, or obesity, and knowing what to look for helps you decide when to call the vet.
Maybe your dog isn't fat, he's just a little strong. Hi, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Even though summer has just ended here or is just starting in your area, everyone wants to have a perfect, beautiful body. No, you. You're not wrong. This isn't a TV shopping channel. It's still about Happy Pets and Families. When you come to the doctor's office, it seems like we vets are obsessed with weight. And it's no wonder, because sometimes you bring your dog home looking like a mess. But what I'm going to talk to you about today is not just whether your dog is more or less fat, but whether your dog has started to have a bigger belly, which is not always the same. You may notice that your dog's belly is getting fatter, and you may say, well, that's silly. There's no need for the vet to see him. He's just eating more, period. What you don't know is that sometimes this may be due not only to the dog eating more, but. But also to some illnesses that need to be monitored. But don't panic, because you might find that your dog has gained weight and it becomes a complete drama. Oh, my gosh. Why? What's wrong with him? Is there something wrong with him? Please don't take him away from me. Today we're going to play a game. You're going to be my veterinary assistant, and I'm going to give you the steps you need to follow to examine your dog and more or less find out what's inside his belly. But yes, you're going to be an assistant. In the end, the one who has to tell you what's inside his belly is your vet. And if something worries you, you. You have to go to him so that he can establish a diagnosis and an effective treatment. Are you ready? Well, come on. Put on your vet's pajamas and let's get to it. Well, I've already washed my hands. Now all we have to do is get to work. The first thing you need to do is examine your dog's belly, feel it in all cases, and also pay attention to any behaviors that you may have noticed that he has started to develop or that he is currently exhibiting. That way, we will be able to more or less know what is happening inside his abdomen. There are several types of bellies, and you have to be aware of all of them. If you notice that your dog has a very pendulous belly and only has a belly and is not fat anywhere else. You have to pay close attention to other signs, such as if he has started to drink a lot and pee a lot, if he is always cold, or if he has lost hair in some part of his body. These types of bellies, when you feel them, are soft and do not hurt at all. You only see that when you feel them, they go back in without any problem and the dog does not show any discomfort. In these types of cases, the problem may be due to a disorder in his hormones, such as Cushing's syndrome or hypothyroidism. And that's where your work as an assistant ends. The next thing you need to do is if you've seen this, go to your vet's office because they'll take your dog's blood and do a blood test. Don't worry. These diseases cause your dog's hormones to not be at normal levels, and this imbalance is what's caused them to start drinking a lot or to lose their hair. Normally, with a simple treatment of a few pills a day, they recover without any problems. But your vet will have to tell you about that. I just told you about a belly that's soft and that you can put in like this with your fingers. The one I'm going to tell you about now is as if it were just hanging like this, as if it were full of water. If you touch it like this, it's as if it bounces out like a wave is returning to you. This type of belly the especially if you notice that your dog also gets very tired when exercising, has difficulty breathing or coughs very frequently, may be related to heart problems. I have already talked to you about heart problems in another video and I will leave them here for you. Heart disease is a bit more serious than the previous case that I mentioned because it usually limits the dog's life a bit more. He does not want to go for walks or during very hot weather or intense physical exercise. It may be very difficult for him to breathe and he may even faint. Examining your dog when his belly is swollen in this way can help him a lot because we can catch the disease in time and you can greatly improve his quality of life. What you have to do in these cases is take him to the vet so that he can do the necessary tests and prescribe medication to help him get back to his old self. Okay, let's continue with the examination. The truth is that you are the best companion I could have had, because you know your dog better than anyone else and furthermore, you are doing it very well, you are feeling your dog's belly, but right now what I told you at the beginning doesn't fit in any way. It is neither soft nor full of water, but quite the opposite. It is hard. And you have also noticed that your dog occasionally has diarrhea, or you have even seen unexpected inmates in its poop, such as parasites, many times, especially in small dogs, when the belly is this hard and they also feel a little uncomfortable, and in addition, you are seeing diarrhea. The cause of this increase in the size of its belly may be because your dog has intestinal parasites. What I recommend in these cases is that you follow a good deworming regimen every three months as a preventive measure. Or if you notice that your dog has a very, very fat belly and also has diarrhea, take him to the vet so that he can prescribe the appropriate treatment to cure it. Of course, but as a veterinarian, you need to know that these changes of mention have occurred little by little. But if you've just noticed that your dog's belly is very swollen, hard and painful, and it's happened in a couple of hours, the problem could be much more serious. If, in addition, you, as a good veterinarian, my somewhat improvised veterinarian, notice that your dog is restless, doesn't want to lie down, tries to vomit and can't. It could be that we are facing a very serious problem that needs to be treated in the emergency room. In some cases, this is caused by the dilation and torsion of their stomach, which is a disease that usually occurs in large dogs and that has to be treated urgently. It can happen day or night at any time, because whether or not your dog's life survives will depend on it. By paying attention to these details and acting quickly, you can do a lot for your dog. And yes, I know obesity can also cause your dog to have a fatter belly. I left it out, but in a conscious way. This is the most obvious and the one that everyone knows. Because although obesity is very important for the health of pets and is one of the most common diseases, the others can often be mask because people think that their dog is simply a little chubby because they give him a little more food. When it comes to obesity, you have a lot of responsibility, because if you overfill your dog's food, most of the time it's because you overfill your dog's bowl, or you feed them more than they should, or there's someone in your family who slips them a treat or something to snack on. Between meals. It's also very important to prevent obesity for animals to get plenty of exercise. And if you don't take them out enough for walks in the park, to run after a ball, or even to swim at the beach. If you live in a coastal area and they let you, you could be making your dog gain weight because they simply eat too much or don't move around much. Okay, how do people know if they've gained weight or if the above has happened to them? Because normally with obesity, what you'll see is that your dog is fatter in all parts, that their neck is also fatter, that there's more meat on their legs. It's what my grandmother used to tell me about wide bones. You'll notice that the belly is also soft, hanging down and depressible, meaning that it can be easily tucked in. But you'll also notice that there's more meat in other areas. And you'll notice, for example, around the neck, which is a very classic area where they start to accumulate a lot of fat. Or you'll also notice that the back looks wider. These are very classic signs that your dog is obese. And it's time to take action. To recognize that your dog is a little. What you have to do is feel him a little here in the rib area to see if you can feel his ribs when you touch him. Or you can also feel him around his back to see if you can feel the lumps on his spine. If that has disappeared and your dog also has a belly, then we're almost certainly talking about an obesity problem. When your dog is obese, the first thing you need to do is examine your conscience and find out if there are any of the things I just mentioned that are going wrong, whether it's in his food, someone giving him too much, or him running less. Because if one of these things is going wrong, it could be the reason why he's gained a few pounds. In my experience, normally reducing the amount of food he's given or not giving him any, when you're cooking and he's acting like a pest under your wing, asking you for food, going for a little more run in the park, throwing him a ball so he'll bring it back to you, and getting him to exercise a little more, any of these things can be enough for your dog to lose a few extra pounds. But if you really don't know why it's happening, for you feel completely lost, disoriented by the world, and you don't know how you can help your dog, you need to go to the vet so that they can put them on a strict weight loss diet and explain the dietary guidelines that you need to follow so that your dog can lose weight. But one very important thing about obesity is that having a few extra pounds is not synonymous with health. What's more, it can have a very negative impact on your dog's health, especially if it also has back problems or joint problems, such as osteoarthritis, because having to carry that heavy backpack all day every time they have to go outside and go to the park or simply want to move from their bed has a very negative impact on those areas. Ah, what a bugger. Get out. Get out. How scary. Well, I applaud you because you've done very well as a veterinary assistant. As you can see, your dog having a little more abdominal contour can mean many more things than just putting on a little weight. However, what I have to tell you is that even though you have examined your dog, this does not mean that you have made a diagnosis of your pet or that you know exactly what is wrong with it. Here, all I have given you are some small tools because it is great for you to know what the consistency of your dog's belly should be like. But in the end, the one who will determine if there is any type of problem is your vet to whom you should take your dog. Because even I, even if you send me a photo of your dog's belly, will not be able to tell you if there is a problem or what its origin is. And of course, never, never, never self medicate your dog. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already, because if you don't, I'm capable of binging on chocolates so that my belly grows too. And you pay a little attention to me. And why do people care about that? Well, because if they pay attention to their dog's belly, they might pay attention to mine too. And the truth is that it's also because I feel like binging on chocolate. Remember to hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. And that way you never miss anything. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel, and we'll see you in the next video. And now let's move on to the question of the week. In the video about why cats purr, Sylvia Maida told us her story and said that she had four dogs at home, who lived with nine cats, all rescued. She lives in a house with a garden, so the cats and dogs go in and out of the garden freely. And she says that her dogs compulsively eat the cat's poop. If your dog is well nourished because it eats home cooked food or kibble and is completely well fed, the fact that it eats another animal's poop is to get your attention, because most of the time when it is eating its own poop, you quickly tell it, don't eat that or pay it a little attention, which is what the dog is demanding. What I recommend is that you clean up your cat's poop very quickly from your garden to prevent it from being exposed to the dogs there. And if at any time, for whatever reason, you have forgotten some poop and your dog goes and eats it, do not scold it too quickly because it is precisely what it is demanding your attention. It is better to ignore the fact and not make a big deal out of it. That way, little by little, they will lose this habit because they will see that they are not achieving their goal, which is to get your attention. Thank you very much, Silvia, for your question, because it is very interesting. Many people ask me about it in my practice. If you want your comments to appear at the end of the videos in the Question of the Week, what you have to do is leave them below in any of our videos and we will select one to put in this section until next week. Were you recording me? Yes. No, please.
