The difference between being influential & being an influencer
4 Nov 2025 · 14 min
Casey Adams explains why influence means changing how people act, not just how many followers you have. He broke his neck at 15, spent six months in a brace, and credits that setback with teaching him to influence himself first. His goal: fill Staples Center with 24,000 people for a business event.

That is all I ask of you because we don't run ads here. So moving into the show over the past four days, I've been in Los Angeles and I want to talk to you guys what I've been doing and I just want to give you an update about what is happening in my life. So in terms of the podcast, I have some phenomenal interviews coming out soon. While I was in la, I sat down with three extraordinary people, one of them being Ben Nemton, who is the founder of the Buried Life, which is a MTV show that is pretty much the OG yes theory. He created this theory of he wanted to write down a list of 100 of his goals and and fulfill them with his friends and Ben Nemton. I had the chance to sit down with him and he goes over how he went from playing basketball with President Obama to going across the country in a bus and fulfilling other people's dreams. So stay tuned for that. Also, I sat down with Trevor Moad, who was ranked Sports Illustrated Number 1 Brain Trainer of the year in terms of helping top athletes master their craft. So stay tuned for that. And then I sat down with Kevyon Sturvident and we talked about real estate, how he's doing almost a billion dollars in real estate this year and how he went from just selling houses in the hood to selling houses all the way up to $35 million per house. So I'm excited. I was in LA not only for interviews, but scheduling the next build you'd Empire Young and reckless event with drama. Yes, you heard that right. If you are a listener to this show and you've been listening for a while. You know that my company, Build you'd Empire, recently did an event with Young and Reckless, which is owned by my buddy Chris Drama Pfaff. And we did an event in LA back in May and it was phenomenal. We had people like Robert Greene there, we had people like Paul Rodriguez, Mikey Taylor, so many world class entrepreneurs and a lot of them have been on this podcast, including Dan Fleshman and Chase Hero and the guys from Iconic and much, much more. But I was in LA and we're scheduling the next event. I'm not gonna give you details yet, but the one thing I will say is it will be in October, so make sure you stay tuned for that. And yeah, all I'm saying is be ready because you are not ready for what's coming when it comes to this next event. And you heard it first. This is the first time I talked about it publicly. And yeah, if you go on my Instagram, you can see I posted a picture with Drama and we're plotting. So just know. And that's what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about something very important and that is actually getting things done. We all live in this social media world, especially us young individuals who have been growing up with social media since 13 years old. That, that's when I got on. At least I'm 19 years old now, so six years. And the past three years I've used social media as a business tool to connect me with world class people and it's overall opened up every single door for me. That's why I live in Arizona, that's why I have an online business. That's why I've been able to travel all around the world speaking on stages. That's why I've been able to build a personal brand. It's social media and leveraging it correctly that has opened up the these doors. But I want you to understand there's a big difference between having a brand and being an influencer than actually being influential. And me and Drama talked about this because I believe you need to very much so focus on this. And huge shout out to my buddy Charlie Jaboli for instilling this belief in me. He said, there's a big difference between being an influencer and being influential. And what I mean by that is this is what I mean, this is how I look at it. There are so many influencers out there that may have millions of followers, but we've all seen the headlines of someone with 2 million followers can't sell 20 t shirts. And then you start to think, what is the purpose of having followers if you cannot influence them to do something? Whether that's them buying a product or doing something different in their life, maybe it's getting better habits. Whatever it is, no matter what it is, being influential means truly impacting people. And for me, I want to influence you to get up and go to events, to get up and network, to build a brand, but focus on the relationships in the back end. Because I don't want to be an influencer. I want to be influential. There's a big difference. And I want you to think about this in your life. How are you being influential to your team, to your family, to your community, and most importantly, to yourself? Because we first must influence ourselves if we want to influence others. And if you're not focusing on becoming the best version of yourself, how do you expect to influence other people to do so? It's very important that you think like that and it's very important that you take something away from today in whatever way you'd like. I'm not giving you just things to do. I'm giving you my opinion from what I've learned from so many world class people, and that is focus on being influential. When I have events like the last one we had in la, hundreds of people flew out from all over the United States and all over the world. We had people from Germany and Canada and different parts of the world flying to la, booking hotels, being at our venue at a certain time, and most importantly, sitting down and taking notes and, and learning from entrepreneurs who have been there and done that before. And think about that, that is influence. That is being influential. If you are influencing people to spend money on a product or service, to be in a certain location to learn from others, to take notes, I consider that being influential. And that's what I want to do. One of my goals and I want to put this out there into the universe is to sell out Staples Center. Yes, you heard that right. 24,000 seats for a business event. With Build you'd Empire and Young and Reckless, you may be thinking, yo, that's not possible. And if that's you, you should probably stop listening to this podcast. Because I want to help you and I want you to help me. Being influential is moving people. Being influential is changing people's habits and routines. Being. Being influential is creating a shift. And when I say a shift, I'm not saying you shift someone to follow you. I'm saying you're shifting them and you're shifting their Actions. You're shifting how they think, you're shifting what they do, you're shifting how they feel. If you wanna be influential, you need to be of influence to others. And that starts by being selfless. You need to be in it to provide value to others. There's so many people on social media caught up their ego and caught up in thinking, hey, look at me, look at me. And that's not going to work. And that will not make you influential. And I'm not saying I am. I'm working every single day to influence others, to influence myself, to become the best version of themselves. And this podcast is living proof of it. And that's the truth. I'm not sitting down with all these entrepreneurs to just benefit me. I'm doing it to benefit you. Whether it's one of you or 100 of you or 10,000 of you. We've had hundreds and thousands of people listen to this podcast and I know every single person I sit down with is influential to you. They're influential to me. And there will be a butterfly effect that maybe you're listening right now and you slightly change your life. Maybe you come to one of my future events and you meet someone that becomes your business partner. It's the little things in life that you don't expect to happen that will truly change your life, period. I've seen it happen for myself. I remember I was a 16 year old entrepreneur or 16 year old athlete, excuse me, and I had no intentions to build a personal brand and start an online business and travel all over the U.S. and most importantly, I had no intention to become a speaker. But at 15 years old, while playing football, I got diagnosed with interspinase ligament damage and put into a neck brace for six months. That was one of the most unexpected things in my life that happened, but it caused so much drastic change. You know, sitting in a neck brace for six months isn't something that all of us do. And maybe it's different for you. Maybe you had the six months in your life where everything was just going wrong. Maybe a loss of a family member, maybe you got fired from your job. Whatever it is just a negative point in your life that was unexpected based on my experience, led to the most change because I had to physically change my actions and routines. I was laying in my bed for six months, not even able to just do what I used to do, which was play sports and hang out with my friends and go do what I wanted to do at 15 years old. And then I found personal development. I started Reading more I started learning from successful entrepreneurs and I found a niche that I wanted to dive into so hard. And I fully committed to influencing myself first. And I want this to be one of the biggest takeaways today because this is gonna be a short podcast. Before you become influential, you must influence yourself. Think about that. Before you influence others, you must influence yourself. Before I had an event, I interviewed dozens of world class entrepreneurs. Before having an event, I went to dozens of other events. You must influence yourself in a certain way if you want to influence others in that same way. It's like if you want to listen to someone that says, hey, it's time to get in shape, but they're not in shape and they're eating desserts and they're not hitting their workouts, they're not influencing themselves. So therefore, how are they going to influence you, period? You know, we see people in the gym that are ripped and they influence us. Maybe we look at them and we're like, wow, maybe I could look like that one day. The truth is they're influencing you because they influence themselves first. And I want you to leave with this today because I want to wrap this up. There's nothing more to say. There's a fine line between being an influencer and being influential. And I want to quote my man Charlie Jabli for that because he instilled this into me. If you want to be influential, influence yourself first. Think about something today. Where do you want to get better in your life? What do you want to change? Whatever it is, you must influence yourself and change your habits to make that happen. And I need you to write this down. How do I want to influence others? Because before you do that, you have to influence yourself that way, period. So walk away with that. How do you want to influence others? How do you want to influence yourself? Because they both must align. And true alignment is when you find fulfillment. So that being said, I'm done here. You need to write that down. You need to stay focused. You need to become influential. And I'm not saying you must. This is my opinion, But I'm telling you, don't get caught up in being an influencer. Be influential in whatever you do. And if you do that, you'll be one step closer to rising, to building your brand, to impacting people. And I'm on my journey and I hope you are as well.
