5 things I learned my first week in Clubhouse!

Camille D. Jamerson shares five strategies for using Clubhouse as a networking tool: find your people through search and groups, network across generations and industries, decide your role (moderator, listener, connector), set concrete goals like new contacts and follow-ups, and attend rooms that match your interests.

Hey everybody out there, this is Camille D. Jamerson, better known as the Mogul Maker from CDJ Associates and the Camille Company. I am jumping on for a few minutes for a Mogul Minute to talk to my Android users who just got admitted to Clubhouse. And, um, if you're like me, you jumped in headfirst And, um, you might feel— might feel some kind of way about that, you know, like, what is this? What am I doing? And is this for me? Well, this was my first week, so I'm gonna lose my little party hat soon or whatever. But, um, in this week I've really learned a lot, and I wanted to share with you kind of my takeaways and hopefully Um, if you've kind of felt like the way I did, um, these 5 things will kind of help you get your arms around Clubhouse and, um, how to navigate, um, that space. Now this isn't a how to use Clubhouse, this is, um, what I've learned from using Clubhouse and how I have learned to I use the, the app for my benefit. Makes sense? Okay, so here we go. Number 1. Number 1 is find your people. Find your people. What do I mean by that? When I first got on, I was just overrun. Notwithstanding the person that invited me, um, she's my peer, but outside of that, I was just overrun with millennials everywhere. I mean, it was just nothing but millennials. And I have absolutely nothing against millennials. I've birthed a few amazing millennials, by the way. Um, but that's not my space, right? That's not my space, and that's not my target market audience. So I'm like scrolling, scrolling. I'm like, okay, this isn't going to work, right? Um, and I was this close to taking that little, um, app and pressing down on it, hitting that garbage can, and just saying, you know what, I'm good, I'mma just roll where I am. However, I'm so glad that, um, I made the extra effort to find my people, find my tribe. And so once I figured out how to do search I searched not only people, but I was able to search groups. So I found people with common interests. I found people in my age group. I found people who, um, like to golf. I found people who like Marvel. I found people who are going through menopause. I'm not there yet, but I'm like, I need to know you guys so I know what's coming, right? Um, I found people who, um, who have been in business a while, right? Um, not like a newbie startup kind of thing. They've been in business for a minute. Um, they have some C-suite experience. They're like, they're my colleagues, they're like my peers. We have very similar experiences, so I could really relate, um, to them and what they brought to the table. So I'm like, yes, I have found my people, right? Um, so I, I definitely challenge you to do that. Find your folks. Whatever your interests are, whatever your generation is, whatever, um, your industry is, find your people so you can, um, have a comfort level with being a part of something new. Okay, um, because those people probably have some similar interests. And if you know how Clubhouse works, you can look at the groups that they're in and very easily, um, have someone had filtered that out for you so you can figure out what groups you want to be a part of. You can look at the person that referred them, and then look at the person that referred them, and then look at the person that referred them, and have a whole tribe of people, like-minded people, that you can follow. Okay, so, so do that. That's number one. But number two, which is just as important, is don't be afraid to network or reach outside of that circle. It's okay if you're a Gen Xer and you've got folks, um, that you're following or that are following you that are, um, millennials or Gen Zs or boomers, right? Because you can learn or glean from anybody, and you can be a help, um, to anybody. So you don't want to limit yourself to just the people that make you comfortable, right? You don't want to limit yourself to just the industries that you know about. How are you going to learn anything new if you shut yourself off from everything that's new and different? So whereas you definitely want to engage with people that, um, are in your space, that know what you, you know, or know your industry, or subject matter experts, um, in things that you enjoy, you also kind of want to reach out a little bit and find people that are above you or below you, um, in, in age or experience that, um, you can learn from or that you can share with. So don't be afraid to go outside of your normal bubble. That's number 2, okay? Number 3, figure out where you fit. Figure out where you fit. Are you going to be a moderator? Are you going to be someone that just kind of jumps in rooms Are you going to be a co-moderator? Are you going to be a connector, someone that connects people to others that may be of interest? Like if you know someone is looking for a particular venture capitalist, you can connect, connect the dots for people. Is that going to be your role? Figure out kind of what you, you want. From Clubhouse, okay? And you— and don't think you have to do that today if you've just joined, um, like me, um, but keep that in the back of your head. You want to know, um, where you fit in this, where, where your skill sets and your abilities best fit here. If you're somebody who is always on the camera or always on stage or always on lights or always doing videos, then Clubhouse might be your place where you can lay low and kind of glean. You don't always have to be on. That's a word for somebody, okay? Or if that is your thing and you feel you can extend your brand into Clubhouse, then, then you could look to do that, okay? But figure out where you fit so you can make plans towards making Clubhouse work for you. Okay, number— is this 4? 4. Number 4: be intentional. Okay, be intentional. And what do I mean by that? I mean you need to say, okay, I mean, and I approach everything this way, so it may not be for everybody, okay, but I'm very intentional. I'm gonna meet X amount of people off Clubhouse this week. I'm going to follow up on this many Instagram profiles. I'm going to, um, follow this many new people. I'm going to maybe chat with this many people offline or in real life or in an email. Okay, I'm very goal-driven. So, um, if I do that with Clubhouse just starting out, then I believe that, um, I will not only meet my goals, which for me are to expand my network, right, to elevate my brand, and to showcase my subject matter expertise. Okay, so those are my 3 goals. So how I do that is being very intentional about my engagement. On Clubhouse. Okay, so number 5, the very last one, and it's probably gonna seem like a contradiction to all of them, but it's still very important, is have fun. For the love of God, have some fun. Okay, it's okay to drop in to a Clubhouse meeting about Marvel if you're into that. It's okay to learn about wine or to Um, there are some Clubhouse meetings that— meeting groups that just play music. It's okay to drop in those and just enjoy music from all over the world. Have fun, be social, because that's one piece of social media that we don't do so well, and that's the being social part, right? Right. So have fun with Clubhouse, enjoy it. It's brand new for some of us. Um, jump in, get your feet wet, don't be intimidated. Um, like I said, find your people, don't be afraid to go outside of your bubble. Um, figure out where you fit, be intentional, and have some fun. Okay, can y'all do that? And look for me on there. I'm Camille D. Jamerson. You'll see the Mogul Maker. Make certain that you're following me so we can chat. And shout out to the Oversized T-Shirt Company for this amazing Brave shirt. They are Oversized T-Shirt Co on Instagram.
