The truth about multitasking

CDJ argues that multitasking isn't superhuman skill but a series of trade-offs. Every yes to a new project means no to something else: time, attention, relationships, rest. Success requires knowing the hidden cost before you commit.

Hey guys, welcome to your Mogul Moment with CDJ, and today's Mogul Moment is going to be about multitasking. Yes, we're going to talk about multitasking today. Usually you hear that people say that women can effectively multitask, we can do more than one thing at a time. There's some men who are also gifted to be able to manage more than one One Thing at a Time, you hear often about entrepreneurs who are managing more than one business and moguls such as ourselves that have our hands in more than one thing. And that's fine. To be able to do that effectively and successfully is fine. But you also need to deal with the reality of that, which is everything that you are saying yes to, you are in fact simultaneously saying no to something else. So if you're saying yes, I'm going to spend time on building this business right now, you are saying no to time with your husband, your child, seeing your parents, going to a birthday party, laying in bed, whatever an opposite, um, activity would be. You're saying no to that thing because you're saying yes to this. So while you're multitasking, while you're taking on, um, whatever you're taking on, please don't think that you are doing all things equally. There's no such thing. Everything that you are doing is at the cost and sacrifice of something else. Being successful at multitasking means that you have weighed the cost in advance and have prepared for managing that cost prior to getting engaged in whatever it is that you're doing. So prior to taking on a project, one of the things you need to ask yourself is, what is it going to cost me? And I'm not talking about dollars and cents, I'm talking about time, I'm talking about attention, I'm talking about resources, I'm talking about, um, the things that you have to give up in order to do it. So consider those things going forward when you're taking on a new project, a new business, a new hobby. Think about what it's actually going to cost. Prepare for that cost. Weigh if is worth it, and then multitask away. But do it with the knowledge of knowing that you're saying yes to this particular thing at the expense of this particular thing. You are not able to do all things equally successfully all the time. There's no such thing. Stop. Don't even put that type of pressure on yourself. You can do more than one thing at one time, absolutely, but everything can't have your 100% attention. You're only one person and you are a limited resource. I'm gonna say that again. You are a limited resource. Treat yourself as such.
