Day 177: Presence...

Chad Silverstein and a colleague discuss how small signals like phone placement and body position send powerful messages about whether you're actually paying attention. Being present with your team and loved ones means setting aside distractions and genuine curiosity about what they have to say.

I learned early on that your micro messages that you send to your team are seen whether you think they are or not. And the best example I've always used is putting your phone on the desk. You know, when you're with your team.
And you put your phone on your desk and you want to give them.
The feeling that you're giving your team your undivided attention, but then, you know, you pick up the phone and then you put it down, because, no, you're not going to be on your phone. You're with your team. But that message that you send, you know, it's like. Or if you're in a conversation with.
Someone, but your feet are pointing at the door like it's obvious you need to get out of there, you always.
Feel like you're in a rush.
You're always in a hurry.
And anytime you hear people say how.
Busy you are, you're so busy, you're.
Giving people this feeling that you're not present with them and that you've got.
Something better to do and somewhere bigger to be.
And I think, you know, you have.
To be careful about that, because the.
Gift of giving your team not only.
Your attention, but when you're with them, the attention has to be legit, meaning.
That you're not really with them.
If you're not with them, if you're.
Somewhere else in your head, they can pick it up. And just because you're there spending time.
With them does not mean that you're giving them your time.
And I think that's a nuance to.
The whole giving your attention to your.
Team by spending time with them.
And you have to genuinely care and.
Want to kind of build into other people and get to know who they.
Are and be insatia curious. Put your.
Your selfish interests aside, put your next.
Meeting where it needs to be, which is later on, and be wherever you.
Are, with whoever you are, doing whatever you're doing in the moment.
And that's the best gift you can.
Give people, you know, and next to obviously making the time for them.
And I think, again, if you think.
You'Re fooling people while you're on Zoom and you're doing something else on your.
Computer, people can see through it, and.
If they can't, they will.
So you got to be careful about.
Your micro messages, and it applies at home as well, with your kids and your wife and your husband and the.
People that you care most about. You got to be with them and you got to be present with them.
