Day 183: Be you...

Chad Silverstein on why trying to please everyone backfires. He uses the 7, 38, 55 rule to show how people remember your vibe more than your words, and argues that some people will dislike you no matter what, so you might as well be yourself.

Everyone should aim for this to be comfortable just being you in your own skin, being okay with the people that don't like you, being comfortable with the people who challenge you and not reacting to it. This is something I recently am really working on hard, is that I've been doing a great job reacting to situations where I'm not so happy, but because I still wear it, I'm still giving off that impression that they know exactly what I'm thinking. And I was given that feedback recently and it reminded me of the, you know, 7, 38, 55 rule, which is, you know, people aren't going to necessarily remember what you said, but they're going to remember what they saw. And I think, you know, it takes someone who is really strong inside to be able to kind of be calm and cool and calm and collected no matter what situation they're under and no matter what they're faced and challenged with and not care so much. You know, again, I always say my favorite one liner, care, but not that much. You know, like you should care what people think, but not that much that it should change you. Rattle you. And you just gotta be comfortable with who you are. You gotta be able to laugh at yourself, you gotta humble yourself and just be real without having to take yourself too seriously and know that your job's not to get everyone to like you. You can't be a people pleaser. And the fact is, there are some people who like you and they know exactly why they like you. And there's some people who don't like you and they know exactly why they don't like you. And there's some people who like you and they don't even know why. Sometimes you meet someone and you just feel a good vibe from them. You don't even know them and vice versa. Sometimes you meet people right off the bat and they just rub you the wrong way and they haven't even said a word. You know, there's no way to explain that except that that's just the way it is. And everyone has that. And so you're part of that equation in many situations and relationships with people. Embrace it and accept it and don't, don't beat yourself up about it.
