Day 20: Sit, walk, stand...

Chad Silverstein joined the Built to Lead program wanting to slow down, then ruptured his Achilles tendon during an event. The injury forced the reflection he'd asked for, showing how coaching and margin in your schedule clarify what actually matters.

So I first met Chet and became a client with built lead in 2010. And I'll never forget I was meeting with Chet at Northstar, usually where he meets a lot of people for lunch. And he asked me why I wanted to become Built. And I remember telling him, and I still have the notes from this. I said, I just want to slow down. I said, I think too fast, I talk too fast, I walk too fast. I'm trying to get everything done and I'm always in a rush and always in a hurry, and I just want to slow down. I just want to learn how to slow down. And I want to be able to live more of a. Of, you know, purpose driven life, more in the moment. You know, all the good stuff that you'll hear people saying and thinking. And I don't remember much about what was said in that conversation. I remember he sent me the discovery document, and I spent the next 12 hours filling it out. And one week later, I was at an event with ypo. It was a network with a bunch of entrepreneurs, and we were. We were doing some cool event and I was on an obstacle course with my friends and. And I popped my Achilles tendon and snapped it in half. And I went to the hospital and they told me to go home because there's nothing they can do. They said, just come. You have to have surgery next week. And I kind of lost it a little bit thinking about being pretty much incapacitated for the next whatever, couple months. And I had my first built to leave practice that next week after surgery. And Chet walked in and I had my cast on. And we started laughing because I pretty much had asked to slow down. And I was sent a message, I think from above that if you want to slow down, you ask for it and you'll get it. And that certainly was a wake up call for me. I had to slow down in every area of my life until I got one of the little knee scooters. And then I was flying around my office and having a little bit of fun with it. But I did get to work with Chet on slowing down. He made me go real slow. I was excited to start Built to Lead. I wanted him to work with my team. He wouldn't even go near my team. And he didn't let me talk, you know, talk about my opus until I got clear on my core. And you really do have to work deliberately at slowing down. And if you're not good at it like I wasn't, then you need someone who's going to help you. And so finding someone who you can build into and that can build into you, especially in this process. You're lucky if you have a team that you're watching this with or writing this with, or you have people that you know and build to lead or, you know, a builder, or you're working with the builder. But having people who can help slow you down is a really, really powerful tool that people use in their development. And you have to be able to slow down. You have to learn how to be okay not being distracted when you are by yourself. And that's a hard thing to do today, but you got to make time for it. We'll talk about that when we talk about building margin into your. Into your schedule. It's a day later on in the book, but figure out where you need to slow down, where you want to put more time and where you are neglecting slowing down and not giving your time where you think it's important. And it's important to get clear on that so you don't look back and have regrets.
