Day 24: Character...

Chad Silverstein distinguishes reputation, which others decide, from character, which is who you are when no one's watching. He warns against double lives and urges alignment between your stated values and private behavior, especially around phone use, shopping, and food.

Okay, day 24. This day is loaded with just everything. One of my favorite parts in here is how your reputation is what others think of you. That's so powerful, right? Your reputation is so important. Your name is so important. Your credibility is so important, especially in today's world with business and the way we interact with everybody online and the way we try to get clients or work with people and try to monetize whatever it is that we do for our professions. And. And it really doesn't matter what you think of yourself when it comes to your reputation, because you don't really have any control over that. If people are talking about you and you have a reputation out there and it's true or it's not true, okay, so be it. All you can do is focus on you and live in a certain way. And this is really at the heart of who you are, and it's your character. I've said this before, and I just love it. It's a good reminder that, yeah, we live. You know, everybody lives three types of lives. You have your public life that you live at work and when you're out and about. You have your private life when you're at home with your family and loved ones. And you have a secret life behind closed doors. And that's where your character really shows itself, you know, behind closed doors, who are you? What would you do if no one's looking kind of a thing? And that says volumes about who you are. And so you have to ask yourself that, and you have to be vulnerable with yourself, transparent with yourself, and get clear on who that person is, because that really is your true identity at your core. In my worldview, I'm never by myself. I feel like I have a mantra that I kind of live by, which is the recorder is always running, I'm always being watched, and everything's kind of being recorded in a way. And so it is a great way for me to remind myself that I build these guardrails, these fences around myself to protect against myself. Again, we are our own worst enemy, and we sabotage ourselves. And we tend to have a really hard time sometimes resisting an impulse or sometimes dealing with being addicted. You know, people always think that being addicted is always about drugs, and it's not. I'd say almost everyone watching this right now is addicted to their phone, addicted to technology, addicted to something, whether it's shopping or food or you name it, and being honest about that and being clear on where your addictions or where your desires show up in your life and how you act out on them is an important piece of clarity that you need to have. Because if it's not healthy for you, then you need to change something, period. And knowing your character and knowing that it's made up of your belief system, your identity, and your principles and all wrapped up, create your character. And you combine that with, you know, this concept of the secret life that you live. You don't want to catch yourself living a double life where you're one way when you're here and you're another way when you're here. And when you show up with these people, you're here and it's just such a. A hard life to live. You get tired. And it would be so much easier, wouldn't it, if you could just show up and just be you. And it's been something that I've been aiming at for a really long time, and I've gotten a lot better at it, but always a work in progress. Never stop. So who are you? Look back at your identity, your worldview, the principles that you started journaling and you started writing your versions of, and get another rinse down and. And think about your character and think about, at your core, who you are.
