Day 249: Emotions

Chad Silverstein explains how a leader's mood spreads to the team. A smile or doom-and-gloom from the top changes group behavior and performance. Leaders who own their emotional impact and use it purposefully can build trust and chemistry.

Spend a lot of time on this topic. Emotions, there's a reason for it. Emotions move people and they are contagious. Something as simple as a smile on a leader's face can make everyone around them smile. And you have a leader that walks into a meeting, doom and gloom. You completely change the entire vibe of the entire room. And so you have to use this to your advantage. When you lead, knowing this should help you. You have to have the awareness yourself. And then you have to take responsibility that you're having an impact no matter who or where you are. And when you show up. I always use the example of our company. Early on, we used to take people to Florida, our sales annual meeting. We would take everyone to Florida. And, you know, during the day, people would hang out, they hang out by the pool. And whenever the leader would walk up, the whole vibe changes, right? Because the boss is there. And if you're a leader, you just have to accept that that's the gig. This is why it's so lonely being a leader. And we tell people, don't want to lead, run as far away as you can, because it does. You can feel like you're on an island and no one treats you the same and you want to be treated the same. You crave it, but it's just not the gig. If you're in the position of leadership and understanding how your emotions can move your team and using that to your advantage and tapping into that and getting good at using it, I think is powerful and making it genuine. It's gotta be genuine, sincere and authentic. And you have to use it with purpose. And I think the leaders who can do that, they really stand out. They move their teams. Teams want to rally for them. And the fact that it's contagious, especially when it's a positive emotion, putting other people in that mode, it only can help raise the performance, the trust, the chemistry, and everything you're after on a team.
