Day 31: Compass and map...

Chad Silverstein uses a survival exercise to explain how a personal core functions like a compass and map in life. It gives you direction, helps you pivot during major moments like graduation or marriage, and keeps you from drifting. The key is changing how you think, not just your circumstances.

So your homework was, you're lost in the woods, and you get two items. What would you have? So we always do this in practice, and we hear some really funny things, right? And you have to think about, no matter what you put, you know, like, how long would that last you if you remained in the woods, right? So if you thought about something that wouldn't do you much good overnight or if you were able to just use it, but it didn't get you out of the woods, that's not going to help either. So the answer is the compass and the map. And the reason that you have the compass and the map is so you can get the hell out. And this is a great way of looking at our lives. The simplest, dumbest way of understanding it is if you just put two boats in the harbor and you have two captains at the helm, and one's got the compass in the map and one doesn't. You know, the guy with the compass and the map's gonna know where to go. He's gonna get out of the harbor, and he's off. And the guy who has neither the compass or the map probably won't get out of the harbor. And if he does, he's gonna be aimlessly just walking, you know, driving his boat through the ocean. And most people are doing that through life. They're aimlessly kind of doing one thing to the next, because that's what they think they should be doing, because that may be normal and they don't really know where they're going, but they're doing what everyone is supposed to be doing. They, Their paycheck, they're paying their bills, they're taking care of whatever responsibilities they have. Living a life worth living, not so much. And if you stop and think about it, why would you not want to have a compass and map? Your BTL core, your opus. This is your compass and your map. Your. Your. Your map is going to be this. It's going to be this vision of where you're going. You know, you can kind of see it. And even though it's not so clear because it's an ideal, it's you. You're making it up. You may never get accomplished. Doesn't matter. You're moving closer to it. It may change, but you have direction. You've got the map and your compass and how you're going to navigate through life and how you're going to pivot when you're hit with a challenge or an obstacle. You know, this is your core. This is going to be where you Kind of look inward. What do I believe about the situation? How do I want to react? How do I want to show up? All the stuff that we've been talking about up until day 30 all leads to understanding your compass. It's your compass, it's your guide. It's what you're using to navigate through all the things that you experience on a daily basis, all the people you meet and all the things that are coming. We have these kairos moments in life. Sometimes it might be graduating from school, getting married, having kids. It changes everything. And so you got to have real clear principles and you got to know what you believe. Because the next thing you know, your life just changes and it's just going in a different direction. And you need to be able to have that compass. You need to just know that, okay, I'm in a different scenario now because my life just had one of those moments. Everybody has them where it changes and shifts everything. And you know, we're surrounded by change. People hate change. But like, everything changes. Everything changes except the way we think. Unless you change the way you think. So think about that, right? Everything changes. You change your clothes every day, you change where you live, you change the way your hair looks. We change things nonstop, but we don't change the way we think. And that's what we're doing. We're actually getting you to stop and think a little differently. Change the way you think, shift, pivot and get ready. Get ready to use your core and whatever it is you're pursuing and wherever you're going to be navigating through, because you're going to be met with these orange barrels called life. And they're coming if you're already. If you're not already being hit by them. So the compass in the map. Remember that. It's a great exercise to play with. And if you've ever been in built sleep practice, you've been blessed.
