Day 311: Clear, concise, direct...

Chad Silverstein argues leaders should be clear, concise, and direct, speaking to the least sophisticated listener so everyone understands. He describes a coaching technique where people repeat their message multiple times until it becomes tighter, then expand only if listeners ask for more.

CCD is one of my favorite little nuances to build to lead. Clear, concise, direct. The way the leader communicates, the way he speaks, the way she reminds people, the channels of communication, whether they are in person, whether they're online, whether they are recorded, I don't care. Being CCD and speaking to the least sophisticated person in your system so that everybody understands what you're saying. No matter if they're the brand new employee who just started, if they're the teenager in your house, whatever the case is, less is more. Loose lips sinks ships. I've always tried to live that way. And as someone who talks a lot, it's very difficult. But you gotta be able to know when the time is right to be ccd. You gotta just pop it out and say less words. And we embrace this in built sleep practice by having people repeat back what they just said. And it can be frustrating for some people when they are sharing their thoughts and then we have to say say it again and then they do it and then we'll say say it again and they do it again. Usually by the third or fourth time they say it much more CCD without even having to tell them to do it. They can hear themselves. They're just saying these extra words that nobody needs to hear and they're getting their thoughts clear. And a lot of times the first time we say things, it's not ccd. And that's a problem for leaders who are up in front of their company, talking all the time, talking to clients and presentations every day. It's much better to say less and have people wonder what you're thinking than to say more and have them wonder why you're talking. So be clear, concise and direct when you speak, when you write. And remember, less is more. And just adopt that CCD mindset and coach other people around you to be ccd. And when it's required to give more, they'll ask.
