Day 320: You are the message...

Chad Silverstein on why leadership is rare: you have to transform yourself first, convince people to follow your vision, and get comfortable being uncomfortable. You'll have supporters and detractors no matter what.

I think what makes becoming built to Lead so cool is that it really is only for a few. And if you look at the leaders who've actually gone through the build to lead process and they've done amazing things, you can see why there's so few. You can see what they've gone through, what they're willing to, you know, transform from and into. You know, they had to go through a lot, and they did it with so much passion and purpose. You know, that was kind of giving them the energy and the wherewithal to kind of keep going even when they were getting smashed in the face. There's something really attractive about that. And the hardest thing, I think, ever is when you are on that path and you have some sort of vision and you want to win people over with your idea. You want people to see what you can see. And the fact is, the stronger you feel about it, you know, the more hardcore people who don't like your idea will seem to. To feel to you. Because, you know, again, no one's going to feel the way you feel. And there's going to be people maybe who love your idea and who jump on board with you, and they're going to be people who hate your idea. So I think it's just something you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable with. And that could be a really hard thing, especially when people are either close to you or within your team or, you know, above or below you. So I think, you know, you have to be able to know your audience, be careful what you share, when you share it, and you have to also trust only a few.
