Transcript excerpt of a YouTube conversation about the so-called “it factor” in high performers. A head coach with 30 years’ experience argues the ‘it’ factor appears innate — he has never seen someone without it later uncover it at a high level — and characterizes it as an extreme, near-‘psychotic’ desire to win rather than mere enjoyment of training.
Has anyone ever not been it and become it, man?
No.
Wow. What is it?
Well, that's a great question. I'm a head coach now for 30 years. I've never seen someone that didn't have the it factor and then uncovered it at this level.
Wow.
You have to be a psychotic competitor. Like borderline insane or. The desire to attain what you want is so deep. This. It's so deep. There's nothing you wouldn't do to attain it. Like it's crazy, like craziness, like ultimate competitor. Not someone that loves to work out all the time. That's loving working out. I'm talking about loving desire to win. It's to be what God intended you to be, whatever that is. And typically that's going to be something you love.
Would you describe what you are attracted to as that it. Anywhere in life?
Yeah, anywhere in life. The it just. I. I'm in love with my garbage man. I'm in love with. The guy's amazing. This guy's amazing.
