Peter Kunk spent 25 years at Cello Poly before launching Built to Lead with his wife, prompted by a colleague named Chet. He built his leadership philosophy on trust, competence, and giving people vision, guided by 1 Thessalonians 5:11: encourage and challenge others to flourish.

I'm 25 years into my career at cello poly. I'm president. At that time, I knew that it was getting very technical. We were talking about ISO 9000. We were talking about quality control. I'm reading all this stuff about leadership, and I'm taking on more responsibility in Dale Carnegie at night, my wife said to me one day, you meet too many people, offer too much advice, pay for too many meals. We're going to start charging for this. And then I started getting from Chet and my wife, well, what are you going to do with all this stuff? And so then Chet said, let's do it. I went home and I told my wife, okay, I'm ready. I'm going to do it. And I remember she started crying, can we really do this? He goes, she doesn't believe you because you don't believe it. And he just browbeat me for a year. He'd say, okay, what's the date? What's the date you're going to leave and go in to this business? All right? He didn't do it in January. Put another date down. And I put a date down. And then I went to my wife and I said, this is it. We're going. We believe at built to lead. That's what we see in great leaders, trust and inspire. And you got to have competence, and you have to be able to give people hope, a vision, a way forward. I coached this guy for a couple of years. I saw him at this point, party one night. He walked up to me, he gets into the old show, and he goes, kunk. I got to tell you something. I didn't know who the hell I was, but I do now. And I lit up. My wife lit up saying, God. I mean, when I first met him, he was a shell of a man, as opposed to who he is now. It was hard, you know? I mean, what's my magnum opus? My opus is very simple. It's 1 Thessalonians 5, 11. Therefore, go out and encourage and uplift, and I say, and challenge your fellow man to flourish as a human being.
