Why Trust is the Foundation of Leadership (And How to Master It)

Chad Silverstein describes how Built to Lead uses coached practice sessions to help people wake up from autopilot. Alicia was sleepwalking through life until she joined; practice forces you to face the limiting beliefs you've been avoiding.
Practice is probably one of the biggest benefits of being part of our community, getting time with coaches and an opportunity to learn from other people that are in the community. You'll have a free rein to work on whatever you want to work on in practice. There's always a plan, there's always purpose for it, but we do open it up and we start with everybody sharing where they'd want to go.
I'll tell you one thing that, that sticks in my mind, and I think this is from one of the videos that we did together, which is, uh, Alicia. Alicia said before Built to Lead I was sleepwalking through life. I was sleepwalking. I didn't really understand at the time, but the more that I perceived life, I realized the autopilot.
Practice was hard. I feel like it was more mentally draining than anything that I'd ever done. I mean, and I was a single mom, I worked a job, I've worked many jobs, I've struggled, and I feel like practice was more mentally draining than anything because I had to tap into what, for my entire life, I feel like the world is telling you to suppress. You know, the point of practice is to wake you up and have you talk about the things things that you don't realize are holding you back but are holding you back.
Today during Practice 69 with a team of leaders, we talked about where they want to take practice to make the time most productive. We were a team of 12 and there were almost 12 good ideas put forward. During Practice 25 with a team of ballers, we struggled to get similar clarity with the exact exercise. The difference was not me. The difference was not my son Tay. The difference was not the setting, time of day, or any other circumstance. The difference? Trust.
