You Have More Control Over Your Time Than You Think

Chad Silverstein set a daily stop time after his builder mentioned it, then texted his wife to hold him accountable. The practice is a simple discipline that prevents overwork and protects time for people who matter.

I was in a practice the other day with my builder, and I was explaining that I'm addicted to work. I absolutely love my labor of love. I'm in flow, but I work too much. And time is undefeated. And you only have so much throughout the day, throughout the week, the month, the year, and throughout your life. And I know what my priorities are, and I'm a little out of balance right now. And I think I want to be more heavily leaning towards the priorities that I know that are the most important. And he asked me, how do I guard against that? And I didn't have a good answer. So he seared me with something that he did. And I know that it was magic because it's already started to stick. He told me that his wife always asks him one question. What's your stop time? I love that. What's your stop time? This is something that you can do to put the guardrails up. You put up some fences in your life to protect you against yourself. Because if it was up to me, I'd freaking work 24 7. I can do it. I love it, and I don't get burned out from it, but I need to have a stop time. He told me my wife would really like this. So we sent a text during our practice to my wife that I told her that my stop time was going to be at a certain time. And he was right. It made her pretty happy. Our loved ones deserve our time. Our loved ones deserve to have us when the day is over. And if you're a leader and you're leading anything, you usually don't turn it off at a certain time, but maybe you should, and it's something that you can actually do. You have complete control over it. So I'm building a discipline to build in my stop time. And I gave my wife permission to ask me as much as she wants and as many times as she wants, what's my stop time, and then to hold me accountable to it. And hopefully you can do the same thing too. And yet you have disciplines to protect yourself against yourself so that you don't overwork, you don't burn out, and that you protect yourself against yourself. Sa.
