In this brief excerpt, Adam Conover introduces Robert Moses' extraordinary political clout as depicted in Robert Caro's The Power Broker. He recounts an anecdote where a New York City mayor attempts to dismiss Moses from one of his many appointed positions. Moses dramatically throws the termination papers back at the mayor, declares "I'm not fired," and retains the role, underscoring that his power eclipsed even that of the elected mayor. The story sets the stage for understanding Moses' unparalleled influence over New York's infrastructure and governance.
