Maitreyi Ramakrishnan breaks down Attack on Titan in 60 seconds: a boy in a walled city fights giant flesh-eating Titans, but the real story is about humanity's endless cycle of oppression and domination, where everyone takes turns being oppressor and oppressed.
I have an idea.
Tell me.
I'm gonna put a stopwatch. I'm gonna give you 60 seconds. Okay. And you're gonna explain it. I'm loving it. Do you think you can do it? No. Tell me when you're ready.
Okay, I'm ready. The story starts off with a young boy who's trying to see what's beyond these walls that surround his village. There are these tall walls, and you cannot see on the other side. But we know that there's these creatures called Titans that are big and like to eat human flesh, and they seem to be the enemy. But that's the original premise of the first season. We will later find out that this story is about much more, and we're questioning who really and who are the good guys, and what does bad and good even mean? But— oh my God, I'm at 30 seconds! If I had to encapsulate what this story is, it is about how humanity has the constant desire to oppress, to conquer, and take over people. And it is a vicious cycle that we cannot get out of. And the only thing you can hope and do, unfortunately, is hope that in this lifetime you will be the oppressor, unfortunately, and not the oppressed, because the next lifetime it could be switched, because that's a cyclical life. It's because we have the desire to constantly keep colonizing. and sacrificing other people. That was 1 minute and 4.
