Brian Crano discusses Philip Gourevitch's book about the Rwandan genocide, where roughly a million Tutsis were killed. Hutus were coerced into participating under threat of death, while propaganda called Tutsis "cockroaches" and physical differences made them easy to identify.
"A million" (as stated by the speakers in the excerpt).
The Hutus end up killing, I don't.
Know, a million, a.
Million of the Tutsis, and to the point where, like, if you were a Hutu and you wouldn't kill them, you would be killed.
That was the threat. Like in Germany or like in Russia, you have to tell on your, you know, you have to give up your friends, you have to give up your wife. Point was they would call the tootsies cockroaches. There were phenotypic differences that made them easy to spot.
Which they were tall and skinnier and.
Yeah, they were, had thinner features or something. Yeah, and longer, longer features. And then the, the, the, the government, the Hutu power government, which was setting this all into action, did what Putin has done, did what many people have done, which is to stage violence against their own people, to then start violence against their target.
