A YouTube interview discussing an espionage memoir titled 'The Shadow Cell' written by former CIA officers Andrew and Jihi Bustamante. The conversation covers the memoir's contemporary relevance, concerns at the CIA (including an internal mole), active operations and targets still hostile to the U.S., the CIA review and redaction process, and the book's strain on the authors' relationship.
This time on books that changed my life.
There has never been a more modern, timely espionage memoir written by a CIA officer. That's a big part of what spooked CIA.
There was a mole inside the CIA at the time.
Do you catch the mole?
We're talking about targets that are still enemies of the United States, operations that are still active worldwide.
How did writing this book change your relationship?
Not for the better.
The process of getting it through CIA, with all of their opinions and their redactions and their review, I wanted to fight over every word and every redaction.
We need to go through the process and make sure that we're not arrested. Because can you imagine it would sell.
A lot of books, though, if it got arrested.
That's what I'm saying.
How much of your soul did you give.
