Ensuring Success As A New Service Manager

A short episode of Service Driver Revolution (YouTube) where host Chris Collins runs a Friday Q&A. A caller, Ashley, describes being promoted from service advisor to service manager (VW) and being asked to take on additional brands (Mazda and Kia); the episode will provide advice on preparing for that broader management role.
Foreign.
Welcome to Service Driver Revolution, the Friday drive by. Oh, my voice is going. This is where we answer your questions. If you have a question, we will answer it. I don't have a Chris Joan here today. He's off doing a boot camp for dealer group in Chicago, one of our favorite clients. But I am here and I am going to answer your question. Remember, the number is 8333 Ask SDR. 8333 Ask SDR. And if we play your call on the show, we will send you some Service Drive Revolution swag. Okay, let's go to today's call. Hi, Chris. My name is Ashley. I've been a service advisor for about a year and a half. Recently I was promoted to service manager for our Volkswagen side of the business. And recently I was approached after only being in that position for about six months by our GM and owners to take over both Volkswagen, Mazda and Kia. And so just.
You know, what is it that I need to do to kind of prepare myself to take on that role? Thanks. Well, Ashley, thank you for the question.
Couple things come to mind, like, you know, just being completely honest. What I want to do is I want to get you in our coaching group because I want to support you. I want you to have the training you need, the training for your service advisors to kind of hedge all of your bets. That being said, the thing that I would focus on more than anything else is putting profit to the bottom line, not just gross and hiring the best talent that gives you the ability to scale, to have a bench. Right. So as you grow and you have more responsibility, being able to promote people and move people around that are talented. So being a people collector, collecting talent and focusing on profitability. When I say profitability, I also mean customer retention. They go hand in hand long term, maybe not short term, but long term. So those would be the two things. But the first thing I would say is get in our coaching so we can help you. And, you know, it's lonely where you're at and it's good to have some friends that have been there before and kind of understand the challenges. So thanks for the, for the question and keep us posted how that's going or hit us up@infohriscollinsinc.com and we'll set up a strategy session so we can talk to you about some bigger things. So thanks and I'll see everybody next time on Service Drive Revolution. Thanks for watching this week's Drive By. I hope we gave you something to think about over the weekend.
