Morgan Stevenson Cooper explains how J Dilla made drum machines sound human by reconciling swung and straight time into a new time flow. That insight changed how Cooper approached programming and creative work, inspiring him to write the children's book I can make a movie and build bridges through art.
This time on books that changed my life.
You know, Dilla was somebody who reconciled, swung time with straight time to create a whole new time flow. And he did it with an NPC drum machine, and he made a drum machine sound human.
There's guys like Dilla that approach music as an expression of art, not trying to write a hit.
And it changed my programming, especially at the time I read it. Coming off the heels of season one of Bel Air, it's like I needed that reminder. And I think as artists, it's our job to make things that we feel are worth existing.
So that feeling led you to write I can make a movie.
This, to me, is more than a children's book. What I hope to achieve while I'm on this earth is to build bridges through this art that I love.
Big question. How did Dilla time change your life?
