How Great CSI Can Be So Easy | SDR #311

Chris Collins and Christian discuss how to improve your CSI scores by treating fixed ops like a real business. Focus on staffing ratios, pay alignment, and staff training instead of chasing the numbers themselves. Honest communication and apologies recover more satisfaction than anything else.

Welcome to the big show. Today, we are going to lay out how you can have incredible csi. We just lay out the plan for you step by step. It's not complicated, right?
No.
And then there's some fun stuff in the news. We talk about jet skis, what kind of car you're going to get, and much, much more. Coming up on this edition of Service Drive Revol.
You know the one thing that I didn't like about Top Talk?
The fact that there was not enough great food.
It was all pretty great.
Stop playing around. I'm serious. This is a serious subject.
I'm ready. I'm ready for seriousness.
You got to make everything into a joke.
Only 80% of things this is.
The 20% isn't a joke.
All right, ready?
There weren't enough parts managers.
That is serious.
Like, they were like, what, five? Like, it wasn't.
I counted four, but maybe it was five.
We got to fix that by next year. We need more parts.
There is no doubt.
I went and spoke to a group.
Recently and it was general managers, parts managers, and service managers. Guess who is the most vocal and ask the most questions.
Wait, what? You know, so we were just talking about my new Land Rover that I bought.
Yeah.
From our client on the other side of the country.
There's no way to get that Land Rover anywhere closer.
It's been there for, like, two weeks. I'm just trying to get the thing.
Yes.
I've seen pictures.
I can't wait to see it in person. I'm so excited.
Did I show you the pictures?
You did.
So guess what he just said.
It's on its way.
No, he said that if they pick it up tonight, it could be here by tomorrow. How is that possible?
Or by, like, a couple days from now.
I don't understand. But maybe they're not.
The train doesn't make it that fast.
Yeah, but maybe they're not under the same regulations as a semi.
They have that thing that they have on Star Trek where you beam it.
Oh, that just takes seconds. It's so fast. If they beam it.
I wonder if this new one has WI fi.
Oh, I'm sure it probably does.
I still pay like 14 every month for the one I have. And the WI fi doesn't work.
And you've never used it.
But I have AT&T sim card in there, so.
By the way, might be the coolest outside insight color combination I've ever seen.
Yeah, it's worth it. It's like electric satin blue. So it's like, flat.
Yeah.
And then the inside is wine, which is like a Burgundy.
Super cool.
I almost went white, but I. I like the Burgundy. I'm kind of down, so.
So you're getting a new vehicle. Is Missy also getting a new vehicle?
I extended release to January.
So you're only a couple of months away from figuring that out then. Right after.
She doesn't know. And she doesn't know what she wants.
Yeah. So I have to figure that same thing out too. So there's three new cars.
I thought you're going to keep it.
I'm going to get something different.
You did say you were going to keep your midlife crisis car.
There's no doubt.
I think your car looks great.
I do like that car.
It's a good looking car.
Thank you. I. But I think I'm going to get a different one.
What are you thinking you're going to get now?
Well, most recently, let me tell you.
What would fit your personality. Like if there was like an AI tool and you put in like you throw Christian in there and then it kicks out. What car matches your personality? What do you think it would be?
A Lotus.
Fit in a Lotus. Have you ever driven a Lotus?
Never.
I can get my right leg in a Lotus.
Those cars are not built for large people.
They're built for tiny Italian.
Yeah.
Jockeys. They're like, get off your horse and come over here and drive this.
Right. Okay.
What are you thinking you're gonna get?
Well, I really like the Land Cruiser.
The Toyota.
Yeah. I think that's really well done. But.
I could be swayed in a completely different direction now. You know what Claudia thinks I should get?
What?
The Hummer Ev.
Oh, why?
She just likes the way it looks.
I never see those.
There's one at the Costco that we go to every week.
So every time you go to Costco every week?
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
What?
Every week?
Walk me through this.
It's just part of.
What time do we go?
Sunday.
Sunday?
Yeah.
And how far is Costco from you? Because there's three different ones. Which way do you go?
So it's in a Hambura. Where's that? Just off the 10.
Where's that? The 10 goes 10 going east. So you got like you're headed to Vegas.
Yes.
So out by that. In and out by Longo.
Before that?
Before Longo. Okay, so you go to that Costco.
We leave Claudia's work, go to Costco.
What time?
Let's say it's roughly around 11:30 when.
We get there in the morning.
Yes.
So what time do you leave well.
We leave at 7:30 in the morning to go to the studio to then when the student. The class.
So it's on your way home?
It's on the way home.
Okay, so you get there at 11:30. How are the lines at Costco at 11:30 on a Saturday?
Sunday.
Sunday, they're okay.
There. There are lines, but it's not unmanageable. It's. Exactly.
And then what do you buy? Because the idea of Costco is that you don't have to go once a week. Like it's five gallons of peanut butter.
Right.
It's a 50 gallon thing of mayonnaise. So what are you buying that you. Or maybe you're eating that much? Like you're going through five gallons of peanut butter in a week.
No. So the main reason it takes a week is because I eat a lot of the same lunches.
So which are what?
Rotisserie chicken. And then you cut the chicken up and then put it a little.
You don't have to go to Costco for rotisserie chicken. Whole Foods has great rotisserie.
I really like the Costco rotisserie chicken. They also have the best deal on eggs.
I feel like I have inside information on this. The Whole Foods rotisserie chicken is as good as Costco for the drive.
But there is no drive.
Oh, cuz you're saying you're on your way.
Yeah.
Okay. How about for the line that you got to wait in?
It doesn't affect me.
So that's it. You're going there for rotisserie chicken.
Yeah.
And then usually you don't drink. So you're not taking advantage of the gallon of kettle one you could get for $39.95 or whatever it is weird.
Is I like to look, I can see.
I'm like, oh, you go. You go perv the Caymus wine, don't you?
I do.
What's it. What's. What's it going for?
So the most recent one, I think is 75.
Oh, it came down.
Yeah. So. But it's a 20. 21.
Why do you think it came down?
I feel like Costco always sells it at a good value.
But it used to be 80 something.
What's. Yeah, so now it's 70.
But what's that? What's the Caymus?
That's really cheap.
It's like 25 bucks. Like buckshot or something like that. Do you know the one I'm talking about?
I don't think it's really cheap. The one you're talking about. Is 50 bucks. It's not 25.
Oh, the one where I saw was 25.
I think maybe the black label one that says CUS.
No, no, no. It's one step below that. I don't know, completely separately labeled.
I'm. I'm think I'm. What do you think I'm slumming it?
The knockoff? Cause it's. But, but I don't know.
Come on.
I do. Look at all that stuff. It's so funny. I don't know why I like appreciate but so eggs are a really good deal at Costco. And then I also really like the single serve salads at Costco.
So. Yeah, so those things happen every week because they'll perish otherwise. But no, I don't buy 5 gallons of peanut butter a week.
Okay.
I like how offended you are that I.
The only reason I think I would go to Costco is to buy a tv. I need a new tv.
And you know when you walk into Costco, what's the first thing you see is those TVs.
Yeah, I need a new one. I need a bigger1. My TV is like over 10 years old.
Are you kind of excited that you are going to get a newer, nicer TV for a fraction of the price you paid for the one that you have on your wall?
Well, I mean I have a bunch of TVs that are newer around the house. Right, like in our bedroom or out in the cabana, that sort of thing. Those are new TVs. The thing I hate about those TVs. We were talking about this with pop ups like every time turn it on, it wants to update and then it won't. Like I just want my Apple tv. I don't want any of that smart TV stuff. I don't like it, I don't need it. But it has to come up and you have to exit out of it. Yeah, every time. And then it's like oh, you got to update. Which I feel like that's just a CIA downloading your information or whatever. All the recordings they've made of whatever we're doing in our bedroom.
That's right. Yeah, sorry.
I wish that they would make a TV without all that. But that it had the cool, you know, graphics or yeah, whatever you call that.
My Sony TV updates all the time. Now that you say that CIA all the time, it's CIT for sure. But at the same time you're gonna get a really cool looking 85 inch TV.
Why so small?
Is the one that you have bigger than that?
Oh, no, the one I have now isn't. Isn't 80. It's like 68, I think.
Yeah.
No, I want. I want to go big. I want 105.
Do they make those? I didn't know that we could put one of those in your house.
The LED screen.
Yeah.
It's ridiculous.
But you know the thing. The thing. People are already bored with this conversation, but the thing that sucks about my TV isn't so much the picture. The picture's okay. It's that that TV doesn't have the out for me to run the sound through my stereo. And I've got this great stereo, and sometimes when I'm watching like a music thing or whatever, I want to be able to hear it through the stereo.
Yeah.
But I can't.
Okay. And. And no, I don't think they're bored. Because whenever I get stopped and people talk to me about service drive revolution, they're not talking about elr.
What are they talking about?
Stuff like this.
You're driving.
What kind of TV do you want? Are you really that bad a driver? Yeah.
How many people offered to hot rod my Jet Ski?
Yeah. Do you want to chip the Jet Ski?
I do. I want to chip it on a rapid. Do you know you can vinyl wrap a Jet Ski? Totally believe that, by the way. We haven't talked about that. What's the plan for that, do you think? Because now if I'm. If I'm gonna get that 325, I need to probably order it pretty soon.
Because, well, you went 2025 model, right?
That they're out?
They're already out. Okay.
Yeah. Jet Ski had like a big. A big, like, event, like the iPhone or Apple event, and they announced all the 2025, and then most of them come with the 325. I think that's like the thing now. My thing is like, so outdated, just two years out, and it's like old.
News, like a tv.
The only thing they haven't really upgraded is the stereo. But see, I need cup holders on that thing too. So I gotta order it. Then I gotta have them put in the cup holders at the dealership.
Yep. And yet again, people are not sick of hearing us talk about these Jet Skis either.
I really wonder how much they're gonna give me for the trade, because there is a world where I just buy myself a Jet Ski and keep the two.
There. There were a couple situations over the summer where we needed more than two Jet Skis. Fourth of July, they were just Labor Day when my cousins Were there, whatever. Right. And then how cool would it be? Like, just think about this for a second and I hope nobody's listening to this.
There's no chance anyone's listening but you and me.
They're all riding the 300 and I'm the only one with the 325.
I feel like that's. That would make you super happy.
I would feel superior. Yeah. Because I would be faster.
Because no one's hitting top speed for the most part. But yes, you would be fast.
But I would get to the top speed faster.
Yeah.
Which I never do anyways because you just burn through gas. But think about that for a second. Also, my other plan, did I tell you this? I want to get the one seater, like the race one. Cuz I don't like people riding behind me. I never ride with somebody else on the jet Ski. That's always. Other people do that.
I think I've seen Missy ride with you once.
Yeah, it's not our thing. She rides.
She's a pro.
Yeah. So I do think like I should just get. But then the problem is where do you dock it?
Yeah. I wonder how fast those buggers are.
It looks fast.
Yeah. Because it's, it's gonna.
All those, all those guys in Florida that stand in knee high water waiting for an alligator to eat them, that do the reviews of the jet skis. I don't know why they're all in Florida and I'm watching them talk about the new jet skis and just thinking like, what do you do when the alligator comes out of this swamp in Florida in the bayou that you're riding these new jet skis by this stuff? They go from island to island.
It's.
It's insane. But they haven't really done videos yet of the.
2025S. I'm kind of waiting for that.
Yeah. I feel like the time is probably now to get that order.
Yeah, I need to order it. Right. And get the cup holders, the whole thing. And then vinyl. If I got it and I had it wrapped, think about how cool that would look.
So the first time you launch camo or something the way that you want it, you think that would make it hard for people to see you?
Think about when the police out there pulled me over on the jet ski and I'm like, how could you see me? It's camo.
There's no way they'd be able to see you.
Yeah, it's camo.
Yeah. You could be like.
Like the bottom half could be like bluish, brownish, like the water and the top hat could be green like the grass. It could be a really custom camo or mirror.
Just make it a mirror. Like chrome. So it just blends in. Yeah, but reflects the sun back in their eyes.
Let's do the whole thing.
We gotta get on that.
We do.
And chip it. Should I chip it?
Why not?
I've never taken these ones in on warranty.
You know what's funny is we were just talking not too long about how risk averse you are. But whatever it is about these things, you throw your risk out the window and you. You want to go fast.
No, I want the ability to go fast.
Yeah, but you don't mess around. I've seen you. You're not afraid to get that thing up 60 miles an hour. Which I feel like it's quick on a jet ski.
I know people are bored of this already, but one other thing that. That I think about with this is we need a gas tank down there. Like I can't keep going to the gas station every morning filling up 5 gallon, like 105 gallon jugs of gas and hiking them down. We need, we need, we need a gas tank.
Remember we did that with that X5 rental car and there was like 10 different jugs. There's no way that V. That vehicle ever had that much gas in it before. But yeah. So a little tank you could do that in above ground.
Yeah. And then I need some sort of hose that goes down. That neighbor on that side would love that.
We've never told anybody that drama about implanting the tree on our side.
That's a no. No at the lake. We probably should get going eventually.
Is gonna have an accident.
I'm just pretty like I've been accused of being psychic. I'm. I see in the future that tree being unhealthy.
Yeah. So. So we were all talking about getting new cars in the news today.
Do you know if you had to guess like a price range of like the fastest growing new car sales? What do you think the price range is? Within like a 10 grand range. Like where people are buying.
There's no car for ten grand.
No, the $10,000 range.
Like 70 to 80,000.
60 to 70,000.
What's that, what's that electric car Byron bought the. The Chinese one.
It's like bfy or something like that.
That thing's like 15 grand. But there's no 10 grand car.
No, no, no 10 grand range. So like.
So you're saying like 20 to 60 to 70 to 40.
60 to 70. What do you Think the fastest growing segment is.
It's gonna be low. Right. I, I feel like the cars are priced out of.
Well, also like I feel like dealers are just buying stuff that's way over equipped. Like people want the strippy.
That's right.
Even trucks, like you can't buy a truck for less than 70 grand. People need a truck for 45 and even. And they need a good truck for 45. Yeah.
It's insane to me.
No, they're. Somebody needs to make a truck for 45 that's good. Doesn't need to have all the stuff, but it needs to be good.
I think so too. So the fastest growing market and price range, 20 to 30 grand. A new car.
Who makes a $20,000 new car?
So the ones that they talked about in the article, Chevy tracks.
There was a Kia.
And there was a couple of them in there. But 20 to $30,000, Trax is an SUV.
Don't you think the commitment to trucks as far as the profitability of manufacturers is going to have a backlash? Because people want cars. Ford doesn't really make a car.
So all of the domestics got rid of their cars. Basically.
They're gonna have to bring them back. Yeah, they're gonna have to.
Unless they're just deferring that market to the imports just because they can't keep up with the Toyota cam.
It doesn't make sense.
I agree. Unless they're retooling.
Yeah, I want. Yeah. I wonder how long until Tesla comes out with a $30,000 car.
Well then that's the Model 2. So they've been threatening that for a while.
They just don't have the batteries. Right.
I think that is the problem. There's a different battery with that thing.
Would you consider a cyber truck? Why not?
I don't like the way it looks for the most part. Like I appreciate it. I just wouldn't drive it.
Oh, I love the way it looks.
I know you do. It's not.
But I'm deviant like that. Yeah, Yeah.
I don't know, there's. I'll probably change my mind three more times before I. I would love to.
Have a cyber truck. We still don't know where to park it.
That's probably part of my problem too. That would take up like my whole two parking spot space.
What's in the news?
That was the news. That people are revolting against expensive cars and the twenty to thirty thousand dollar market is growing.
Okay, let's talk about csi. So you were speaking in an event and you asked him like, what are the biggest issues that you have?
Yeah.
And the thing that came up more than anything else was csi.
Csi.
Okay. So.
The first thing that we notice about people that struggle with CSI is that they're not intentional, they're passive. They want CSI because they want the manufacturer off their back, but they're not intentional about it. Because if, if you just think about this from like 10, 000ft, like just step back a little bit. CSI is a manufacturer's band aid to inconsistency in their franchise. Dealers. Yeah, right. They ca.
They. They want their customers to be loyal to the brand. Therefore, positive experiences are important. That's why CSI is created. Because it was wild, wild west in.
The 80s, and now dealers that didn't have a good customer experience.
And don't take fixed stops seriously and just run it as a necessity. But it's not a profit center. It's not something that they're really focusing on or understand are inconsistent with csi, but they're not intentional about fixed ops. So the first thing that we would say is get in the business of fixed ops. Like, start treating fixed stops like it's important and that the customer experience is important. And it isn't about the manufacturer holding your feet to the fire. It's about actually intentionally creating an experience where customers feel like you're wanting them to come back, like, more than anything else.
Which is the. You're not just saying for business you.
Have to come here for warranty, so take it or leave it. It's kind of the approach. Right. So it starts there. Like, you should have had a good customer experience to begin with, but now the manufacturer is doing this to you. And so you got to figure it out. They're forcing you to, but you shouldn't be in that situation.
Right?
Right. Then the first thing is, once we get past that is it's your systems. So most of the time in a dealership, your advisor to technician ratio is off. How many appointments each advisor is doing in the time between the appointments is a mad house. It's chaos. Like, it's just not well planned out. We don't have enough techs in the shop to do the work. Right. So we don't have enough advisors or enough techs. The pay plans don't line up the way they should. Right.
We're not training them or empowering them. And we don't hire the right people, in a sense. And then if we do get the right people and they start doing well and making money, what do we do?
Cut their pay plan.
Cut their pay.
That's CSI in three minutes.
That was pretty good. That's a.
We don't need to say anything else.
See you next time.
Right?
Yeah. So it's not hard.
Well, it's hard, but it's not hard. Yeah, you got to get to work, but you got to. You got to tell yourself a different story. The story you're telling yourself is that it's a necessary evil. And fixed stops is a really good way to sell more cars to endear customers to you and to have high fixed absorption. That makes you more competitive in the market. But you're telling yourself a different story.
It's also the cheapest way to sell more cars.
Yeah.
By far.
Like, there's good point.
No comparison to how much it costs to grab a stranger.
If you're gonna do it, why not do it good?
Yeah.
Do it well.
And then I think the biggest problem with people trying to fix that CSI is they chase the score, not the experience. Yeah, they're fixing the. Trying to fix the symptom.
But that was all pretty good. I think that was everything that. That I had all in three minutes, where mine was more like 80 or 90 minutes. But, yeah.
That was pretty fun.
I think the last thing I would say is, is that.
Tell the truth. And also, like, if you do something wrong, just apologize and say you do something wrong. That's another thing I see, like, where customer satisfaction goes in the toilet because we're trying to be right.
Oh, it's the worst.
So those were.
There's no prize for being right.
Yeah.
