How Long Should Used Cars Take To Recon?

Chris Collins and Christian Lafferty discuss how long used car reconditioning should take. They start with a story about getting bounced between rental car companies at Cincinnati airport and tipping a helpful shuttle driver.

Today on the show, we talk about how long should it take to recon used cars. Also, we answer a question from brooke, who believes 98.63% of what we say.
Roughly.
We also talk about should you assume the multipoint inspection or should you ask permission and why I'll never rent a car from a rental car company again. I'm Chris Collins. This is Christian Lafferty. And that's what's coming up on Service Drive Revolution.
So we've been working together for a while. Right. It's been a few years. I would like to think that you're going to remember me. Like, I feel really comfortable that tomorrow you'll remember me. Does that sound pretty accurate?
For sure. How could I forget you?
I don't know. What about next week? Do you feel like you'll remember me next week?
Of course.
Now, this is a little bit of a stretch, but do you feel like you'll remember me in a year?
Yes, for sure.
Well, I'm glad we got that out of the way. Knock, knock.
Who's there?
You said you'd remember me.
That was a long way around the cul de sac, but you got me. That's pretty good. We, Christian and I just flew to Kentucky. Cincinnati.
Yeah. We fly into Kentucky and then shoot up into Ohio.
Into Ohio. So we. This is our first traveling in. Would you call this post Covid.
Whatever.
Whatever.
Yeah. We haven't done this since. Since last year.
We both traveled, but not together.
Correct.
And I haven't traveled as much as you have. So we get to the airport and Hertz is usually our go to.
Even though Hertz never has my name up on the thing ever. It's never happened. It doesn't matter. It's like 11 at night. Whatever. And I'm a Hertz something.
You're Hertz gold. So that's the thing.
And we should probably put a scam.
I believe so. But we should put some context.
Everybody Hertz Gold, right? If you got a pulse, you're Hertz gold.
It took me three minutes to become Hertz gold, but it has never gotten me onto the screen.
But I use Hertz like wherever I go. I like Hertz for the most part. They usually have pretty good cars. Yep. Right. There's always this weird thing that happens in the office where they book me, like, definitely something I don't want. Like a mid sized car. And I'm not driving that. So I'm always like upgrading. So if my name was on the board and I went to the car that was booked for Me probably wouldn't be taking that car most of the time, right?
Well, it ends up, I don't know, we're in the air and we get a text. Hertz doesn't have any cars, so you're gonna have to go to Avis.
Beautiful Avis.
So, like, okay, well, we're gonna go to Avis. That's what's gonna happen. What do we say?
Like, we're at 30,000ft. We're captive.
So it's very clear that all of these rental car companies are going through bankruptcy because they're a disaster. They don't know what they're doing. So we land in Kentucky and we go to the part of the airport where you wait for the rental car vans to pick you up and then drive you to the rental car place.
Exactly.
Now, in Kentucky, Cincinnati, the rental car places are not in one big building together. Like they would be in Seattle or, you know, whatever.
Dallas, any other major metro airport.
They're spread out. So they have. At the airport, they have, like, this is where you wait for the AVA shuttle. This is where you wait for the dollar shuttle. This is where you wait for, you know, whatever shuttle. And this is where you wait for the Hurt shuttle. So we get there, and there's no AVA shuttle. No. And so I'm like, so should I call Avis? And you're like, I don't know. You were no help, as usual. No help at all. So I. I look at the calendar invite, and it has a phone number. So I'm like, okay, I'm going to call. So I call, and nobody answers. Like, nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. Then all of a sudden, the Hertz van shows up. And this guy's an entrepreneur.
Genius. Genius.
He says he parks in the Hertz thing, which, I don't know, is what, 50 yards away? Yep. But he yells, have you guys been waiting for a this long? Then we're like, well, kinda, but not really. Like, I don't know, we'd waited five minutes. Yeah, yeah. No, because I called.
Probably.
Yeah. We're like. And he goes, yeah, something about they never come or something. I don't know, like something. And he says, I'll take you there. And we're like, okay, us and a bunch of people. Because clearly a bunch of people were going to Avis because Hertz was out of cars.
Cars.
So this guy, think about it. This, this shuttle driver is out of cars, have no cars. He's got no work.
He's got a family to feed.
He's got a family to feed. And so he's picking up Avis customers because he knows Avis sucks. And their shuttle comes by once an hour. They don't pick up the phone. Whatever. Right. So we get in the Hertz thing, and immediately Christian and I are like, oh, we got to tip this guy. Right?
Not just us, though. Everybody on the van.
Yeah. So I'm like.
So I like. I flashed Christian. I'm like, hey, I got a 20. I'm gonna take care of him. Did you tip him also? No, because I. You had money in your hand. You were gonna give him a five. So I gave him a 20 just because I was so impressed that this guy.
Has, like, he could be sitting at Hertz going, oh, we're out of cars. Yep. With his speed up, any money. But he's like. He's showing some ambition and clearly knows that there's a gap in the marketplace because Avis doesn't know what the hell they're doing. Yep. So he takes us to the Avis place, and on the. On the ride there, the other people in the, you know, van, I'm asking him, like, oh, do you go to Avis a lot?
Can you?
And one guy's like, yeah, that's what our corporation does. And another guy said, oh, we just switched to them. And so I'm like, okay, well, we're gonna see what this Avis thing. Cause honestly, I don't think I've ever done Avis. Right.
I don't think I have either.
I understand the Hertz thing. I understand the Enterprise thing. Like, usually if I don't do Hertz, I'll do Enterprise. Yeah.
Enterprise is my go to. I just started doing.
