Jenna Johnson talks about self-criticism versus self-love in dance and creativity. She explores how fear-driven motivation differs from working from a place of genuine appreciation for yourself and your craft.
How does the version of you that is a critic dance different than the version of you that loves yourself?
I'm motivated by choreography through fear when I'm in the critic mindset.
So how does that look?
It's always like, oh, is this good enough? Is this section going to be as impactful? Are they going to do a better dance than this? This isn't going to get me Emmy nominated. Instead of being like when I'm fully just in love with the artist that I am and appreciate, appreciative of the gift that I have, it's created straight from my heart and my emotion and that's when I feel like I always have the most magical dances or products and I feel like I'm a better teacher. I communicate better to my student or to my partner and it's more just out of like this euphoric creative process than the stress and fear of is this good enough? Always questioning myself.
