A craftsman treats every element as intentional and invests effort to realize that vision. The speaker, wired for pragmatism, finds this deliberate approach at odds with his practical mindset, yet argues that true craftsmanship is essential for expressing what you actually care about.
If you care radically about what you care about, you will not quit your craft until it reflects what you care about. So when I see those paintings that are like, to me, they might look like splatter on a board, to the craftsman, everything is intentional and they put real effort into that intention. That's not how I've ever been wired. And being somebody wired for pragmatism and practicality, there's nothing less practical and pragmatic than craftsmanship.
