Independents vs. Dealerships

Chris Collins and Christian compare independent repair shops to franchise dealerships. Independents give you more vehicle variety and direct customer relationships, but dealerships have on-site parts and higher volume. Each path trades something off.

Five months in and then blowing it.

I prefer the tattoo.
8333 ask SDR. That's 8333, ask S D, R, which stands for service, drive revolution.
Do you think we could offer, like, a really super swag bag for anybody that tattoos 8 through 3, ask SDR on their arm?
I don't want to. One time I had a girlfriend tattoo my name on her. Bonnie.
Kiss of death.
Guess how many weeks later we broke up.
One, two.
Oh, you were close. So I feel like if somebody. This is trauma from my. How old was I? Probably 18.
Yeah. Let it out.
I feel like if somebody tattooed SDR on their body, they would break up with us who know it's not a way for us to build. Our audience is building. We're growing.
Yeah.
We would lose somebody. We'd lose a person or two or three or how many people do it? So I'd much rather. If you were going to get a tattoo, tattoo Christian's face, then what does.
That mean is going to happen to me? I'm going to lose my face?
No, they just will still like me. But they will break up with you. They won't laugh at your jokes. Pick deep. We still have them as a listener. They're still subscribing.
Right.
Okay. Get in the hall.
Let's go to the questions.
Hello, my name is Dennis. I have a question. What the pros and cons working in independent shop and in a franchise dealership? Was there adventures and disadvantages working in these two places?
Good question. The two things that jump out to me right away. When you work in a dealership, you are riding up, or if you're a technician, you're working on the same brands and the same cars, and you have a parts department right there with the parts for the cars. When you work at an independent, for the most part, you're working on a variety of cars. Now you might be working at an independent that just concentrates on German cars. So you're working on BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen. So there's some synergy there. But most of the time, you're not gonna have the parts. They're gonna have to come from somewhere. And you.
You Know you, you have to learn different models and different brands have different nuances.
So you have more variety when you work at an independent, which can be hard or can be fun depending on how you see things. If you're a technician that loves challenges and loves to figure things out and is curious, you, you will, you will have a lot of fun in an independent.
Yeah, I think the. So from the advisor standpoint, what I would say is my exposure to people that live in the dealer world versus the independent. The independent advisor typically is a little bit more natural of a problem solver.
Whereas I think that sometimes the dealership advisor relies on different departments or the technician. But they definitely. Your independent shop advisor has that feeling of the buck stops with them, which I really like. To your point also that they get versed in different things and I would say that they're also.
They have a better understanding of the mechanics of repairing vehicles. And, and finally the, the thing that you get from the independent shop is when people come back to see you, you know, it's because of you, not because of the brand.
I would say also that the volume is higher at dealerships. You have more time with the customers than an independent.
Yeah. And the relationship focus is really, really good. We've got some independent shops that we work with that are phenomenal at petting.
The dog, but at the end of the day, it's what you make it.
You can do well at either. Yeah, I don't know that there's. I don't know that there's a better or worse, but there's definitely some differences between the two that I would recognize.
Thanks for the question, Dennis. Say a little prayer for our friend Christian here in Cinco de Mayo that he doesn't get too crazy.
I will be utilizing Uber minimum, keep.
It below five shots of tequila tonight.
What do you think would happen to me after five shots?
That's what I'm saying. Like five is the limit. Don't do more than five.
Like, I mean, at that point, am I dancing in the streets? Five shots.
Don't drive for sure.
I mean, you could make a case I shouldn't drive anyways.
You're going to be slurring your jokes.
I'd also be telling them all. I think too, that might be a funny night at the end of the day.
