Chris Collins (speaker) argues that most people prioritize fitting in over independent judgment. Using COVID as an example, he claims widespread conformity to dominant narratives (and increased consumption of partisan media like Fox News and MSNBC) and contends that many people attribute outcomes to luck, fate, chance or destiny rather than their own agency.

Ninety percent of people are caught up in fitting in. I mean, Covid was a great example of that. How many people fell right into place? Everybody was real quick to conform and follow the narrative. More people are watching Fox News and MSNBC right now as we're sitting here in this room blaming the government for whatever's going on. Most people believe more in luck and fate and chance and destiny than in their own outcomes.
