Chris Collins shows off recent library purchases, mixing investment pieces with personal reads. He bought a signed first edition of Jack Black's You Can't Win, a Norm Macdonald SNL anthology, and is building a dedicated photography room for limited-edition books by Todd Hido and Jürgen Teller.

Today I'm going to tell you what books I have recently added to the library. So this is my private library. I'm always acquiring books either for investment or learning. It goes from human behavior and psychology all the way to photography. There is a big focus right now here in the library on photography because most of the books I've bought in the last month have been photography books. We've built a room just dedicated to photography books. And then I'm going to show you some that I'm really, really interested in or think are really fun. So welcome to the Syndicate X Library where we love books. <LYRICS>I could love again. Oh, 'cause I'm in love. I could love again.</LYRICS> First that I have is from the episode of Books That Changed My Life with Johnny Knoxville. Oh, hello. If you haven't checked that out, we'll put a link in the description. But the book that changed his life was You Can't Win. And I bought two of these, so one is a first edition and the other one is a later edition, but it's actually signed by the author. This is not by Jack Black the actor, this is by Jack Black the outlaw. Yes, yes, correct. You have to explain that to people. And so here it is, if you can see this. I love that this has the library of who it came from. Now I paid $2,500 for this book, and I think it'll go up in value quick because he's not here anymore and he didn't sign that many books. This one is not signed, but it's just a first edition. It was so fascinating how Johnny Knoxville, like, knew all the books that were influenced by this book. Next is, this one I just think is cool. So it's a book about how to cook in prison. What things to use to cook and then how you do it. Love that premise. I think it's so funny. So "Cooking in Maximum Security" by Matteo Ghaidi. Next is a show that I stumbled into at LACMA here in Los Angeles. One of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Called The Day Tomorrow Began. I hope I'm saying this name right, Tavaris Strachan. This show that he has there, the attention to detail is incredible. My favorite part of it is the laundromat. To be able to design a room like that that's interactive and people are experiencing the room, it's not like art hanging on a wall, it's an experience. To pull that off like he did is pretty incredible. The first room starts off actually with this book, The Encyclopedia of Invisibility, and it's all over the wall. Each page is in an individual box, kind of looks like this but a little bit different. I'm going to find all of his books and add them to the library because I was that impressed. The reason why I got this is because it is signed by Norm Macdonald, and it's really hard to get anything that's really signed, not a photocopy. Has other signatures too from the cast. And so this is Saturday Night Live, the first 20 years. I know this will go up in value, but I paid about $1,300 for it. Speed round. I've been reading this book and, uh, man, it's really taken me for a ride. It's about the prisoners of war that China and Korea took during the Korean War and how they converted a percentage of them to sympathizing with communism. And then it just goes into the recipe of how they did that, which is very similar to the recipe of how you brainwash somebody, build a cult. That's something that fascinates me. The Manipulated Mind. Along that same line, Stories Are Weapons. I've actually started this and it's really good. She has a couple good videos on YouTube too. How to Win an Information War. This is another book by him, This Is Not Propaganda. Fascinated with banned books. This is a book I ordered in that pursuit. Cosmos and the Psyche. Hellenistic astrology is very, very interesting and I want to understand. This is just one I picked up that I've almost finished, The Decision The Paradox: Complex Journey of Decisions Out of Choices. Attached: Are You Anxious, Avoidant, or Secure? How Science of Adult Attachment Can Help You Find and Keep Love. Psychoanalytic Group Therapy. Fun Stuff. This book just came out. It's a collaboration with Marina Luz. Also came with an olive oil. And I bought it, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I don't know, do you keep olive oil or do you use it? And then if I use it, like, you feel weird opening it because it's limited, but I don't know. But this book is The Dead Are Glad to Be Remembered, Todd Kaido. Actually, uh, Got two of these because I think this is a pretty limited run of this. Yeah, so there's 500 of this. It's really cool. I got two just because I wanted one to not open and then one to open. We are working on a bookshelf for all of our Todd Hido books, and we're trying to rethink what a bookshelf should be. And I think, I think we're pretty close, and we're gonna make it. When we do that, we'll film it and show it to everybody, but I want a dedicated bookshelf to Todd that represents the spirit of how his pictures make me feel, because I was that impressed. You feel like you're going to get stung by a bee just looking at this. You can just kind of tell his work by his style. A little street, a little avant-garde, but it's also very human. Accomplished photographer Jürgen Teller. He works with this magazine system, which is dedicated to the fashion industry. This magazine is literally like a photography book to me. I'm putting them in the Jürgen Teller section in the photography room. A pretty lim— His photography makes you feel like you're there. Like, you feel like you're going to get stung by a bee just looking at this. I end up having to buy these used on eBay because every time I go on there and try to buy the latest issue, I am told that I can't buy them from System themselves from my address in LA. I've tried to put in a couple different addresses. Not sure if you could buy it if you live in New York, but you can't buy it if you live in Los Angeles. I don't know. Insane. Needs to be black, a dense black to go with my blue eyes. Another collaboration. This is 108 of 300, and I love the design of this thing. It's kind of two books in one. And it has a bunch of trinkets. Look at this picture frame. Pretty cool. So it's, uh, Abloh Teller, 70 pages, board book. And then this book, which these pages are really thick, like they're like cardboard. You have like these little kind of toy soldiers almost. The vibe I get here is that Teller is taking the pictures and Virgil is doing the work. And I love that Teller often will make a book about a photo session that he did. It's a cool book. I think that's—
