A conversational transcript (Chris Collins and a second speaker) arguing that formal training for new employees is essential. Key points: lack of training communicates that the employer doesn't care; training provides communication, feedback, and a career path; informal "shadowing" or "ask if you have questions" onboarding creates unhealthy cultures and bad habits; bringing employees from other industries (e.g., Starbucks) requires industry-specific training; Chris Collins, Inc. offers training materials (videos and a book) designed to teach service advisor skills.

So let's, let's kind of go through a list. So what does it say to new employees coming in when they're being onboarded, when there's no training?
That they don't care is the thing, I think. Yeah.
And how, how important do you feel?
Not very important.
What is something that younger, enthusiastic, bright eyed kids.
Think is valuable, that they're.
A part of something.
Training. Yeah, they want to be trained. They want communication.
They, they Feedback, Lots of feedback.
The whole thing. Right. How can you bring in people with no experience in our industry and.
Create a career path for them to be successful? Starts with the T and ends with.
The inning T Reigning training.
How can you avoid bad habits for new people coming in?
Stick them with the crotchetiest advisor that you have.
Can I say crotchety on this?
How do you create a culture of performance when people start and the training is. Your desk is over there. Follow Joe around for a week. Here's your login. Get to work.
Yeah.
How do you establish a culture with that?
Well, you do establish a culture. It's just not a quality, healthy culture. My favorite is the one where they always tell you, let me know if you have any questions. But they don't mean that.
Yeah, I remember somebody asking how your day is.
Yeah, I remember when I became an advisor, I was like, let me know if you have any questions. And I went and asked the questions and then he was always like, go ask somebody else.
Also, when you're, when you're speaking of culture, there's, there's a basic language in our industry. That's all you know. It doesn't come from restaurants, it doesn't come from other industries. When you hire barista from Starbucks to be a service advisor, they don't know anything about our industry. If you don't put them through training, they don't have the basic understanding of what anything is or what it means.
Yes. And then the employee, other employees just think that person's dumb.
So, so you said sales is intentional because they always have training. We're leaving the culture to chance. We're leaving the career path to chance and our retention of employees.
Right. That's right.
We're leaving the success of them to chance and our results to chance. And it's all fixed very simply by having training. By the way, guess who offers training?
Chris Collins, Inc. Yeah, we have some.
Of the best training, or at least that's what you will think.
Everyone.
Yeah, we, well, we think about it from your perspective like, yeah, what would you want? And then we try to design it.
I would say that, you know, it's funny is that advisor training is just like that. It's like, I don't know if you did it when you recorded those videos was like, what's all the stuff I wish I would have gotten told, but that's how it seems when you watch it.
Same thing with the book, right?
Yeah. The book is, is identical in terms of like, you wrote it from the perspective of like, if I'm trying to teach my fellow man and woman how to write service, that's how you wrote that book is from that perspective.
