Short excerpt from a YouTube video review praising Toni Morrison's novel The Bluest Eye. The speaker describes the novel as both tragic and beautiful, ahead of its time, a masterpiece with pastiche and avant-garde elements, notable for its inventive language ('plasticity of the page'), dynamic dialogue that evokes a specific place, and remarkable especially as Morrison's first novel.

The bluest eye. It's both a tragic story and an incredibly beautiful story that is so far ahead of its time. It is a masterpiece of epic proportions. It is pastiche. It's all of these styles. And there's avant garde elements to the way the language is written, just in the plasticity of the page, their dynamics. And the use of dialogue is so brilliant that you can hear the whole world that. And it's specific in place. And to me, it's just such an achievement, especially as Toni Morrison's first novel. You read it and it feels like it dropped out of the sky.
