Sara Bareilles on how accepting mortality changes you: when you stop pretending you have forever, you notice what's actually in front of you. Each moment becomes a gift because it's not guaranteed. You get more intimate with the life you're already living.
What changes in a person when they accept mortality? Like, if I'm walking around pretending that I'm gonna live forever, I'm one way. And then if I accept that I'm not gonna live forever, what changes?
I mean, I imagine there's a variety of answers to that, but one thing that comes to my mind is just the gift of presence. It's like if you know you're not guaranteed another moment, you might pay a different kind of attention to this moment. And gives, it gives more value to the moment that you're actually in, that the thing you're waiting for is not a life that happens over there, it's the one that you're surrounded by. So getting really intimate and getting your hands dirty with the life that you already have is a really valuable, I think a really valuable experience. And in a lot of ways, probably a more enriching and satisfying experience. Yeah. Because you're not, you don't have one eye on what's happening down the road.
