Secrets Of Success

This is a short YouTube monologue by Chris Collins ("Secrets Of Success") that reframes success into three linked dimensions: internal (self-perception), external (how others perceive you), and transcendent (the positive impact you have on others). Collins argues that focusing on providing value, mastering current opportunities, and helping others (mentoring/sending the elevator down) aligns these dimensions and produces lasting success.

I think people misuse the word success and it confuses most people. And instantly when you say success, people think money. But there's a lot of people that haven't achieved a huge amount of money that are living very successful lives and are very happy. It's more about three different things. It's how you perceive yourself successfully, it's how the world perceives you, and then it's what you've done to impact the rest of the world.
If you show up to work every day, whatever they're paying you, you give them more than what they paid you for.
So the way I'm going to talk about success is internal success, external success, and transcendent success.
Internal is the movie you have playing in your head of your success.
Your internal compass of success is guided by you and your feelings, how you feel about yourself. It really relative to you and no one else. It is kind of idiosyncratic that way. From the outside, people think I'm successful, but if you ask me, I'm not living up to my full potential. And so it's really your compass. It's a compass that you create. It's what you see when you look in on the window of yourself.
External is how the rest of the world perceives you. And it's very important because you're not going to take advice from somebody who's broke or poor on how to run your business better, right? You know, nobody, nobody wants a fat trainer at the gym. Your internal and external can be completely in conflict with each other. So you appear externally successful, but inside you're miserable. So there's a lot of people out there that externally appear to be successful because they're trying to achieve something, but they're not there yet or they're not using transcendent success. There's nobody who is successful that hasn't contributed to other people. Transcendent success is how much whatever it is you wake up and do every day impacts the rest of the world. Like how many people have you helped? Or how many people's lives have you made better? You could be a plumber, but how much does your plumbing transcend? How many plumbers are you mentoring? How many customers are you touching with your work? So transcending you can help and send the elevator back down and mentor the younger or the ones that need help coming up to where you are. There's always a way for you to transcend your own little world and pass it along, make it grow. The great thing about transcendent success is if you get that right, the internal and external balance themselves out.
Let's be honest, most people are always looking at the horizon for new opportunities, but they're not maximizing the ones they have right in front of them. The key is just look down and be grateful for what you have now. And be the best chef, the best mechanic, the best flower shop owner. Put everything you have, including your soul, into it and provide huge value for people. Then watch what happens and how the doors open. Because you know what little hinges swing big doors. Success doesn't have superstitions. There's no getting lucky. There's no secrets to it. What it really is is the more value you give the world, the people around you, your career, the more you put your heart and your soul, it the more success is going to rain down on you. And you can't hide from it. It'll seek you out and find.
