Self-Care Part 2: How to Never Lose Control (Service Drive Revolution Drive By)

Chris Collins explains emotional self-care through the theory of the plates: you can't stop emotions once they start, so you must avoid the provocations that trigger them in the first place. Skip the negative inputs, avoid the people who throw plates.

Welcome everybody to Service Drive Revolution in your Friday drive by. Hope you're having a great week. I want to give you a little something to think about going into the weekend. You know, we work with hundreds of managers in our coaching group. The one thing that comes up over and over again is a lot of times managers are kind of focused on the wrong thing and they're all twisted. They're twisted about their market, about their boss, about something that somebody said, their spouse at home, and none of it really, really matters. And so today in our continuing series on the five pillars of self care, I want to talk about number two. And number two is your emotional self care. Now this is an interesting one because it isn't really what you think. The fix isn't where you think it is. You can't really fix your emotions because once emotions happen, they've already happened, you can't stop them. What we need to do is fix before they happen. Right? We got to get ahead of it. I want to start with a quote here from Morgan Freeman. He said, self control is strength, calmness is mastery. You need to get to the point where your mood doesn't shift due to ignorance, insignificant actions of someone else. Don't allow others to control the direction of your life. Don't allow your emotions to overpower your intelligence. A mentor of mine many years ago.
Explained something that kind of happens and he called it the theory of the plates. And so if somebody has a plate in their hand, just imagine I'm holding a plate right now and you're sitting across from me and I throw you the plate. You have two choices. You can catch the plate or you can let the plate fall to the floor. Now if you catch the plate now you are holding the plate and you got to either hold the plate or you got to throw the plate back. And that's often what happens in communication. And is if somebody says something and you catch a negative interpretation of it, you're going to emotionally react. And now you're holding the plate. But if you don't catch it and you ignore it, then you're not holding the plate, then you're not going to have an emotional reaction. So your interpretation of what somebody says is what causes your emotions. And so then the conclusion is it's a choice. You can manage to the middle, just manage to the middle. Or you can read things into what people say, you can think about what people say, you can take insults. Like one thing that I learned early on on social media is if you want to read everybody's Comments, it'll mess you up. Somebody gave me the advice, like, just don't read the comments. And so I don't read the comments. I don't, I'm not on there. I mean, I don't even know how to log into my Facebook. I don't, I don't care. I don't want that. Right. And so because there's trolls on there that say negative things and say weird stuff. And I don't, I don't want it in my head because I would react if I saw it. So the best thing for me to do is not to see it. So then I don't react. And so it's a choice. It's up to you how you interpret what people say. And that, that's your emotional self care is don't catch the plate. Don't catch it. Let it drop on the floor and ignore what people say. Stay away from people that are throwing plates at you. Avoid those situations. And you know, we're. One of these that's coming up is we're going to kind of talk about how to avoid that and keep yourself in a different zone, in a different mindset. Right. And so there's another quote here that I liked. So the human condition tells us that emotions are an inevitable part of life and practicing when and how to process them is what gives you control. So take control today and stop letting other people have control of you. And stay tuned for this highlight from the upcoming Service Drive Revolution.
Next week on Service Drive Revolution. Today we're going to talk about the second half of my marketing books, my eccentric book list here. There are two wolves that live inside us. You have two wolves inside of you. I would say very much. Both are parts managers. One is actually working F and I right now because he eats little boys or whatever. Somebody is out of their mind. Yeah. Oh, hit the camera. Nice work. This book sells for $1,000. I don't understand. You want to know the truth, though? Understanding marketing and understanding advertising is understanding how the human mind works. Crazy, right? Yeah.
