Service Department Culture vs Chaos | SDR #297

This is a conversational YouTube episode (SDR #297) where Chris Collins and Christian Lafferty mix informal banter with practical commentary. They discuss personal topics (jet skiing, early-morning lake serenity), logistics around Chris’s new leadership book (warehouse storage, book-processing team, app-based training), light workplace anecdotes (pallet jack/forklift stories), an automotive-safety news item about trucks’ brakes catching fire on steep grades (citing a July 23, 2024 Automotive News item and noting 117°F and a 9% grade), and a political discussion about which presidential candidate (Trump or Harris) might be better for the auto industry and for California’s business climate. The tone alternates between playful, promotional, technical, and strongly opinionated political commentary.

Welcome to the big show. Today we're talking about the subject that most people don't understand and get wrong, but we, in a very ranty way, are going to set. Set it straight. We're gonna set the record straight today on culture, what it is, how it works, and why you've misunderstood it for a very, very long time. Then there's a bunch of fun stuff in the news and much, much more coming up on this edition of Service Driver Revolution.
I have not jet skied enough this summer. Last summer was a blast. This summer. How many times have I been jet skiing?
Twice that I know of.
Once.
Just that one time.
Will you count going and putting them in as jet skiing?
I would assume you took a few laps. Yes.
No, I was just getting them started. Like, that wasn't.
Oh, that's a shame.
I've c. I've had to cancel two times. Well, three now. Three times. We do have a lot because of the. Yeah. All because of the leadership book. The leadership book is crazy. We had to rent a warehouse.
Yeah. Which is cool.
My buddy bought five of them and picked them up today and he was like.
Couldn'T carry them because they're £12 a piece. Yeah.
That's £60 a book.
It's crazy.
Yeah. I've gotten a lot of text messages from people. My favorite, favorite feedback for you is I'm having a hard time putting it down. I don't know if there's a better compliment. Like, they just can't stop it. They want to read more.
It's great. Also, too, if you. If you haven't got the leadership book, you're missing out on some fun starting in the app. So we have an app dedicated to leadership where we're. We're going to start going live in there, but for now, we're just putting up training that goes along with the book. But we're going to do 17 laws of leadership in there live. The first two will be recorded and then we're going to go live and there's a lot of fun starting to happen in there.
Yeah. I think that my favorite part about that app is there's a lot of hidden nooks and crannies and caverns. Like, it's going to be. There's going to be a lot of fun to be had in there.
I think it's cool how, like, open people are. Like, I don't know, they're sharing. It's very nice, very friendly.
How many people have, like, books that. That hit them significantly has been really cool to see yeah.
That's what. Eventually that apple will evolve into a book club. Then the people that come to the Leadership Squared experience are going to have their own channel in there and that's tied into it, which there's a reason why. But that'll be really fun.
Yeah, it's. It's cool. After Lord knows how many years we've been making all happen that it's coming together.
It feels. It feels like non stop.
Yeah. There's not enough time in the day.
Yeah. Didn't. You didn't even get a weekend. Right. You left Sunday.
I did. At 8 in the morning.
Yeah. So you haven't even had. You're just going, going through.
It's that time, man. This is where the, where we work harder.
The book is fun though. It's fun to see people's reaction.
Yeah, it. Yeah.
But I want to jet ski.
Are you going next month?
I want to go twice.
Okay, good.
But they. That got messed up too.
It's already messed up.
Yeah.
All right. We got to do something about that. There's. There's a level, for those of you have never witnessed, Chris, on a jet ski. There is a level of like childhood happiness that happens when you're right.
Because it's fine up there. There's no phones. There's eagles.
Multiple eagles. Other.
Other idiots like us.
Way idiot. More idiotic.
Well, those kids that have those jet skis that do the jumps.
Yeah. The flippies. Yeah. It's cool to watch, but not my thing. But yeah, that's. That's a really serene thing. 6:30 in the morning is the best time to be on that lake by far.
How many people do we have processing books?
10. I don't know. It's like a whole squadron of book processors.
Yeah. We had to buy, by the way. We had to buy. What do you call those things that move crates?
We at CCI own a pallet jack.
Yeah.
It's funny because it's all stuff like when I was in my younger life, I think you know about my forklift driving, but like I got fired. Yeah. But I also was really, really decent with a pallet jack.
Let's not just run by the fact that you got fired as a forklift driver. Why did you get fired as a forklift driver?
Because I. My, my allowance of damage went a little higher than it was supposed to. By.
How long did it take to get to your allowance of damage?
Oh, I worked there for a couple years.
Oh, it took a couple years.
Yeah.
See that, that's even funny in and of itself because somebody that can't drive should wreck right away.
Yeah, it took me a little while. I was probably. I was probably more cautious. I think the problem was, is like, there's something to being 19 years old and being on a night shift and having all. A whole warehouse to yourself. So not being a good driver. Young, probably a little. Not as mature as I should be. And I love going fast.
You feel like you're mature now?
I would. I would probably wreck less stuff. I wouldn't claim perfection on the forklift, but. But I can operate that thing.
That's good. Okay. What's in the kn.
Okay, so we've got a lot of stuff to talk about today. So one first is. I read this in the Bible. It's a sign of the apocalypse. Trucks descending into Death Valley are catching fire, officials say.
So you. You came over that hill going into Death Valley right when you were coming back on fourth of July?
Yes, and it was super hot. So when we went through, it was 117.
So what's happening is the brakes are catching on fire, right?
Yeah. So the article actually says it's the funniest thing is that it's not the ambient temperature that has as big a thing. It's way more so coming out down that hill. It's a 9% grade. So they said that when a truck catches fire, it's almost always driver error.
Because they're riding the brakes instead of shifting down.
Exactly Right. So then the other thing. And it's so funny, Coach Hoagie and I were just talking about this yesterday and where, like, it's really interesting to me that, like, the best we've come up with for, like a truck when it starts to have the brakes go out and everything like that, is to build, like, this little runoff filled with gravel.
Oh, those are always funny.
It's the most technological thing that they've got for.
But you know what's great about that is when you look at that little runoff with gravel, it's been used.
Yeah, it's like quicksand. You can see how deep the ruts are in that thing.
So, I mean, it's not like it's sitting there unused. People are using it because you can see the. The tire. The tire marks in there, whatever the tread.
What do you think of me going to get my cdl just to try to see what it's like now?
We're too busy.
So I thought that that was funny, clowning around. Yeah.
But.
But yeah, trucks are burning to the ground.
They are literally burning to the Ground. Yeah. So at the bottom of the hill, there were a bunch of those. Those incidences. That's not a new road either.
I remember when I was a kid and we would drive from Mexico up to Washington and then from Washington back to Mexico in the summer. So when I was out of school, we would go up there and I. We didn't have AC in our car.
Oh, that felt terrible.
I think we called that car. Car the. The Leper or something. That's some name like that. It was a Volkswagen wagon. Like, not the Bug, but the wagon.
Yeah.
And it.
The.
Like the floorboard was plywood and no ac. And I remember as a kid just thinking, like, when is this gonna be over? Like, you're just sweating for hours, drinking gallons of water, and have to go to the bathroom constantly.
Yeah, it. It's a little. I, I definitely felt the, the break thing in the rv. Like, not quite to the. I think that's the thing is that the trucks, like, they're just getting so heavy and there's so much cargo. And like, are you seeing those ones on the roads that have, like, three containers with them? Like, of course the brakes are going to be under a lot of stress going through that stuff because they're so heavy, but it doesn't feel good when those brakes start to kind of. You can feel that brake fade thing. All right, next up, ready for this? Let's get political. Okay. Who's going to be better for the automotive industry, Trump or Harris?
Where's. Where's this news from?
This is from the Automotive news. Pretty fresh. July 23, 2024.
So they've kind of got like a pro con list here. And then obviously make your decisions as. As such.
But Harris is looked at as pro union.
She wants to keep the tariff on China to keep the Chinese electric vehicle cheap cars out, and she's super pro renewable energy. On the other side of the aisle, we have Trump, who is referred to as anti union. He wants to keep tariffs high and really support American production. So all imports he wants tariffs on. But he definitely isn't letting China in either. And this is my favorite one, he vows to undo anything related to the climate change theory. So he doesn't.
Didn't he talk about in his speech the other day about the automotive industry?
I think he did, but I don't remember what the specifics were.
I think he just said right out like that it was, you know, a great part of America. And I don't know, I think some of those things are a little deceiving. Because the, you know, a lot of people in the unions are voting for Trump because Trump really is for bringing manufacturing back, saying that, you know, previously, Biden and then Harris are pro union. They're pro union leaders, but the union leaders have a big disconnect from the actual people in the union.
Oh, maybe Trump's more union. Pro union worker. Yeah. Versus Harris being.
And so I think that that's very deceiving because, you know, the. The head of the union wants to control everything, and they will donate to these political parties, but the actual people doing the work that are the members are having a different experience.
I mean, it's not like a lot of. Of government.
Right?
Is that. I think I've heard you say it a bunch of times, that there's no one in government that represents you. So maybe that's how it is.
If you want to see. If you want to see.
Kamala and her gang of misfits like Pelosi and Gavin Newsom and that whole California Mafia. I mean, I think it's so funny that they say that Trump is like the next Hitler or whatever. That's. They're closer, way closer to that than Trump is. You can come to California and check it out. We'll show you around. It. It isn't so great. We're planning our escape.
Yeah.
Like, we're very much, like, I heard Elon Musk talk about it, and it's just like, it's not one thing. It's a bunch of things, but they're. So many people have left California just like in the, in the Biden administration. It's like their answer to everything is just raise taxes on the people that are creating the opportunities. It's hard to create opportunities and grow a business when you don't have anything left over to grow or reinvest. And so.
For us, we got to get out of here. Like, there's no. Yeah, our roots are pretty deep, but there's. There's no other option. They've mismanaged this thing. And I think that she would just be a worse version of what Biden has done in the sense that it's just more control, more bureaucracy, less of a balanced budget, shrinking economy.
Way more red tape and bureaucracy to do anything. And higher taxes. That's. That's our reality.
I don't understand how taxes can get much higher here. It's absolutely insane to me, just looking at everything.
My, My buddy Mike pointed it out to me a couple years ago. He goes, bro, once we're paying 51%, we're not. It's not ours anymore. Like, you're working for them.
That's right.
And that. That's just not okay. Like.
Yeah, that. That really bugs me. It was funny that. That when they were talking about the thing, the post Biden thing was like, so number one was Harris, number two was Gavin, and number three was Pritzker. The Illinois governor were like, the replacements. And there's only, like, one state in the country that I think rivals California and stupidity, and that is the great state of Illinois. Like, they do some really just terrible stuff in Illinois.
Obama came out of there.
Yeah. And I think that there's a lot of great people in Illinois that are just. They get their butt kicked by terrible, terrible politics.
Have you always voted one way?
For the most part, but I have voted on the other side, too.
I've never voted. I've always voted for the person and the time and the. The policies.
Yeah.
But I. There's no way that this version of the Democratic Party represents anything I would want to be interested in. Yeah, they are.
They are driving us into a more of a forced socialist situation. Like, the chaos, the crime. It's nuts.
I really think before people vote, they should spend a week here in Los Angeles.
Oh, yeah. Just check. Like. I don't understand. That was the thing when people were saying, Gavin Newsom's gonna run. I don't understand how people here vote for him. It's such chaos. The crime, it's so mismanaged. He's got. We pay all this in taxes. He.
He's.
We. We had the fifth largest economy, but now I think it's, what, the seventh largest economy in the world. And he. He can't even balance that. Like the amount of taxes here and the waste and the corruption and the. The. The whole idea that they want everybody focused on things that don't matter, like social issues. But, I mean, you know, we want to talk about kids in school and their genders and all this.
