The speaker recalls first music memories centered on R&B — citing Philly International-era acts, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Gerald Butler, Patti LaBelle, and Earth, Wind & Fire — and describes how records and R&B brought the family together (Saturday cleaning, dancing, using broomsticks as microphones). The passage emphasizes music's role in creating shared family moments and movement.

So what was your first memory of music? It was what my parents listened to. Which was what? Philly International, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, gerald Butler, Patti LaBelle. Just R& B. R and B. Music was music. Something that brought everybody together in the family. Like on Saturdays when we'd have to clean the house, she would put on a record player. Earth, Wind and Fire would blare through the house. And my sister and my brothers, we would, you know, act like the broomstick was a mic. You know, that typical. That really happened. That wasn't just like in the movie. Like those things actually happen, where you just kind of sat and you guys do some dance moves and we're singing and we're dancing and all that. Yeah, So I think that's the characteristic of music. Like it's actual duty to bring people together and to create moves.
