Tips for Becoming a Dealership's Next Service Director

Chris Collins explains how an assistant service manager can move up to service director. Raise your hand and tell the general manager you want it, get mentorship from the current director, and learn the department's financials. Promote-from-within is what dealerships prefer.

Let's go to today's. Are you ready, Christian?
I'm ready.
I was born ready.
Are you sure?
Hell, yeah.
You don't look ready.
No. Let's do this thing.
This is an important question to this guy.
I'm so dialed in.
How do I prepare myself to become the new service director? I feel like my service director right now is getting ready to leave. And what can I do to show my general manager that it's me, the one that they should choose. Right. Like right now, I'm the assistant service manager, like the service lane director. But I want his position when he leaves. I don't want them thinking of anybody else but me. What. What, what can you tell me? Maybe some steps that I can do without, you know, brown nosing it that my GM is going to notice me.
Okay. What do you. What do you think? I got a pretty easy answer.
Okay. The. How do we let it be known is really simple. Just let it be known.
Y. Like the one. The one thing that you kind of overlook in the position that you're in is the person making that decision is looking for somebody to raise their hand.
Correct.
And so when you raise your hand and I would. I would live by the narrative. I already know the culture here. I, you know, I want to learn. I want to be a part of this. I value this place. You have an advantage if you raise your hand over anybody else coming in from the outside. So walk right through the front door and tell the general manager, whoever, hey, I want to. I want that position. And if it ever comes available. And I want to be mentored by you.
Yep. If you ask nine out of 10 general managers, promoting from within is the preferred method of finding the next person.
And could be because they're lazy, but hey, it works.
Yeah, it's exactly fine. So I think that. That and then really looking for. And understanding to the business part of it is I think you can do this with accounting or with the general manager. It's probably more effective with the general manager. But I would seriously try to do everything I could to learn the financials.
Yeah. And even with the manager that's there now, like, I would tell him, like, I want your job someday. Help me.
It's funny how I've seen that happen a bunch of times, and that person really takes ownership and trying to get you to the next level.
Yeah.
They will endorse you on the way out the door.
Yep. You'd be crazy if he didn't pick this person. Yeah, that's a good.
Gotta be humble. You gotta want to learn. You gotta pay attention, take notes, take it seriously. But.
Not enough people raise their hand. That's what I would say.
They just assume that they're going to get asked.
Totally. So thank you for the question.
Like if you're dating online, you just wait to get swiped. They'll never find anybody.
A little abstract.
Same thing to me.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Dating is not that I've done a.
Lot of Tinder is the same thing as being a service manager.
Bumble Ender.
Oh, yeah. You're into Bumble? That's the one.
What's bumble again?
I thought that was the one you used.
No.
